Action Film Code and Conventions

Action films are like every other film Genre and have a various set of codes and conventions that many will include in their product. Action films are usually centred on a protagonist hero who has to overcome a series of challenges which test them physically and mentally. Many conventions are included in these films and include: A 12/15 certificate which maximises your audience to a teenage audience. These are chosen due to the controversial actions that are initiated in these films. Teenagers are thought to have the common sense not to recreate actions depicted in these films rather than younger children due to obvious reasons.

These films are often hybridised with other genres which create sub genres. These are evident in Sci Fi action films:

Action films are usually coupled with a high production team and values which constantly utilise CGI and fast paced editing:

They usually consist of classic Hollywood narrative structures, with the 5 most common being: Revenge- The villain has left the hero for dead or killed a vital part of the heros existence such as a pet or relative. The righteous hero engages in a furious rage to try and bring the villain down.

George Feast Escape/Siege- Our hero is incarcerated inside a secure location, using his or her cunning wit, cunning and blood thirsty tendency to escape.

Assassination- Groups together a clique of people to either kill or incarcerate a villainous character.

Opression- The hero takes it upon him or herself to defend a group of oppressed people from catalysts such as the government or an institution.

George Feast Kidnap- A person of great interest, such as a relative, is kidnapped by a villainous character. The valiant hero fights to free the person from oppressed captivity.

Other conventions include, cause and effect predictable chain of events, Dramatic non diegetic sound and Dominant representations of Gender, Female or male main role.

Technical aspects of Science Fiction films are evident with the convention of the establishing shot. The establishing shot of a Science Fiction film usually show a large expanse of land that is different to what we know and are denizens. E.G a dystopian or futuristic city.

George Feast Due to the film being set in areas that dont exist nearly all the sound is non diegetic. This is due to the fact that you cannot produced diegetic sound of something that does not exist. Science Fiction settings usually consist of an alien world that is not familiar with an audience. A dystopian post apocalypse setting or a futuristic setting that is of an age of improved technological advancement.

The iconography of a science fiction film will usually include weapons of mass destruction which we couldnt comprehend of creating in our time period or an alien source of power. Films such as the matrix also include a lot of various technologically advanced computers or A.I that we could not understand.

The Narrative structure of a science fiction film will to follow the protagonist or protagonists as they try to overcome an unrelenting force or simply try and survive in the settings they are denizens of. The films usually relate to philosophical themes such as good vs evil and may even have some religious or cultural context. The protagonist will usually be an underdog who has to grow and progress as a person to overcome this evil.

George Feast Character archetypes of Sicence fiction protagonists are either 1) The arrogant energetic hero who is enthusiastic to stop this evil or 2) the person who doesnt understand why they are a part of this cause and constantly questions themselves and the situation. Both of these archetypes will have to undergo a certain extent of character development to overcome the antagonists.
