Non Credit Course 3- (CH-05)

This course is designed specifically for students of 3 rd yr keeping in mind that they could understand some topics which are important for their overall development, their mind set and in order to become competitive. This syllabus would help them in -Understanding the critical nature of Mass transfer operations, Designing of several unit operations, Designing different units virtually and several optimization techniques. UNIT-1 Molecular and eddy diffusion, Mass transfer flux and rate, Stagnant film, Wetted- Wall columns, Mass transfer analogues , Industrial crystallizers, Design of plate columns. UNIT-2 Heat exchange equipments, overall heat transfer coefficient, Process design and sizing of chemical engineering equipment such as compressors, heat exchangers, multistage contactors. UNIT-3 Introduction to process variables; Static and dynamic characteristics of instruments and their general classification, Principles, constructions and operations of instruments for the measurement, principle and construction of pneumatic and electronic controller, Introduction to data acquisition system and intelligent instruments, process instrumentation diagrams and symbols, Instrumentation of process equipments such as distillation column, heat exchanger. UNIT-4 Introduction to Chemical engineering softwares: Aspen, Hysys, Gambit, Fluent, JMP Pro 10 and Design expert for several optimization techniques.

COURSE OUTCOMES:After the completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Calculate the mass transfer rate within a chemical process. 2. Understand the significance of mass transfer coefficient. 3. Perform the sizing of various mass transfer equipments such as distillation column, absorber etc. 4. Classify different types of heat exchangers. 5. Design a heat exchanger, compressor and multistage contactor. 6. Understand the various symbols used in process and instrumentation diagrams. 7. Understand the working of Chemical engineering softwares.
