PUNJAB UNIVERSITY LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER ISSN: 2O79-4037

FROM THE EDITORS DESK

All the praise be to the Lord of worlds, the Almighty, the Creator of all creatures, Who created man from clot and taught him with pen. It is really a matter of pleasure for us that the previous issue won an immense appreciation from the community. Our readers liked all the segments, specially interview with Madam Tanveer Jahan Khan received an overwhelming response. We got many messages/emails elaborating this appreciation. Editorial team is thankful to all those, who responded through their apprecaition, suggestions, criticims, opinions and sincere evaluations. Feedback from readers either positive or negative is the soul of our work and it always encourages us to meet the expectations of our valuable readers. On the eve of November 09, 2012, a mega event of PULISAA was held in the beautiful lawns of University of the Punjab, Lahore. It was named as An Evening with Amjad Islam Amjad. The purpose was to provide professionals an opportunity to sit together, to cherish the occasion and enjoy the party. Although a large number of professionals attended the event, yet there is a lot to do to attract LIS colleagues for such memorable gatherings. . Here we would like to draw our readers attention towards an important thing. Most of us raise question what professional associations are giving the profession? But we think more important thing is that how much sincere we are towards these associations. Unfortunately we give less and expect much. We forget that these associations are because of us, we are not because of them. If we dont care of them they will become useless and be perished due to our negligence and negative approach. A report is also included on National Conference by PLA Federal Branch held at Islamabad. Many of the PLISAA members participated in that conference and presented their research papers and showed best capabilities as a researchers. Department of Library & Information Science, Punjab University conducted a workshop. A report about that workshop is also part of these pages. Besides this, we took a special interview of Malik Muhammad Siddique, a senior alumnus. He rendered his services for the profession on different levels. We hope that you will like to know about his conversation with Info@PULISAA. Take good care of yourselves and your families. May the Lord of all Worlds keep you and your families in His shelter. Dont forget to express your views about this issue.

An Interview with Malik Muhammad Siddique

Interviewer: Ghulam Yasin Malik & Amna Farzand Ali
Malik Muhammad Siddique is an senior alumnus of Department of Library & Information Science, University of the Punjab,(DLIS, PU) Lahore. After getting Diploma in Library Science in 1969, he rendered his services for the betterment of profession on different levels. At present, he is working as a researcher at Nazria Pakistan Foundation. Info@PULISAA feels gratitude for him on sparing his time for this interview.

Info@PULISAA: Would you please like to tell about your early life? Malik Siddique: First of all, I would like to thank the Punjab University Library and Information Science Alumni Association (PULISAA) newsletter team for starting series of interviews about the life stories of pioneers of the PULISAA newsletter. These interviews being conducted by young professionals will through light on the life and efforts of their senior professionals who had worked hard for the betterment of profession of library and information science. Coming to your question, I was born on 5 November, 1943, in district Shiekupura where I completed my matriculation from Farooqabad School. After that, I passed intermediate and graduation examinations from Govt. College Shiekupura. Info@PULISAA: Did you come to this field by choice or incident? Malik Siddique: This was totally incidental because when I came to Lahore in 1967 after completion of my graduation, I wanted to become lawyer and applied for LLB in Law College. Later, a friend, who met on the way, suggested me to apply for admission in library science also. Info@PULISAA: How and when did you join library science? Malik Siddique: In 1968, I got admission in library science diploma course for one year. I stood first in diploma examination and after 20 days of my diploma result, I got my first job. I joined as Assistant Librarian (BPS-11) on 20 October, 1969 in the Punjab University Library. Info@PULISAA: Would you brief on Governments criterion of promotion for MLIS diploma holders? Malik Siddique: The designation for the diploma holders in library science was assistant librarian but in Punjab Government, those; who joined college or university, got the designation of librarian. In 1969, according to Punjab Governments official notification, the librarian was able to get BPS-17, while Assistant Librarian BPS-16. Info@PULISAA: Have you worked for any organization? Malik Siddique: From1969 to 1974 we worked hard for status and designation of librarian. To achieve this purpose, we established Punjab University Librarians Association (PULA). On the platform of PULA, we demanded our rights. Mr.Mushtaq, Basheer Ali Malik who were our senior teachers also got promotions in grade 16 and 17 the same year. Info@PULISAA: Did you go to Karachi University for MLS and, if not, what was the reason? Malik Siddique: I wrote an application to my authorities for getting MLS admission in Karachi but they refused. The authority asked me to resign if I wanted to go to Karachi University for MLS. At that time, I couldnt go to Karachi University for MLS due to financial constraints. Info@PULISAA: When did you pass your MLS? Malik Siddique I passed MLS in 1976 from the University of Punjab with distinctive marks. Info@PULISAA: Have you introduced any distinctive service/facility for MLS professionals? Malik Siddique: For MLS degree holders, we introduced a new structure for the librarian in the Punjab University Library. The hierarchy of Chief Librarian, Deputy Chief Librarian, Senior Librarian and Assistant Librarian was established. Info@PULISAA: When did you join Library Science Department of Punjab University? Malik Siddique: I joined Punjab University Library Science Department as a part time faculty member in 1977 till1982. Then I joined this department as a lecturer in 1988 to1993. I served it for almost 10 years. Info@PULISAA: Would you recall about other colleagues in the faculty? Malik Siddique: When I joined, Mushtaq Ahamed was head of the department, Afzal Haq Qurshi and Madam Umera Shah were

Page 6

INFO@PULISAA

were lecturers in the department. Later, Imran Ghani joined us as lecturer. Info@PULISAA: Will you tell about any class student of international recognition? Malik Siddique: I taught many renowned students but I feel proud of Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood and Dr. Rafique Awan, who did their PhDs later. It is interesting that I learnt computer from my student Prof. Dr. Khalid. Info@PULISAA: Why could you not do M Phil or PhD? Malik Siddique: There was no M Phil or PhD facility for Library Science in the Punjab University at that time. Only two degrees were being offered by the department diploma and MLS. The Ph. Ds from abroad did not prefer to serve here but went to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia. When Prof. Dr. Khalid became head of the department, he introduced M. Phil and Ph. D degrees in 2005. Info@PULISAA: Why did you say good bye to the department? Malik Siddique: In 2003, I got retired from the University of Punjab after completing 60 years of service. Info@PULISAA: What about your contribution in PULSAA newsletter? Malik Siddique: I contributed two articles in PULISAA newsletter on Inductive Methods of Research and Library Science Literature in Pakistan. Info@PULISAA: What kind of role the department can play in present market situation of LIS? Malik Siddique: Todays library market of LIS has gone beyond the traditional LIS. The responsibility of library schools has also been increased in compiling curriculum and counseling of students. I feel that students from library schools lack confidence when they come to the market which do not let them flourish. They have to suffer in the field due to lack of communicative skills. The library schools should play effective role to build confidence and communicative skills during the academic studies according to the market requirements. Info@PULISAA: How can the image of our profession can be improved? Malik Siddique: Commitment and hard work are key to raise status of our professionals and profession. Info@PULISAA: Any other memory of professional life? Malik Siddique: Every moment of life is memorable because it becomes our past, but the welcome and farewell functions and tours especially of Murree, Narran Kagan are unforgettable. Info@PULISAA: What about your family? Malik Siddique: I have a happy family of a wife and four children including three sons and a daughter hold MSc degrees and enjoying family life. Info@PULISAA: Life after retirement? Malik Siddique: Life after retirement is Alhamdulillah going also good. After retirement, I joined Shirkat Gha and now I am working as a researcher for Nazria Pakistan Foundation. I wrote two other books with the collaboration of Nazira Pakistan Foundation including Contribution of Muslim Scientist and The Creation of Real Estate in South Asia. Info@PULISAA: What difference do you feel between jobs in public and private sectors? Malik Siddique: The difference between public and private sectors is point of encouragement. The public sector usually does not encourage its staff, while private sector encourages its employees and utilize their skills in a better way.I want to share the same case happen to me when I was the student of MLIS I want to take thesis as a course that time Dr. Mumtaz Ali Anwar was the head of the department he took my interview for the thesis permission the first question in the interview was can you do it that time I seems like to be Pendu(villager Guy) maybe thats why he thought that how can he do it but I said, Yes sir, I can do it . And I obtained 180 marks out of 200 in my thesis. Info@PULISAA: Any advice or message for new professionals and PULISAA team? Malik Siddique: My advice for the young professionals is that they should work hard and be confident to have the capacity to do everything. If they are committed, they can chase every task, For the students I want to suggest, dear try to learn read or learn from the original text or produce them in your own writing not merely rely on others notes, The PULISAA is doing good work. May Allah give success to all of you at every step of life.
