Title: College? What Now? Organization: Channels to Future Success Members: David San Felipe Dominique Fukagawa- Matano Jenny Thao Tristan Saechao Contact: website: http://thechannelstofuturesuccess.weebly.com Email: phe.csus@gmail.com Mission Statement: Channels to Future Success is an organization that influences the local students and youth of the respected community to learn more about the available opportunities in higher education. We openly share our own knowledge and personal experiences in higher education to plant a seed to the future generation. Our research topic is one that covers a lot of interests. We, as a coalition, chose certain topics to focus our attention on and split those between the four of us. These areas will help our coalition narrow down our concept for the project. We chose to focus on transitional programs, equal opportunities, family involvement, academic persistence, college prep, ethnicities, and urban education. Theory of Change: Our contemporary issue deals with providing pipelines to higher education. Many people all over the world hesitate to grasp a chance to attend college or any type of higher education. Our focus is on urban high school students because urban students have been found to be less likely to attend an institute of higher education. We want to provide a direct pipeline to these students to increase the percentage of college students who come straight from high school. If this problem is not federally addressed and improved, the percentage of urban high school graduates who attends higher education will steadily decrease as we will see higher poverty rates and higher concentration of low-income families within urban communities. We need to address this problem by informing urban high school students about the benefits and strengths of attending a postsecondary institution and how it can ultimately give you an upper hand in life. We also need to break down the different stages and processes of applying to postsecondary institutions and make it easier and convenient for everyone. Channels to Future Success is an organization that helps high school students pipeline to higher education. We share our own knowledge and experiences regarding our transition to high school to college. In similar way, College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) of Sacramento State facilitates transitions of migrant and seasonal farmworkers students background. They provide

support especially for first year students to develop skills necessary to graduate. Our group, Channels to Future Success, provides transitions by doing workshop presentation and panels in the urban communities within Sacramento area. Furthermore, 65th Street Corridor Community Collaborative Project aims to develop educational and social programs for disadvantaged children by continuing, strengthening, and expanding intervention programs at Will C. Wood Middle School and Hiram Johnson High School. However, our group try to provide our own hands to students who have not gotten the same help as the others especially for upcoming freshman students. Community Partners: One of our coalitions partners is the organization on campus called CAMP. CAMP is a unique educational program that helps students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds succeed at Sacramento State. CAMP facilitates transition from high school to college and offers first-year support services to develop the skills necessary to graduate from college. CAMP strives to be a "home away from home" for its students. Another partnership is the Sac State Admissions and Outreach office on campus. The Office of Admissions & Outreach facilitates access to higher education for potential students through outreach education, individual admission advising, and accurate, efficient document processing. These activities support the University in achieving optimal enrollment representation including ethnicity, gender, age and regional diversity. We are working with staff members who are also a part of the organization called Future Hornets. Our last partnership is with the Administration at Hiram Johnson High School. Their goal is to provide innovative systems that support high academic achievement for all students through the following Small Learning Communities/California Partnership Academies. We have contacted a few of the teachers who are also involved with the 65th Street Corridor Project. Their support for our project and goals has been greatly appreciated. Project Synopsis: Our coalitions project is to hold a few presentations in the local high schools. We are working closely with a few faculty members and administrators at Hiram Johnson. Given our type of project and our mission statement, we are hoping to create a service project that will be able to increase the awareness of the opportunities about Higher Education. We firmly believe that there are many opportunities for every student to be able to go into Higher Education if they so choose to. We hope to encourage both the student and the families to explore all of the pathways to Higher Education. We, as a collaborative effort, hope to incorporate our own experiences into the information we will be presenting. In our coalition, Channels to Future Success, we are promoting higher education specifically towards seniors in high school. Why we chose to work with seniors because they are the ones

who are going off to college and we thought that it would be helpful for them to know more about college from college students and not counselors. With this in mind we hope to inspire these seniors in choosing to attend a college after high school with our influence as college students. We also want to inform their parents as well because parents are a key part in education. Our group decided to be partner with Hiram Johnson due to the distance from Sacramento State and because some groups members knew the teachers there. To achieve our goals we are going to Hiram Johnson, located about 15 minutes away from Sacramento State. Here at the high school, our anticipation is to present to a classroom about college: GE requirements, majors, test scores (SAT/ACT), clubs, etc. In order for this to all happen we have met with CAMP, Chao Vang, and Administration Outreach and have partnered with these organizations. For our poster, we have been working at the Student Technology Center in the Academic Information Resource Center (AIRC). Our coalition has planned to present in April. As stated previously, we plan our presentations to be at Hiram Johnson High School in the local Sacramento area. We hope that the administration will allow us to present in two different classrooms for multiple classes. We will be using a combination of Power point presentation, handouts, a select panel of students, advisors, and a few activities. We hope that this will all come together pretty quickly and efficiently. We have contacted a partnership program to assist us with our organization, we have contacted and planned a meeting with faculty at the high school, and we have made arrangements for our poster presentation. Budget Proposal: Our Coalitions proposed budget is for materials, gas money, and food for the presentation. Gas Expenditures: $50-$60 o Trips to and from High School for meeting with Administration members. o Trips to and from the High School for the Presentations. o Trips to and from crafts store for materials needed.
