Assessor`s Training Course -> Introduction

NABL conducts third-party assessment of the technical competence of testing, calibration and medical laboratories therefore seeks experts with technical knowledge and current experience of working in a laboratory to train them as its Technical Assessors to conduct on site assessment of laboratories that perform testing and calibration. Guided by its requirements, NABL constantly endeavours to increase its pool of trained assessors from all appropriate sources to cater to ever increasing demands of accreditation. The assessors are drawn from pool of experts in various fields / facilities and actively involved in testing/ calibration in a laboratory or industry. Some of the readily available sources of experts in the country are any of the leading laboratories in government as well as private sectors

Assessors training programmes are conducted by NABL. In order to qualify, potential Assessors are required to attend a 5-days residential NABL Assessor Training Course. NABL organizes Assessor Training courses for ISO/ IEC 17025:2005 assessors for testing (other than medical) & calibration laboratories and ISO 15189:2007 assessors for medical laboratories. This course is a comprehensive look at the ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO 15189 requirements, as well as the accreditation process, including assessment of a laboratorys competence

The course material is based on APLAC TR 001 Guidelines on Training Course for Assessors and ILAC G3 Guidelines for Training Courses for Assessors used by Laboratory Accreditation Schemes and ISO 19011: 2011 Guidelines for Guidelines for auditing management systems.

Those who complete this course, NABL may enrol them as NABL - Assessors provided they have qualified in the examination which NABL conducts at the end of the course. NABL empanels only those experts who sign a contract with NABL.

The above training courses are residential and the course fee include charges for course material, boarding, lodging etc.

The criteria for the selection of experts/assessors for NABL are based on the following:

(i) Qualification and Experience Requirements of Assessors:

For becoming NABL assessor for testing and calibration laboratories (ISO/IEC 17025), the minimum educational qualification requirements are a Bachelors degree in Engineering/ Technology or a Masters degree in Science. The experience requirements are a minimum of five years work experience in the relevant field of testing/ calibration, at supervisory level and above.

The Assessors for medical laboratories (ISO 15189) are required to be postgraduate in relevant medical fields or Ph.D. in relevant scientific fields

with work experience at supervisory level and above for a minimum of five years.

(ii) Other important aspects considered for selection are:

a) Extensive experience in performing testing and calibration.

b) Experience in laboratory management and operations:

-Current responsibilities for day to day management of testing and / or calibration.

-Development and implementation of laboratory quality assurance procedure.

c) A high degree of communication skills, both oral and written.

d) Related professional activities including publication of technical papers in the testing or calibration, standards development and participation in conducting and / or coordinating proficiency programmes.

(iii) Preferred Age: 35 to 55 years

Please note that the above course is not an open course. The selection for the candidates for the training of Assessors shall be done by NABL based on its current / anticipated requirements in specific fields / facilities and availability of trained assessors in its pool. The selection of participants is at the sole discretion of NABL. Only the selected participants will be communicated with further details like course fees, venue, accommodation etc.
