Course Description: The study and application of medical sonography related to neurosonography. Topics to include examination techniques, recognition of pathology, differential diagnosis, pertinent lab values, anatomy, and clinical signs and symptoms.

Course Assessment: DMS 453 contributes to the development of the sonographer by incorporating the following elements into the course: Knowledge (Cognitive Domain): Neonatal brain and pediatric spine anatomy, pathology and sonographic applications Clinical Proficiency (Psychomotor Domain): Sonographic protocols of the prenatal brain, neonatal brain and pediatric spine Application of prenatal brain anatomy through simulation Application of neonatal brain protocols through building of anatomical models Behavioral Skills (Affective Domain): critical thinking, communication, professionalism, and time management

Course Outcomes: Through classroom (on-line) activities, written examinations, assignments the student will: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Differentiate the sonographic features of brain development Describe the anatomy and sonographic features of the neurosonography and the pediatric spinal cord Explain the physiology of the brain and pediatric spine as it applies to diagnostic medical sonography. Evaluate the sonographic features associated with anomalies, pathologies, and differential diagnosis in neurosonography and pediatric spinal cord sonography. Interpet lab values associated with neurosonography and pediatric spinal cord sonography. Assess pertinent clinical patient history, lab values, other diagnostic examinations and sonographic findings as the information applies neurosonography and the pediatric spinal cord. Identify proper patient care including the use of personal protection equipment. Identify proper patient education regarding neurosonography and pediatric spinal cord sonography.

Assignments and Participation Attendance and punctuality for all planned experiences in the classroom and on-line classes are expected and are referenced in the DMS Student Handbook. All assignments are to be completed PRIOR to the due date. Classroom participation for all planned experiences in the on-line classroom is required. It is the responsibility of the student to read weekly materials and complete assignments as required. Note: Each student must be in class on time. If you are not in the classroom when the faculty begins class, you must wait until the next break to enter the classroom. There will be no interruptions by students entering after class has commenced.

Electronic Devices All electronic devices (cell phones, pagers, iPods, etc.) must be set to silent or off during scheduled class times. Usage of electronic devices for nonacademic reasons (including text messaging) is prohibited during scheduled class times. This includes all classroom activities and following tests. Make-up Tests and Late Work Make-up Tests o Students will receive a grade of 0 for missed exams. o If the student has contacted the instructor in advance of the scheduled test time a make-up exam will be given and a 10-point deduction will be taken from the final test grade. o All make-up exams must be scheduled and taken within 1 week of absence. o Instructor has the right to grant exceptions in emergency situations. Late Work o All assignments are to be completed PRIOR to due date identified on Moodle o If a student is not able to complete the assignment prior to the due date the student must contact the instructor prior to the due date with specific questions or further clarification. o Late assignments may be awarded a maximum of 50% of the point value of the original assignment. o All late and make-up assignments must be completed within one week of the original due date to receive 50%.All late work received after one week of the original due date will receive a grade of

Method for Student Appeal Refer to the DMS Student Handbook and BCHS Student Handbook: Appeals for Academic Grievance Refund Policy- Summer 2013 Refund Policy and Dates for Tuition and Fees This policy applies to dropping a course or withdrawing from school: A student who withdraws from a course on or before the published registration date for the term in which they are enrolled will receive 100% Tuition and Course Fee Refund with the below date: o For the Summer 2013 trimester, this date is May 2, 2013 A student who withdraws from a course after the published registration date for the term in which the student is enrolled through the change/add period specified for the course in which the student is enrolled will receive a 100% Tuition Only Refund with the below date: o Course begins 05/06/13 and ends 08/17/13, refund through May 13, 2013 No tuition or fee refund will be processed after the change/add period specified for each course. Course fees are non-refundable after the published registration date for the term. A schedule of specific refund dates for each term will be published on the College website, will be distributed to all students via email each trimester and via course syllabi. All fees not related to a course are non-refundable. Student Responsibility: Complete reading and assignments prior to scheduled class time Be active in course participation activities Ask questions on moodle and/or contact instructor for questions or clarification Make appointments with faculty for individual assistance Interact in pre- and post-conference meetings Practice time management when completing assignments and studying for examinations Utilize college services for assistance with stress, test taking or study skills, health concerns or other issues

Course Grade: DMS 453 is an on-line course that offers a combination of instructional formats. Instructional formats include Power Point lectures and weekly assignments. The course is divided into two main learning elements: On-line classroom lecture videos and weekly assignments. Students will be evaluated through written tests, on-line quizzes, and assignments. Grading Scaleo A= 93-100 B=85-92 C=77-84 F=76 and below o The Moodle grade book is for communication of grades only. The Moodle grade book is not the official grade book; the official grade book is maintained by the course instructor and contains the grades of record o The final course grade is derived from the examination average score and the assignment average score o Final course grade of less than 77 will result in failure of the course. Exams will be averaged together to make up 70% of the final course grade Students will be evaluated by completing 5 multiple choice tests Test 1-Sonography Principles, Care of the Neonate, and Embryology-May 27 Test 2-Anatomy , Physiology, and Sonographic Techniques-June 17 Test 3-Pathologies and Differential Diagnosis-July 15 Test 4-Pathologies, Differential Diagnosis, and Pediatric Spine-August 5 Test 5- Comprehensive Final Examination August 12 Each test is of equal value 5 exams will be averaged together to make up 70% of the students final course grade. Students must have an overall test average of 77 to successfully pass the course. . Students are required to take the examination at the college. Dates and test times are listed in the course syllabus.

Assignments will be averaged together to make up 30% of final course grade. All assignments are to be completed individually. Students working in groups to complete assignments will be in violation of standards of conduct as outline in the BCHS student handbook. Working as a group toward an assignment that is designated as an individual assignment is considered cheating. Assignment grades will be calculated using the following: On-line Quiz (4)- 40% o May 17th, June 7th, June 28th, and July 26th Webinar Assignments (3)-30% o Due: June 14th, July 12th, and August 2nd Image Analysis Assignments (3)-30% o Due: June 17th, July 15th, and August 5th
