The Townsville Marlins and the Wollongong Miners went head to head in one of the greatest chess battles ever seen. Football was back for everyone to enjoy and appropriately the night ended with Miner Quarterback Richie Davis being tackled inches short of the goal line as time expired. All credit to them (Wollongong). They are a great team and they pushed us all the way. But we hung tough and we showed we are not one dimensional. Our defence was great and we can run and pass said Patrick Gill after the game. Townsville started in the best possible way. Xavier Gooden exploded up the middle on a blitz and he smashed Davis into the ground forcing the ball free. Scott Cameron swooped and took the ball 36 yards in for the score which stood even after Video examination. He is so fast. I did not see him even though he came from right in front of me Davis said. The Miners though looked the better team and produced two long drives that both ended in field goals. But Gill started to show what he could do right before the half with a 9 play drive that was mostly pass and his game got the Marlins within field goal range for Henerai Lowe to send the teams into the break at 10-6. The Marlins fumbled the ball away for a second time to start the third and this time Davis made them pay the full price when he scampered over from short range. But despite being shut down in the second half, JP Gutherson still had enough game to put the home team back in front when he ran in, spinning through tackles to score from 6 yards out. The game was changing by the play and Davis had thought he had won the game for the visitors when he found Tight End Gareth Lussick over the middle with a sharp dart that squeezed in between defenders. But with just 1m27 remaining Gill came up with the best play of all. They had tight coverage. (Dan) Whittle worried me as he was pressed on (Keenan) Allen but that meant Brooke (McDonnell) was lined up against a backer. When we snapped the ball Roy Williams rotated his coverage over to McDonnell but I new Brooke had the step. I just had to throw it as far as I could. He threw it 48 yards and McDonnell celebrated with the washed out fans who had sat through a thunderstorm before the game kicked off. Wollongong were still not dead however. Davis moved the Miners quickly down the field. He got them to the 1 yard line but and incomplete pass gave them one last shot with just 3 seconds remaining. Going 3 wide Davis looked like he would pass but Townsville called time out and sent in an additional D-Linemen to watch for the sneak. And that move proved pivotal as Davis jammed himself up under the centre but there was nowhere to go and the game was done. This is now one of the Leagues truly great rivalries.
