GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS: an overview

A computer can save and interpret graphic images in a variety of formats. Some of the most common are:
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) TIFF (Tagged Information File Format) PIC (PICTure) BMP (bitmap) TGA (Targa) PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS: an overview

What are differences for each file format and how to select which format to use?

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS: gif and jpg

GIF 8 bits of color depth or 256 colors Gif compresses drawings and cartoons that only have a few colors much better than jpeg JPEG 24 bits of color depth (millions of colors) is powerful but uses a lossy compression method. JPEG introduces visible defects & sharp edges and lines that blur, especially with small-size text. JPEG format is used when an image has many colours, whereas GIF is more suitable for images with fewer colours.

Advantages of GIF files GIF is the most widely supported graphics format on the Web GIFs of diagrammatic images look better than JPEGs

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS: png

PNG Portable Network Graphics The Portable Network Graphics format will likely be the successor to the GIF file format. PNG is expected to become a mainstream format for Web images and could replace GIF entirely. It is platform independent and should be used for single images only (not animation). Compared with GIF, PNG offers greater color support and better compression, gamma correction for brightness control across platforms, better support for transparency, and a better method for displaying progressive images.

Advantages of JPEG images Huge compression ratios mean faster download speeds JPEG produces excellent results for most photographs and complex images

Which file format should be used: Small images, like icons and buttons: GIF or PNG Line art, grayscale (black and white), cartoons: GIF or PNG 24-bit color-depth lossless Image: PNG, JPG Scanned images and photographs: JPG Large images or images with a lot of detail: JPG Animated icons : GIF

GRAPHIC FILE FORMATS: bmp

BMP Windows Bitmap The Bitmap file format is used for bitmap graphics on the Windows platform only. Unlike other file formats the BMP format stores image data from bottom to top and pixels in blue/green/red order. Compression of BMP files is not supported, so they are usually very large.
