lways fnish what you start, is what the saying goes.
I disagree. Home-making is the so-called work-
in-progress, isnt it? Always adding, removing or
updating things to create your latest little triumph.
Then theres the make-over project which requires a little
planning and certainly no small feat. The overly-ambitious mind
can conjure many ideas to convert a space from dull to wow.
Things do get interesting and creatively so when faced with
rigid parameters such as limited budget and space. To solve the
latter, in comes the art of space manipulation or space-faking.
The key to space-faking is best approached with precision,
bordering on obsessive, attention to detail, coupled with a
burning desire to use every conceivable nook and awkward
cranny for storage. No opportunity is overlooked.
For studio and soho unit dwellers, beds can be lifted up and
house
proud

mirrors subtly angled to accommodate sneaky shelving behind

or underneath them. Even the stairs can reveal storage beneath
their treads. Other areas liberated can be potentials for the
inclusion of en-suite dressing rooms, vanity sinks and designer
loos with no compromise on style or comfort. So, rule one: avail
yourself of every millimetre of potential storage space in order
to release room for more rooms!
In this issue, we are thrilled to present you with inspiring
homes to ft small spaces or to complement a growing artifact
collection. Each is immaculately conceived to fulfll dreams and
lifestyle choices.
Let your home be a testament to your creativity and an
extension to your personal style. Your quest for a beautiful
home starts here.

THE GIRAFFE Did you know that this 2m long necked, even toed angulated African mammal got its
name from its camel-like face and those spots, similar to the leopards? They can be hues of orange,
chestnut brown or almost black on light cream coat. They thrive well in the savannas, grasslands and
woodlands where acacia trees are plenty and the leaves are tasty to the girafes. To keep cool, those
tiny horns on their heads are highly vascular. More about girafes @ girafeconservation.org

xploiting their forte, design
frm Ide Etcetera, boldly
enters into a new phase in their
line of work, breaking new
grounds and opening up a whole new
way of living. Spearheading the team in
the increasingly popular and expanding
industry of Soho Living, is tCreative
Director of Ide Etcetera, Chris Cheng.
Increasingly so, home-owners look
to interior design as a creative means to
tailor make their abodes. Yet more than
just a pretty interior, they desire for a
creative source that is able to interpret
that which is uniquely them and translate
it into a space that is ideally theirs.
Understanding the basis of home-owners
needs and desires, Ide Etcetera is more
than a design frm. They are an innovative
think tank that combines mastery of
design with fnesse in execution to realize
the dreams and desires of their clients.
So what is the fundamental that
drive their creative success? Mood and
technique as Creative Director, Chris
Cheng will tell you, These two factors in

that is original and unparalleled in the
clients living and work space.
Attesting to this is one of their
many design projects, Lux Dream
Studio a Soho unit that is both home
and workplace to an international
photographer. Across the rooms, a
varied combination of elements such as
timbre fooring, industrial scafolding,
grey bricked wall and polished white
tiles were used. Applied in varying
depths, the spatiality of the Soho unit
exudes artistic professionalism beftting
of its home-owner and comfortable
relaxation of a home.
Intrinsic to the homes interior design
are the artful touches of personalization.
In reminiscence of the home-owners love
for the boating lifestyle, the home spots
pothole-inspired windows that stimulate
the yacht experience. Beautiful portraits
and furnishings of aesthetic drama such
as the London street lamp ceiling light
in the kitchen refect and embody the
creative nature of the owner.
Just as creativity is never orthodox,
neither is engineering. When combined
and executed concisely, only great work
of fnesse results.
Taking things up a notch, Ide Etcetera
went through a thorough and expensive
research to fnd a space-saving alternative
that will allow for the maximum
exploitation of the units height a
luxurious 4.5 metres of it. Using furniture
reinforced with steel, they act not only as
storage areas but also as the walls of the
unit, giving both structural support and
spatial division. What was originally a
1 200 square feet unit expanded to some
2 000 square feet, adding the luxury of
space to that of height.
Equipped with extensive creativity,
expressive ideas and excellent
engineering, Ide Etcetera takes the world
of design and Soho Living by storm.

a breath a of life ff
Design in the world of healthcare.
I
t is known that design is not just
about aesthetics. It is also about
functionality which has really
taken root and blossomed over
the 19th Century. Today as modernism
soars, the designing world is boldly
taking the concept of practicality and
relevance into new territories.
Recalling the insightful words of world
renowned architect Walter Gropius in
his address on the direction and role of
architecture and design, he said that
they must necessarily be a creative efort
to integrate simultaneously design,
construction and economy of any given
task with its social end. In other words,
design must be the harmonious point of
marriage between spatial dimensions and
purpose, spatial aesthetics and function.
At the helm of this push and an
expert of the trait, one of the longest
serving Interior Design Consultancies in
Singapore, Davenport Campbell, strives
with resounding innovation. The key
to their success lies in their foresight
and clarity in integrating design with
its social end. Since the inception of its
parent company in Sydney, Australia in
1977, Davenport Campbell has always
sought to deliver a range of solutions
that satisfy user demands, investment
criteria, marketplace trends and
environmental concerns.
Abiding in their clear aim, their local
operation which was established in
1982, has since conquered new grounds.
Traditionally providing design for specialist
corporate ofce, they have adapted their
expertise into the healthcare industry.
Amongst their many successful projects is
the East Shore Hospital.
Identifying the growing importance
of preventative care versus sickness care,
Davenport Campbell played a crucial
role in injecting new life into this ever-
evolving industry. Gone are the days
when hospitals are sterile places of bleak
hope and morbidity. Resurrecting East
Shore with a fresh sense of hope and
recovery, the hospital takes on a new
attitude and drive as an all-inclusive
wellness centre.
Its open-ended lay-out with a clean
and sophisticated design is not only

vulnerability and perplexity. Behind its
seemingly simple and random construct,
lies a rigorous experimentation that strips
it down to its post-painterly technicalities.
In creating this rainbow decadence,
Davenport reveals, I control liquid, I use
colour, and I try to choreograph these
diferent elements together. There is a
lot of internal rigour to the process but
at the same time it is about chance. The
resulting collection, void of doctrine
and geometrical form, is a purely visual
experience that explores the physical
and psychological relationships between
viewer and his visual culture.
Born in Sidcup, London in 1966,
Davenport studied art at Northwich
College of Art and Design in Chesire
before going to Goldsmiths College from
where he graduated in 1988. Since then,
he has built an amazing portfolio of art
works including a 13-metre mural for
the Tate Triennial in 2003 and a 48-metre
long painting for Southwark Council and
Land Securities in 2006. His works can
be found in many important collections
worldwide such as the Daimler Chrysler
Collection in Stuttgart and the Weltkunst
Collection in Zurich.

Between the Lines, Ian
Davenports latest collection of art works
draws you in to a colour-coded spectrum
of vibrancy and complexity.
It began as an experimental reaction
to the painterly gestural approaches
of Abstract Expressionism. Now, a
revolutionary exploration of artistic
expression, post-painterly abstractions
push beyond its contemporary to leave
behind all the associated grandiose
drama and spirituality. Instead, it
strives for an anonymity in execution
that is characterized by linearity
of design, vivaciousness of colour,
openness of composition and lack of
detail and incident.
A prominent artist of post-painterly
abstractions, Davenport displays his
mastery of this artistic form. Truly lacking
in detail and incident, every piece within
the collection is but a crescendo of
colours orchestrated into rows of lines.
Truly vivacious in colour and open in
composition, the psychedelic sequencing
of colours fow in varying widths to form
concentric puddles at the base of the
canvases. The sensory immediacy of
the collection is saturated in its fuidity,
boldness and viewer accessibility.
Yet sitting ever so subtly between the
lines, there is a pervasive sense of rigidity,

With boldness, the studio apartment

n the private lands of Blandford

the scope of design, however, all
pale in comparison to the one that sits

number 70 conceals a characteristic

Conjured by designer Keith Kang of

At once warm and classy, the open

is like a gracious host, drawing you in
with its easy charisma. In achieving this
aesthetic efect, furnishing textures are
key. Defned by plump softness is the
living room where a plus size sofa of
woven linen in medium grey, makes no
qualms about announcing its presence
of comfort. The dining area by contrast
is defned by an absence of the plush.
A set of dining furniture in clear acrylic

space is imbued with a cool classiness.
While texture appropriates perimeters

thematic application of black and dark

sophistication, the master bedroom is the
envy of every home-owner. A sanctuary
of intimate privacy and rest, its design
refects an intricate sensitivity to these
very needs and characteristics of the
space. Central to this is the extravagant
walk-in wardrobe. Boldly stretching across
the entire length of the room, it clearly
and neatly defnes spatial functions. This
essentially allows rest to be a wholesome
and organic experience without the
clutter of a dresser impeding on it.
Creatively constructed, the charm
of the bespoke wardrobe doesnt stop

privacy and space, its unconventional
wall of glass panels is as radical as it is
creative. Its bold stretch across the room
allows it to parallel the foor-to-ceiling

n designing the interiors of a
residence, beautiful aesthetics will
only form a shell of a home. To fll
the residential perimeter with the
succulence of sweet fruits, meaningful
aesthetics is required. Home to the Loh
family, this three storey semi-detach
house at Li Hwan Drive is a hallmark of
just such contemporary constancy and
meaningful beauty.
Designed by Constance Ann, Founder
and Principal Designer of Constann
Design since 1988, its interior and
architecture is imbued with minimalistic
appeal. Not however, without a pertinent
undercurrent of cohesiveness and
harmony speaks not just of aesthetic
know-how but also spatial sensitivity that
can only come with years of experience
and refned expertise. Key to this is the
use of glass panels to fll the frames of the
staircase which gives this living space a
sense of mellifuous openness. It also lifts
the weighted bulk of the staircase and
creates the illusion of depth.
A vision of sophisticated simplicity,
the interior is inviting and warm. Where
white and minimalism make for austere
aesthetics, Constance weaved brown
tones and black accentuations. An
interesting visual of texture, the brown
grains of the laminated television
wall livens the white palette in bold
punctuation. Paired with plush white
sofas, the living room gently embraces
you in homely comfort. Expressing
the same communal tone, a tasteful
combination of rich brown table and
black leather chairs anchors the dining
area in subtle elegance.
A space of working inspiration, the study room
is not only airy with its vast balcony doors but
also conducive with its unobstructed view of
the neighbourhoods skyline.
DCRS@home
72 Decorations | Volume 87
Even the kitchen space is an
expression of the family as a communal
body. This is where Mrs. Loh spends
most of her time and as she prepares
meals for the family, they like to gather in
casual fellowship, says Constance. Keenly
attuned to the familys needs, the island
table not only provides extra storage but
also facilitates familial interactions.
While cooking meals keeps the heart
of the family warm and the bellies
satisfed, cleaning can be a chore and
ridding the interiors of the home of
greasy odours a bigger headache. With
much design sensitivity, Constance
applied a dry-wet concept to the lay
out of the kitchen, keeping the area for
what she termed greasy cooking on the
outskirts of the home.
Epitomizing the homes deep sense
of wellness and quiet soulfulness, a
luxurious air-well runs through the core
of the home. Tastefully adorned with
textured tiles that mimics a brick wall, its
a natural visage that fnds complements
in every weather. Yet more than just an
extravagance, the air-well provides air
circulation and allows natural light to
stream into the rooms and the landing
area, keeping the entire interior bright
and airy. From every room, at every foor
and in every weather, the natural visage
of the air-well can be enjoyed.
Tranquil luxury draws you into its
bosom as you move into the private
enclave of the home. Veneered wood
fooring makes for a cosy spread whilst
bespoke cabinetry accentuates the living
space with class and appropriate moods.
Evoking romantic grandeur in the master
bedroom is a shimmery grey wallpaper
feature with foral motifs. The study area,

solely dependent on its artistic appeal.

home space that efectively
appeals across generations
and works for their diverse
needs is sensitively conjured
and tastefully created. Seated in the
heartland of Kovan, one such home
embodies this very essence of spatiality
and design. Actualized by Alvin Low,
Design Director of Beaux Monde, its
interiors are a beauteous balance of
aesthetics and functionality.
In approaching Alvin, home-owner Mrs
Lilian Sim had but one design aspiration,
I wanted an abode that was beautiful
without losing the essence of home. There
isnt a purpose in creating a house that
has the stylish standards and function of
a showroom, and none of the comforts or
convenience of homely living. Housing
three generations under its vast roof, the
home is indeed classy yet cosy, modern
yet warm, beautiful yet practical. The key
to its aesthetic efect? Less is more, piped
both Lilian and Alvin in unison.
The minimalist appeal throughout
the home is undeniable. Entering the

and modesty of space greet the eyes.
Crucial to this design experience are the
glass panels that form the frame of the
staircase and a portion of the wall. Its
clear surface not only creates a visual and
spatial connectivity from living to dining
area but also facilitates the fow of natural
light in and throughout the entire space.
Contributing to the elegant simplicity
of the design are earth-tone hues. The
outdoor patios are bold refections of
relaxation with their timbre foorboards
and rich dark brown furnishings. The
indoor space on the other hand, is
a softer visage of crme, whites and
cappuccino brown. Of the colour choices,
Lilian explained, We really wanted a
cosy ambience for the home. One that is
evergreen and brings the tranquillity of
the outdoors in. Melding the two spaces
together, timbre-like adaptations are
made to its interiors through furnishings
that are of the same dark shades of
brown as the patio furniture. Unique to
this design adaptation are the windows.
Specially coated in a medium brown, they
complete the woody textuality of this
interior design.
Spaciousness and its utility are both a
luxury and convenience within the house
of Sims. For the young triplets, whether
they are running out in the front yard
or enjoying their toys in the playroom,
it presents to them an imaginarium
of adventure and endless fun. For the
elderly, the uncluttered space allows for
ease of movement. Epitomizing this is
their bathroom, deliberately expanded
to meet their elderly needs. For Lilian
and her husband, the vast space is a
blessing for the luxurious functionality
that it provides for all. When asked what
was their favourite spatial feature of
the home, Lilian replied cheerily, My
husband loves the outdoors. I often fnd

him indulging in his leisure activities
in the patio. For myself, it has to be the

where picking the materials and textures
to create my private sanctuary took on a
more personal and engaging experience.

relevant in its ability to meet the varied
needs of its home-owners, this home
is truly a wholesome embodiment of
restful cosiness, gentle warmth and
beautiful functionality.

Lori says. Indeed, across the spatiality of
the home, the design is clutter-free. More
than just a visage of elegance, its healthy
balance of clean lines and unobtrusive
curves create a deep sense of fuidity
and openness. Applied in the homes
communal spaces, the living, dining and
bar areas are made perfect for social
gatherings of any kind.
Also about balance, Lori tells us, The
design direction with the Hollywood
Hills home [is based on] the yin and the
yang sleek architecture blended with
reclaimed materials. Using only green
materials such as bar-all FSC certifed
wood, stone and organic fabrics, the
interior is transformed into an earthy
collage of cosiness and class. A favourite
feature of Loris is the reclaimed white oak
panelling on the tall columns throughout
the house. It really softens all of the glass
and stone, Lori gushes. Just as luxurious
as its leather counterparts, the green
furniture with their organic fabrics and
non-toxic adhesives lend contemporary
charm to the interiors.
Green living doesnt mean that one
must necessarily become archaic though
falling back on the basics is essential.
I call this project the Flintstones meet
the Jefersons,Lori enthuses, It makes
everyone smile. Whilst the natural
materiality of the furnishings make
cleaning and maintenance a simple
and toxic-free afair, state-of-the art
technology sets energy consumption at
an eco-conscious capacity. Installed with
a complete earth-friendly system of solar
power, smart home technology, radiant
heating and water fltration, this Hollywood
Hills home is as savvy as it is stylish.
Though an expert on luxury lifestyle,
Lori holds frmly that Green lifestyle is
not accessible only to the rich, Green
interiors may be had by all. The frst
thing I do is shop at home and clear
out clutter. Anyone on any budget can
do these things. Refecting on its role
and development, she points out that
it is essentially about personal choices,
As awareness grows, and it is growing,
more and more people will want healthy
personal and global environments.
Cleaning the home with non-toxic
products (e.g. white vinegar) is a huge
green step, as opposed to introducing
harsh chemicals into an environment
daily or weekly.

BRIGHTER FOR LESS
Thats what new high efciency light bulbs can do for you, lasting 20 times longer and
using far less electricity. They may cost a little more but you save loads on bills. LED bulbs
are the greatest of them all since Thomas Edison invented the incandescent lamp but
the latter uses more energy to light up our homes. Switch to LED bulbs and compact
fuorescent bulbs. They give you the same light and cost less on electricity bills.
The next bright idea is the Philips OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes). Like LED
except that it uses organic semiconductor material, OLEDs emit difused light that can
interact with you so it dims and brightens in response. How cool is that!

Set in confict against market forces,
the fght against deforestation has
been a trying one. For a long time,
conservation eforts could not bridge
the gap between the environment and
the economy. With its proft margins on
the rise, forest conservation seemed an
increasingly lost cause.
Almost but not quite. In refning
their eforts, they have since brought
conservation into the global marketplace.
The trick is, as Carlos Scaramuzza,
Director of Conservation at the WWF of
Brazil puts it, Making markets work so
that conservation makes business sense.
No longer just about creating national
parks, these non-proft organizations
are now rolling out Forest Sustainability
Programmes which directly targets
deforestations while ensuring economic
feasibility. Besides the Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC), other similar organizations
like the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
(SFI) and Programme for the Certifcation
of Forest Schemes (PEFC) have
joined the Green fght. Working with
corporations and other organizations,
their overarching push is to promote
responsible and ethical management of
the worlds forests.
So how do they account for
responsible and ethical management of
such a vast resource?
When forest owners and managers,
wood manufacturers and products
come under their forest sustainability
programme, each is to adhere to a
stringent chain of custody standard.
Every stage of the timbre production,
from procurement to processing to
manufacturing and fnally retailing, is
tracked and accounted for through a
strict system of inspection carried out
by the organization. Upon ensuring
that the timbre is neither illegally
obtained nor manufactured with
excessive wastage, a Chain of Custody
Certifcation (CoC) is issued.
Perhaps the most important question
thus far is: WHO is in on this green loop?
Forming part of Mother Earths Green Army.

consumers of the importance
of sustainability in the wood

indication of their product integrity
among consumers. Fellow eco-nistas can

Every responsible act goes a long way in
protecting our precious forest reserves.
No one takes environmental sustainability as seriously
as Tvilum. A quick look into their track records
reveals that all of Tvilums furniture are PVC free; all
chipboard wastes are recycled (8% of waste wood are
used to general heating while 92% are recycled into
new boards) and an impressive 34% of their energy
consumption is carbon-neutral. It is a no wonder that
their designs exude the true spirit of ergonomic beauty.

Simple yet divine, Drift is the
embodiment of your summer
daydreams as it invites you to
eloquent relaxation.
Ingredients (serves 2)
8 small beetroots, tops trimmed
A small bunch of fresh rosemary, leaves picked
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Extra Virgin Olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
A small bunch of fresh fat-leaf parsley, leaves picked and roughly chopped
A small bunch of fresh tarragon or basil, leaves picked and roughly chopped
4 X 100g fllet steaks
For cottage cheese dressing :
4 heaped tablespoons cottage cheese
1 lemon, halved Extra Virgin Olive oil
A few sprigs of fresh thyme, leaves picked
Method
1. Light your barbecue.
2. Lay the beetroots on a double layer of foil about 30cm (60cm unfolded)
and sprinkle the rosemary leaves on top. Roll up the foil, folding in the
edges and twisting the ends together. Stab the foil a few times all over
with a knife to allow the smoke to get inside and favour the beetroots.
3. Lift the rack of your barbecue and carefully insert your foil package among
the coals, making sure you place some coals on top too. Leave it to cook
for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the beetroots are tender, then remove the
package and allow it to cook down. Unwrap it and remove the beetroots,
discarding the rosemary sprigs.
4. Once cooled lightly, peel the beetroots and discard the charred skin. Cut
the beets into irregular chunks and place in a bowl. Add the vinegar, 3
tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive oil, plenty of salt and pepper and half the
parsley and tarragon. Toss, have a taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary.
5. Put the cottage cheese into a bowl and add the juice and fnely grated zest
from half your lemon. Stir in 2 glugs of Extra Virgin Olive oil, the thyme
leaves and some salt and pepper. Gently fold it altogether, so the oil and
lemon marble through the cottage cheese. Taste the dressing and squeeze
in a bit more lemon juice if you like.
6. Lightly rub a little dressing onto your 4 steaks. Place them on the barbecue
and cook to your liking, turning them every minute, then remove them to a
plate and allow to rest.
7. To serve, divide the dressed beets between two plates. Top each plate
with 2 steaks and a spoonful of cottage cheese dressing. Scatter over the
remaining herbs and enjoy!
