8TH GRADE ELA: BOOK REVIEW

Task: Write a review of your science fiction guided reading book for next years 8th graders.

What Excellent looks like Opinion: The review includes the


readers opinion of the book and details to support it. Plot Summary: The review includes a brief summary of the plot, which does not spoil things for the reader. The summary helps the reader decide for himself/herself whether to read the book or not. Characters: The review includes a brief description of the main character(s), which does not spoil things for the reader. The character description helps the reader decide for himself/herself whether to read the book or not. Audience: The review is written for the appropriae audience: 8th-grade students. Peer Review: The writer has had one other student evaluate his/her work using a PQP form, and has submitted a completed PQP form with his/her final review.

Mechanics:
There are very few spelling or convention errors. The writer has used spell check, has read his/her work aloud to himself/herself to listen for errors, and has made necessary edits. Presentation: If typed, the final document has a 12-point standard font such as Helvetica or Times New Roman,1-inch margins, and is double spaced. If hand-written, writing is neat, the review is written in black or blue ink, the student has done his/her best to make it easy to read, and the paper is on a loose-leaf sheet of paper without tears or jagged edges.

Mechanics: Spelling and convention


(grammar, capitals, punctuation) mistakes challenge the readers understanding.

Presentation: If typed, the final document


does not have a standard font, 12-point type, 1-inch margins, and it is not double spaced. If hand-written, the writing is sloppy, difficult to read, not written in black or blue ink, and/or it is still in a notebook or has tears or jagged edges.
