    By Martin Andersen Special to The Chicago Tribune May 10, 1987 BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — Argentina, one of seven countries that do not recognize divorce, is all but certain to legalize it now that the Senate has passed a civil marriage reform bill. The bitterly controversial measure, opposed by the powerful Roman Catholic Church, was approved Friday by a 26-14 vote. Although it must be reconciled with a version passed late last year by the Chamber of Deputies, its approval is considered a foregone conclusion, political observers here said. Congress had delayed final consideration of the divorce bill until after Pope John Paul II concluded a weeklong visit here that ended on Palm Sunday last month. Although Argentines in general are not a particularly religious lot, more than 90 percent of the country`s 30 million people are Catholics, and Roman Catholicism is the state religion. The six other countries that do not allow divorce are Ireland, Paraguay, Malta, Andorra, San Marino and the Philippines. During his visit to Argentina, the pontiff mounted a stern offensive against the marriage reform bill, telling crowds that divorce destroys the foundations of society. Nevertheless, most public opinion polls showed that 70 percent to 80 percent of the adult population support the bill.
