The two classes will be combined and then split into three smaller and separate groups. This will allow students to gain the maximum instruction needed to gain knowledge throughout all lessons. List any other special features of your school or classroom that will affect the teaching of this lesson. This lesson will take place in the Multi-Purpose room. While this lesson is taking place, Mr. Vieoux will be teaching a fitness activity in the Fitness Room and Mrs. Englerth will be teaching about heart rate in the Gym.

They will physically feel the effects yoga has on their body and mind. The students will learn a new way they can use to handle stressful situations in their life. Content Specific Terms: Process Terms: Mountain Pose, Upward Salute, Standing Forward Bend, Standing Half Stress, Relaxation, Heels to the Mat, Stretch, Muscles Forward Bend, Downward Dog, High Lunge, Low Lunge, Cat Pose, Cobra Pose, Cow Pose Prior Learning/Prior Thinking Prior to this lesson, students have learned about the 5 components of physical education, which includes flexibility. They have learned about different exercises that target the different components. They know the definition of flexibility and exercises that correspond. Now they will be physically performing an exercise that fits the flexibility fitness component.

ASSESSMENT BEFORE THE LESSON Pre-assessment Students will be assessed on their previous work and knowledge learned related to the five fitness components. Their completed worksheet will show their understanding in the definition of all 5 fitness components, as well as examples of exercises that correspond to each. LESSON PLAN OBJECTIVES AND LIFE SKILLS
Skill Development 1. Basic Skill Instruction The students will use the yoga chart to learn the basic yoga poses. They will be guided by cues through the instructor and have the pictures visually in front of them to help aid yoga knowledge. 2. Application of Skills The students will then apply their learned knowledge of the basic yoga poses by performing the yoga chart a second time. Less cues will be used by the instructor, which will allow students to relax their mind and body more thoroughly. 3. Fitness Benefits Skill Related Fitness Life Skills 5. Effort The students will put forth their best effort to participate in the yoga activity the entire time. 6. Goal Setting 7. Communication The students will communicate within the group discussion, sharing their thoughts on stress within their lives and different ways of how they rid their stress.

4. Health Related Fitness The students will be able to understand the relationship between the flexibility fitness component and yoga. Students will demonstrate their understanding by participating in the yoga poses.

Introduction Total time: 10 Minutes Upon entering the multi-purpose room, students will participate in a warm-up activity called Cats and Mouse. Students will be introduced to the activity. At first, there will only be one cat and one mouse As the students begin to understand the activity, we will add another cat and another mouse

Formations / Cues Shoulder to shoulder next to one person Cat chases the Mouse If the Mouse stops at your group, the person on the opposite end becomes the new mouse, which is who the cat is then chasing. If the Cat tags the Mouse, roles are reversed

Assessment Students will be assessed on participation throughout the warm-up. Are they participating the entire time? If students are participating the entire time, it should also show that they have good knowledge of the rules of the game.

Planned Transitions: (If first class) (Second class will put mats away) Students will be able to grab a drink if they need one. Once students have returned to the gym, they Students need to retrieve their writing utensil and meet back need to find a partner. Each group then needs in the center of the gym. to grab a blue mat.

Students will participate in a yoga activity, guided by the yoga chart After completion of the first yoga chart, students will take Part in a discussion on stress and relieving stress. Students will be in a circle formation 2 students per 1 blue mat Rule #1 Absolutely No Talking Shoes may be taken off

Students will be assessed through observation: Are they participating the entire time? Are they following the number 1 rule? (no talking) Are they putting forth effort in participating the entire time?

Formations / Assessment Strategy


Students will be assessed on the completion of the yoga exit ticket: 1. What was your favorite yoga pose performed today? Why? 2. Would you participate in a yoga activity again? Why or Why Not?

Assessment at the end of the lesson Assessment will take place in a variety of ways throughout this entire lesson: 1. Students will be assessed on observation and participation during the warm up Cat and Mouse activity 2. Students will be assessed on observation and participating during the yoga activity, as well as the stress group discussion 3. Students will be assessed upon the completion of their exit ticket regarding their feelings on yoga Equipment needs Writing Utensil, Yoga Charts, Yoga Exit Ticket, Relaxation Music, Mats. Safety Considerations
1. Cat and Mouse Be careful not to run into groups of 2 standing still 2. Cat and Mouse If 2 cats and mice are being used, be aware of wear the others are. 3. Yoga Do not stress or push your muscles past an uncomfortable stretch.

Differentiated Instruction Students will be guided throughout the yoga activity in a variety of ways They will be able to visually see the instructor performing the yoga poses, they will be guided by various cues used for each yoga pose, and they will have the yoga chart right in front of them, allowing them to see what is happening next.

Classroom Management/Democratic Practices Only 2 students will be allowed on one yoga mat throughout the yoga activity. This will insure that all students have plenty of space and are able to perform each pose comfortably, as well as provide them with minimum distractions while participating in the entire yoga activity.
