ways following Managed Intensive Grazing (MIG),

FREE HAM DINNER- A Free Community Dinner will be served on Saturday, March 29th from
noon to 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Cambridge. This months menu features ham, creamed
potatoes, mixed vegetables and cheesecake. New Skete Parish is providing the meal. Reservations are
not necessary. Doors will open promptly at 11:30 a.m. Take-outs are available after 1:00 p.m. only for
those unable to attend, and only after all those attending have been fed. There are no second meal
take-outs. ALL ARE WELCOME These monthly meals are intended to provide a home-cooked hot
meal for those living alone or those perhaps needing a little company. We also know that funds run
short at the end of the month and these meals can help stretch food budgets a little further. Hosted by
First Baptist Church of Cambridge with the assistance of eight community churches and organizations,
the meals have been a blessing to no fewer than 60 and up to 250 people per meal. First Baptist Church
is located at 29 West Main St. between Cambridge Village Market and Glens Falls Bank. The church
is handicap accessible. If there are questions or the possibility of cancellation due to weather, or if your

Plan for a Winning Season
The prospect of tight margins for many grain producers has created considerable anxiety. Much
like a sports team with several years of winning success under its belt, producers have had a similar
level of success. But we know all too well that maintaining a winning season every single year is
virtually impossible. In the cycle of success, a coach and team occasionally have to face a new
season with an entirely different set of challenges. Maybe they lost a few key players or the
competition level increased due to a conference or division change. One or two variables could
double the difficulty of competition within a year.
Rebuild Goals. As steadily increasing input costs and a 50% reduction in price opportunity have
changed the playing field, farmers need to think of 2014 as a rebuilding year. While the conditions
have changed, the rules are the same. For some, just staying in the game might be a win, but why
not plan for success and set realistic goals to win a few games during the season? Its a necessity
if you dont want to gamble.
Sports teams look for creative plays to
surprise their opponents. They methodically
work to improve their weaknesses, but their
primary focus is on taking advantage of their
strengths. Think of your farm-what can
you do creatively or more intensively to
enhance profitability and growth? Consider
hybrid positioning, seed placement,
equipment adjustments, crop scouting,
nitrogen management and working to better
understand the markets.
By the same token, while youre managing
costs, dont unintentionally rob yieldits the one variable that can impact profit opportunity the
most. Remember, a sports team with a killer defense can accomplish a great deal, but without the
ability to score, its impossible to win.
Throughout the season, a sports team plays one game at a timetweaking, fine-tuning or changing
strategies all together based on their opponent and current circumstances. Getting started on the
wrong foot or losing the first game or two doesnt mean the season as a whole will be a failure.
Evaluating the situation and making the necessary changes at any point during the season could
turn things around for a positive outcome.
Think about breaking your farming season into several components. Start with a complete
understanding of your financial condition. Net worth, working capital and cash flow will help you
know the strength of your team. However, the most important part of your teams strength is your
people. Do you have the right people in the right place at the right time with the right set of skills?
If youre 100% confident in all of these things, your team is ready to play. If not, get yourself and
your team focused on the challenges ahead.
Create Your Win. Walk through a variety of scenarios and see what the numbers look like under
different conditions. Discuss all of the individual responsibilities for the season so that everyone
clearly understands their role. Review the plans often and look for weak links in the chain. Focus on
fixing the weak points and strengthening the strong points. Teams that exemplify the greatest discipline
will eventually overcome the greatest challenges. Your farming operation can do the same. To
maximize their effectiveness during the season, sports teams analyze tons of statistics.

Bring a homemade dish to share and enjoy a delicious, mostly organic meal featur-
ing foods from the Buying Club. In the spirit of the group's mission, please avoid
overly processed and genetically engineered ingredients in your dish. Please bring
your own place setting to conserve resources. While based in Greenwich, the
Buying Club has members in various communities, including Saratoga Springs and
Troy. Founded in 2013, the Buying Club gives members access to great quality,
organic foods at wholesale prices. Current suppliers are Cayuga Pure Organics
(upstate New York grains, beans, flours) and Tierra Farms (organic nuts, dried
fruits, coffee beans, chocolate, granolas).
The Buying Club functions as a cooperative with everybody that orders pitching
in. Those that are unable to help pay a small additional charge. There is no fee to

SPRING CONCERT- On Sunday, April 6 at 7:00pm, Hubbard Hall is pleased to announce a Music
from Salem chamber music concert, featuring MfS director Lila Brown (viola), pianist Marc Ryser, and
the Julius Quartet (Boston Conservatorys honors string quartet). This dreamy program includes many
unusual pieces: Martinu's sonata for viola and piano full of the sounds of ringing bells, from his child-
hood as the son of the village bellringer; a luscious late romantic work by Faure's Belgian student,
Charles Koechlin; and the virtuosic Concertpiece by Enesco. Beethoven's "Harp" string quartet (opus
74) will be performed by the vibrant young Julius String Quartet, and all the musicians will come
together to play the captivating Scenes from Andalucia for viola, piano, and string quartet by the spaniard
Joaquin Turina. Let this enchanting concert vanquish any remains of winter chill! The April 6 concert
will take place at 7:00pm at historic Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Admission is pay what you can,
so everyone can attend! (recommended amount: $20). Pay at the door, or purchase advance tickets at

BBQ DINNER- VOSCA, a local community service organization of Cambridge Central School
seniors, will have their annual Chicken Barbeque at the American Legion on Rte 22 on Sunday, March
30 prepared by the fantastic Legion Chefs. Time is 4:00-6:00 PM and while take-outs are preferred,
it is possible to eat in. Tickets are $10, and this will support their volunteer work in South Carolina
where they will be rebuilding homes of the very impoverished over their spring vacation n April.
Last year, tey helped repair 11 homes.)
There is also a Many Prizes Raffle, and tickets for both can be purchased from any volunteer, and
will be on sale at the IGA Grocery in Cambridge the week of March 22-28, or at Stewart's Friday and
