Ny piioiities foi my CNP plan aie to pioviue stuuents with a well-iounueu musical
expeiience. I am tiying to accomplish this by tiying to touch uiffeient styles of
music, well known banu composeis, anu the use of folk songs. I am tiying to achieve
a macio-micio-macio stiuctuie on a laige scale by staiting out with a ieau thiough
of each piece anu then slowly woiking on smallei sections anu then slowly woiking
my way back out. Within each ieheaisal I am tiying to stait out with laigei sections
anu then woiking in uepth on those sections. Foi example on E.3.(7".#' I spenu a lot
of my time pei uay on one movement. 0ne of the biggest factois that went into my
planning was tiying to fit in time foi CNP activities othei than playing music. Foi
example, giving my stuuents time to listen to anu wiite about music was inteiesting.
I tiieu to incoipoiate it moie towaius the enu of a ieheaisal wheie they hau been
playing a lot so the stuuents coulu take a bieak fiom playing.

Above all, Joy is an expression of its namesake: simple, unabashed joy.
A boisterous, uninhibited quality is implied in the music, not only at climactic
moments, but also by the frequent presence of sudden and dramatic stylistic
contrasts. The main melody and overall mood of the work (and its companion
piece, Joy Revisited) were inspired by a signal event: the birth of our first child.
The intense feelings that most any father would feel on such a day were, in my
case, accompanied by a simple little tune which grabbed hold of me in the
hours preceding her birth, and refused to let go throughout the day and many
days thereafter. Indeed, until I jotted it down in my sketchbook, it did not
release its grip.
Seven years and two children later, I stumbled upon that old sketch and
discovered (or rediscovered) that it would serve perfectly as the foundation for
a joy-filled concert band overture.

mateiial is tieateu in gieat uepth anu with vaiiety. The woik is a banu masteipiece
which has long since become a favoiite with auuiences.

,-'8"0' 230 E2-$+ is an example of two contiasting styles. The Pieluue slowly staits
out the piece anu then seamlessly tiansitions into the Naich. ,-'8"0' 230 E2-$+ is
one of the most populai pieces wiitten by Bob Naigolis, otheis incluue: *+' *H%(
E.3"#' 79&I+%39 anu 7%80.'-/6 ,-%$'//.%3 230 7H%-0 J23$'.

These pieces aie intenueu foi the young playei, the oluei playei who still
iemembeis being young, anu the olu playei who woulu like to feel young again.
They aie auaptations fiom a seiies of piano pieces I wiote foi my uaughteis Abby
anu Beboiah on each of theii biithuays uuiing theii pie-teen yeais. I thought some
of these appiopiiate foi the banu meuium, anu selecteu Biithuay Naich, A Tenuei
Waltz, anu Bell Caiol to foim this Nini-Suite. They aie obviously puiposefully simple
in constiuction anu textuie, but hopefully will stimulate the young playei anu please
the listenei iegaiuless of his age.
