Fiji's media authority has announced a unit will be set up to monitor the way media outlets report on the election campaign. The chairman of the Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA), Ashwin Raj, made the announcement at a press conference in Suva on Wednesday. Mr Raj said MIDA will make sure that newspapers and radio and television stations do not show bias in the way they report on politics. He stressed the unit would be independent. MIDA will have the ability to demand a right of reply to all opinion columns, and also wants the code of conduct to extend to foreign journalists working in Fiji and any local journalists working for foreign media outlets. Penalties for journalists and media organisations found guilty of breaching media decree guidelines are fines or jail terms of up to five years.

Mr Raj also explained why it had lodged a complaint about ABC reports on Fiji media restrictions. The ABC's P a c i f i c correspondent Sean Dorney is currently banned from reporting in Fiji.

MIDA said it's not satisfied by the ABC's handling of a complaint against Mr Dorney. The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority confiscated a kava shipment tested positive for cocaine at the Nadi International Airport. FRCA in a statement said the kava was initially exported to China and was being re-exported back to a local kava dealer. Biosecurity Authority of Fiji officers had approached Customs officers for a THE Housing Authority recorded a profit of $441,000 in 2012 compared with $389,000 the previous year, reflecting a profit increase of 13 per cent. In its 2012 annual report, former chairman Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga said the net operating income increased from $9.8m in 2011 to $11.2m in 2012. He said this was an increase of 13.6 per cent while total operating expenses increased from $9.4m to $10.7m, also an increase of 13.6 per cent. "This commendable performance was achieved despite strong competition in the housing finance market and reduction in sales due to the delay in our new subdivision projects," BrigGen Tikoitoga said.

second opinion as they were suspicious of the shipment due to discrepancies in the Biosecurity Phytosanitary Certificate, the texture and the smell of the kava. Initial tests by Customs officers proved positive for cocaine and the case has been referred to Police for further investigations. During the year 2012, he said one of their major challenges was to explore a cheaper source of funding for new projects and on-lending to their target market. "This is critical if we are to provide affordable, decent and quality residential lots that enable Fijian families with low income to be able to benefit from these developments." As such, he said the board of directors and executive management began discussions with the Reserve Bank to set up a Housing Development Loan Facility that would allow them to create a home loan product that would redefine the local housing finance market. The product was launched at the first quarter of last year.

A person found to be handling the smallest amount of illicit drugs such as 5 grams or even over a kilogram could face life imprisonment or a fine not exceeding $1 million. Chief Operations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu said in light of the recent number of alleged drug finds, the public need to be reminded that there are hefty penalties if one is involved in such illegal activities. Tudravu said the law is clear and theres no two ways around it and if people think they can get off lightly then they should seriously think again. He said under the Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004, Section 4 (1), any person who without lawful authority imports or exports an illicit drug commits an offence and is liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding $1,000,000 or to imprisonment for life or both. He said those who even conspire with another to commit offences under the Act could find themselves face a fine

of up to $500,000 or an imprisonment term of 14 years. ACP Tudravu said all aspects from the importation, manufacturing, cultivation, transportation, dealings, and even to the act of conspiracy or having knowledge to commit an offence against the Act are covered in the legislation. Tudravu also commended the continuous vigilance of authorities on the seizures made at our borders. He added the public can also work with authorities on providing information that could help in the fight. In two cases now being investigated, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority confiscated a kava shipment after contents tested positive for cocaine. On Tuesday, a 39-year-old man appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court in relation to the discovery of a package allegedly containing illicit drugs found at the Nadi Airport Post office last week.

New Faces In Line-Up

THE proposed National Youth Party says it is ready to register next month to contest the general election later this year. Party interim president/leader Nayagodamu Korovou said they had collected about 5000 signatures for the registration process. Initially, he said the party had planned to team up with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama's yet-to-be-named party. "We invited him but he declined, so we had decided to contest the election on our own against Bainimarama's party, SODELPA, FLP, NFP and PDP," he said. Asked if his party would form a coalition with Rear Admiral Bainimarama's party, if they won seats, to form the next government, he said: "I think so we will form a coalition. It depends who will win." Mr Korovou said the party was banking on the support from youths, saying they had asked youth group leaders for their support. He said while the party was thankful for what the government had done for youths, it wanted to see a reflection of what was allocated in the national budget for youths. "We will have all new politicians in our line-up. "There will be completely new faces and a mixture of youths and adults as our candidates." "Our motto is One God, One People, One Nation and our symbol is a bunch of ripe bananas as in the Fiji flag. The bunch of bananas represents unity." Mr Korovou said the party's slogan was REDUCE "religion is free for all, education for all, democratic society, united in our effort, collaborate in our approach and entertain in our service". "This will be the only authentic new party that will totally support our youths," he said.

media on Wednesday, as well as the ABC's response. "They took offence to an interview that Sean Dorney did with some weeks back," Mr Pareti said. "Apparently Mr Dorney made some remarks concerning the freeness of the media or otherwise in Fiji. So they took that up." One of the first foreign journalists to be expelled from Fiji is Fairfax's New Zealand-based Pacific correspondent, Michael Field. He labeled the proposed media monitor "farcical".

Fiji To Set Up Media Monitor Ahead Of Election

Members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in Lautoka were told by their Commander Brigadier-General Mosese Tikoitoga to be neutral during the September elections. He said their role in the 2013 Constitution had changed and they needed to be neutral at all times. We need to defend the Constitution at all costs, Brigadier-General Tikoitoga

"What we're looking at now is a Fiji media scene that is so remote from any sort of concept of free and fair media that it's insulting to even try and offer any other suggestion that it is representative of open and fair democracy and media," Mr Field said. "This MIDA group seems to be totally about control and dictation and order." Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program made repeated efforts to contact Mr Raj for comment. Fiji is due to hold elections by September.

You have a right to choose a party, but do not be part of the campaign because it will ruin our standard in front of the Fijian people, who we have vowed to serve, Brigadier-General Tikoitoga said. It is alleged that Vamarasi pretended that the money would be invested in a sandalwood business however he used the money for his own use. He pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili. He will be sentenced on April 10, 2014.

National Federation Party leader Raman Pratap Singh confirms he will contest the general election but does not wish to continue as the leader of Fiji's oldest political party. Singh said he has served in an administrative role for too long and the time has come for fresh faces to lead the party. "We want to see new and fresh faces take charge of party operations and all appointments and announcements will

Singh said he was confident that whoever would take up the position to lead NFP would carry off well from where he left off. He added that the newly elected leader will discuss about the party's manifesto in his/her maiden speech.

Dengue Fight Cost Could Hit $5Million: Dr Kama

Fiji's fight against the dengue fever outbreak is estimated to cost 4 up to $5million as the Ministry of Health projects case numbers to go up to 48,000. National adviser communicable diseases Dr Mike Kama said the ministry has used up $97,000 for the first phase of the outbreak between December last year and January this year. "It had budgeted $1.2million for the second phase...from January to March," Dr Kama said. "And we have another budget now, another action plan from now till June. That's all costed up. I think it all comes up to $5million give or take." Dr Kama said the figures does not represent costs borne by individuals and families who are diagnosed with dengue fever. "So that it also any important cost. Everyone is at risk but some are more affected than others so for those that are on the poverty line or below the poverty line, the cost factor will amount to much than any other ordinary person," Dr Kama said. He admits because of the surge in the outbreak, the ministry has had to stretch its resources. "Primarily we are inundated with the numbers so this is in excess of the norm for the ministry so extra resources are needed," Dr Kama said. The Asian Development Bank says the 2014 elections in Fiji will also change the banks engagement with Fiji. ADB country economist for Nauru Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, Milovan Lucich made these comments in Sydney. He was speaking during the ADB Pacific Business Media Summit being attended by 20 journalists from the Pacific. The Asian Development Bank has also noted Fijis economic growth is picking up in the lead-up to elections this year. Mr Lucich said the signs of economic growth was evident. The Manila-based bank has not engaged fully with Fiji in recent years. There were allegations Australia pressured the bank not to provide Fiji support. The Asian Development Bank Outlook will be launched next week via road shows. The banks law expert has highlighted the significance of business law reforms for business development and growth. ADB Business Law reform expert, Aaron Levine, stressed if done correctly, business law reforms can be largely beneficial for foreign investment. He referred to Solomon Islands which recently utilised ADBs assistance to reform business laws there and this has exceeded expectations. One of the key features of the law reform was a central company registry online. With this, any individual wanting to invest in a company in Solomon Islands can check the company background with just a click of the mouse. And although this was the initial purpose of the registry, now those using the registry include the police as well as media amongst many others. Also, the business law reform has resulted in may increase in new incorporated companies with reduced processing time from 45 days to only one and a half days.

$26 Million Development For Province

The total cost of government development projects in Naitasiri Province for the years 2010 to 2013 stands at $26million. These projects include work in the areas of electricity, roads, education, and development in rural areas, water, health and agriculture. Rural Development permanent secretary Lieutenant Colonel Filipe Alifereti said the government spent $26m for projects in the province's 16 tikina. He said the project that received the largest amount of funding was the electrification project which took up more than $14m. "Other projects include roads with a cost of more than $3m, upgrading of our schools at $1.6m, development on the outskirts of the urban areas at $1.3m, with water cost at $1.2m," said Lt-Col Alifereti. "Projects under social welfare cost $900,000, projects under the Prime Minister's office cost $700,000 with health at $300,000."

Free heart surgeries will be performed in the country by a team of Australian surgeons in May. A team of medical professionals from Sydney Adventist Hospital, who are part of Open Heart International, are expected to review patients with heart diseases this week. Formerly known as Operation Open Heart, the organisation changed its name last year. The team has been coming to Fiji for the past 23 years and has performed 738 free surgeries since its inaugural trip to the country.

Free Heart Clinic

A statement from Open Heart International stated that up to 50 children and adults will be selected for life-changing surgery that will be conducted at the CWM Hospital. "It is incredibly important that Fijians who believe they have a heart issue visit a doctor or their nearest clinic," said Open Heart International's project co-ordinator Melanie Windus. "Doctors in the three main hospitals (Lautoka, Labasa and CWM) know how to refer patients to us if they believe the condition is serious."

Ambassador of Fiji to Nepal, Yogesh J Karan, said his country and Nepal can reap benefits through cooperation in trade and investment, education and tourism sectors. Business and trade opportunities between the two countries remain unexplored, the envoy pointed. He added that the opening of Fijis Consulate in Kathmandu and appointment of the consul is a first step towards expanding relations between the two countries. Ambassador Karan, who is based in New Delhi and concurrently serves as non-residential envoy to Nepal,

Call To Strengthen Nepal-Fiji Ties

said this at a press met in Kathmandu. Diplomatic relations between Nepal and Fiji were established in 1986. Fiji inaugurated its consulate office in Kathmandu yesterday and appointed youth entrepreneur Parash Shakya as its honorary consul. Interestingly, the country with a population of 8.76 lakh attracts more than seven lakh tourists annually. Pointing at Fijis experience of relatively high growth of tourism sectors, he said Nepal and his country can work together on the tourism promotion front. Geographically, the two countries are

vastly different. Nepal is landlocked, Fiji is water locked. The envoy said there are unique commonalities between the two countries, such as multicultural, multiethnic and multi religious features. He suggested that the Oceania country can be a destination for medical tourism for Nepalis as it offers world-class health services at much cheaper prices compared to neighbouring Australia and New Zealand. He added that Fiji can also be a destination for higher studies as has universities that offer quality education. Consul Shakya said the newly-opened consulate will work to enhance the ties between Nepal and Fiji.

Vendors Make Do With Whats Available

The increase in vegetable prices after the floods earlier last month has not deterred women vendors at the Valelevu market from selling garden crops for their livelihoods. Mere Rokobati has been a vendor at the market for the past twenty years. She said that the price of food at the markets, especially vegetables, was increasing. Cabbages and chillies have been very expensive. Before we used to buy one bale of cabbages for $5 a kilogram but now it is $15 and the eggplants we used to buy a bag for $5 but now its costing us almost $20 she said. Mrs Rokobati said the increase in vegetable prices was mainly because of flood damage on farmers who sold the vegetables to them. We cannot do anything more because the farmers too have been having losses since the floods and we have to understand that, Ms Rokobati said. She said that although the prices have increased she kept selling because she had to support her husband in looking after the welfare of their family. Another vendor, Katarina Qalomai who had been there for the past twelve years, agreed that vegetable prices had greatly increased after the floods last month. She added that she made good use of what was sold to her by the suppliers.

Manisha Narayan, 19, who is fighting for her life is suffering from acute myeloid leukemia [AML] a cancer that starts inside the bone marrow, the soft tissue inside bones that helps form blood cells. The cancer grows from cells that would normally turn into white blood cells. She recently graduated at the top of her beauty school class and had secured herself a great job as a beautician. Family supporter and administrator of the Help Manisha Campaign, Alex Bee, said the family was shocked to learn that their daughter was suffering from cancer. Imagine getting the news you have cancer, more specifically acute myeloid leukemia. Manisha is a happy young woman, beautiful inside and out and genuinely loves life, Mrs Bee said. The treatment is expensive, she said and they are not even sending her to Australia or New Zealand as that would be three times the cost.

Manishas Only Hope Is Overseas

A total of 657,704 visitors arrived on our shores last year, a 0.4 per cent decrease on the arrivals in 2012 of 660,590 arrivals. Government statistician Epeli Waqavonovono said in a statement Australia continued to be a major source of visitors to Fiji, accounting for 51.7 per cent of total arrivals last year. The figure shows Australia (340,151), New Zealand (108,239), the US (55,385), Pacific Islands (39,450) and Continental Europe (28,905) were Fiji's top five visitor source markets. They accounted for 87 per cent of total international visitor arrivals. "The July visitor arrival number of 67,836 was the highest in 2013, followed by the months of August and

Its going to be a long and painful treatment plan. We are desperately trying to raise funds to get Manisha to India where shell have the opportunity to get the appropriate treatment and beat the disease. Were not asking you to finance the whole treatment. We just want some help. So thats why weve set a reasonable goal in order to keep the fees low. Her elder brother, Shivneel Narayan, said he did not believe that her sister had cancer when he was informed of it. I just couldnt believe it because she is my only sister and was still young and she never got sick. Donors can put funds straight into her bank account. September with arrival numbers of 66,346 and 61,322 respectively." Mr Waqavonovono said arrivals from Australia peaked in September with 34,444 visitors, while arrivals from NZ stood at 15,786, the US at 6518 and the UK with 1806 peaked in July. Visitor numbers from Continental Europe with 2830 peaked in April. And according to ANZ's Asia Pacific Economics quarterly report, Fiji was one of the largest Pacific economies and was systemically important to the tourism industry in the region. Acting Commissioner of Police Ravi Narayan has set up a team to clamp down on the issue of piracy against local artists. He said in a release that local artists had been losing out to pirates. We are working in close consultation with the DPPs office who has stated their willingness to support us in our efforts to curb piracy, Acting Commissioner Narayan said. This team, he said, had been set up to conduct investigations specifically looking at the issue of copyright infringements. We now have a team that have undergone training and have the capacity to deal with cases of copyright infringements and we will work closely with the Fiji Performing Rights Association to protect local artists from losing their hard-earned money, he said. He is also calling on members of the association to assist Police. Copyright is the legal right granted to an author, composer, playwright, publisher, or distributor to exclusive publication, production, sale or distribution of a literary, musical, dramatic or artistic work. The penalty under Section 12 of the Copyright Act 1999 is an imprisonment term of up to 12 months and a fine of $5000 for every infringing copy. Repeat offenders could face a fine of up to $100,000 or face an imprisonment term of up to two years.

In the next nine months, the RBF and National Financial Inclusion Taskforce will be working on the development of a new Financial This was announced by RBF Governor Barry Whiteside at the opening of the two-day 12th Pacific Islands Working Group. He said the Bank and Taskforce would be taking stock of all financial inclusion initiatives undertaken in the country to date, for this strategy, which will run from 2015-2020. Prior to the announcement, Mr Whiteside urged participants to work towards a National Demand Survey in their respective countries. This is part of efforts to determine

factors behind the low uptake of certain financial products and services, such as mobile financial services. Mr Whiteside also suggested a financial inclusion monitoring frameworkbased on international standards- that would look at access, usage and quality indicators. Financial access points are just the building blocks, he said. What is important is getting our people to understand and use these financial products and services. For example, even though remitting funds through mobile phones is perhaps the cheapest of the channels, we still see other alternative expensive mediums being used.

RFMF chief operations officer Lieutenant Colonel Amani Suliano said they would replace those who had completed their one-year tour of duty and were bound to start arriving in the country later this week. "Twenty-five soldiers have left in the first chalk a week ago and the second batch of 26 left on Thursday," Lt-Col Suliano said. "There have been three lifts this month, two scheduled for April and four for May and these will be all for Sinai. "Those who have completed their tour of duty have started returning this week and we have started farewelling those leaving for their one-year duty. More than 300 soldiers will leave our shores next week to continue with peacekeeping duties in Sinai. Lt-Col Suliano said they included soldiers from the regular and territorial forces.

There will be no room for cheats in the one-day September elections, says Fijian Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama. He said measures would be in place to ensure transparency and fairness and to prevent cheating. Speaking in talanoa sessions during his Lau tour last week, he said: I must stress that there will be no cheats and we will surely have a free and fair elections in September 2014. The one-day election provides no room for cheats. In the 2006 elections, European Union observers had reported some irregularities in their report. Under his leadership, the Prime Minister said, the Government had been championing transparency and fairness, and these would be the hallmark of the September elections. This election, he said, would be a truly democratic one and would be the first of its kind for Fiji. At talanoa sessions in Vanuavatu, Komo, Namuka-i-Lau, Ogea and Vatoa, the PM was asked about the September elections. In his response he first reminded the people that his visit was not political. But he confirmed he would form a political party and also contest the

elections. Voting, he said, would be for one day only. He said it had already been tested that a voter would take roughly one minute and 20 seconds on a voting machine to vote. He reminded voters to be very careful with where they placed their ticks. Some political parties had already announced how they would lead the country if elected. You must select a party that will take the nation forward and not backward, he said. Meanwhile, the office of the Electoral Commission will conduct a massive voter education exercise nationwide to get people up to par with the elections process. The Prime Minister said the Elections Office was preparing to go out to the people to clear doubts about the voting process. There will be a massive voter education on how to vote and how the system operates all throughout the nation, Bainimarama said. He urged the people to come out with whatever they were doubtful about for clarification regarding the elections. The September elections, according to him, will be Fijis first ever democratic elections for the nation. The Prime Minister said that during this massive voter education exercise eligible voters would be encouraged to vote as voting was not compulsory.

This kind of case is on the rise so I have no other option but to send you to jail, Magistrate Lakshman said. You cant think of your family now. You are the one who wants to go to prison. Tikotani was sentenced to eight months in prison for each count to be served concurrently with the five weeks already been spent in remand.

Fijian Man Gets Queen's Award For Bravery

Attracting and retaining the best international talent to fill skills shortages in key occupations is critical to Canadas economic success.
- Hon. Jason Kenney, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Employment and Social Development

A Fijian man serving in the British Army has been awarded a Queen's Commendation for Bravery for his action after a roadside bomb exploded. The British Army website reported that Sgt Saiasi Nuku Vono, 36, of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 Scots) went to the aid of nine colleagues caught in the fatal roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan. He was on his way back to base after a patrol in the Nahr-e-Saraj district of Helmand, when an improvised explosive device (IED) was triggered. The struck vehicle was behind Sgt Vono's vehicle and the blast caused serious injuries to all nine of the soldiers it was carrying. Three of them were later confirmed as killed in action. Sgt Vono immediately assessed that there were multiple casualties and that urgent life-saving medical treatment was needed. All communications with the Mastiff were lost and Sgt Vono had to react quickly while remaining alert to the threat of further explosions and small arms fire attacks, a known insurgent tactic. He directed other soldiers to cover him as he led them down to what remained of the vehicle. He climbed onto its roof, exposing

himself to small arms fire, in order to see inside before jumping down on to uncleared ground to gain access to the back doors. He applied a tourniquet to the section commander's leg and then co-ordinated the removal of all nine casualties from the vehicle. Having run out of stretchers, Sgt Vono carried one of the casualties across more than 100m of uncleared ground. Once all the casualties had been taken away from the scene, he exposed himself to further danger of attack when he led a team back to the vehicle to get equipment. His citation said he had shown "inspirational leadership" following the explosion in Helmand Province. His award citation states: "In an incident of extreme pressure and chaos, Sgt Vono's gallant act demonstrated the highest standards of leadership, calmness and selfless commitment." It continues: "His personal example, leadership and loyalty to his men exemplify the very best traditions of a senior non-commissioned officer in the British Army and for his actions he should be nationally recognised." Sgt Vono was one of 117 people named in the Operational Honours and Awards list.

Kidney Centre, Lab Brings Joy

Kidney Foundation of Fiji reached a milestone after opening its first Kidney Foundation Outpatient Centre and Diagnostic Laboratory. Kidney Foundation founding chairman Dewan Chand Maharaj said they accomplished their goal after years of discussions. The idea of a Kidney Dialysis Centre was first discussed in 2003, he said. We never dreamed that we would come this far; the centre will make it easier for ongoing dialysis patients to be reviewed and examined regularly. Mr Chand said the centre and laboratory would not have been possible without the help of the Government of India. The dialysis clinic has been in operation for the past six years.

Fijis Non Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Chile, Cama Tuiloma attended the inauguration ceremony of Ms Michelle Bachelet as the President of Chile upon the invitation of the Government of Chile. The ceremony was held on March 10-11 in Santiago. Ms Bachelet was elected after winning 62 per cent of votes in the December 2013 presidential election. She is the first female president of Chile and she served from 2006-2010. In 2010, Bachelet became the founding Executive Director of the U.N. Women, a United Nations agency created to promote gender equality around the world. Ms Bachelet will serve for four years

and she cannot seek immediate reelection according to the Chilean Constitution. President Bachelet has big plans for the next four years: free education, reforming the tax-system and the constitution, and equal salaries for men and women are some of her major tasks and promises. Initially as part of the two-day programme invited guests were scheduled to have a one to one audience with the former president Mr Sebastian Piera Echenique and also with President Ms Bachelet. However, due to a huge number of turn out this was not possible and therefore each guest was only allowed a few seconds to meet with the former and the current president. In greeting President Piera, Ambassador Tuiloma congratulated His Excellency for his four years of outstanding leadership in Chile and the region and wished him well in his future undertakings. Ambassador Tuiloma met President Bachelet and congratulated Her Excellency on her Inauguration as President of Chile and conveyed the cordial greetings of the President, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, and extended the warm regards and well wishes of the Government and the People of the Republic of Fiji to the President and her Government and the People of the Republic of Chile. He added Fiji was honored to be represented in her country and stood

ready to deepen friendship and support and strengthen bilateral relations in different fields, and opening horizons for future sustainable development and taking advantage of the fact that both countries enjoyed strategic locations in the southern hemisphere and the vast Pacific Ocean. Ambassador Tuiloma extended an open invitation for Her Excellency to visit Fiji in the future. Fiji and Chile are negotiating a number of bilateral agreements and memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Fiji is optimistic these negotiations will be concluded soon and agreements and MOUs signed.

After trial, majority of the assessors found the accused guilty for the rape count whilst one assessor found him guilty for defilement. On the abortion case, the court heard that the victim had informed the accused that her menses was not going as usual, the accused tried to make her abort the baby. Justice Sudharshana De Silva also considered nature of the relationship the accused had with the victim and ordered a permanent Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) to be in place, with the victim as the protected person.

DIALYSIS treatment is still unaffordable to more than 80 per cent of Fijians who require it. A patient who requires dialysis treatment pays $200 each time he or she undergoes the treatment, which one is expected to undergo three times a week. This was revealed by Dr Joji Malani who said that although dialysis was much more expensive in other countries, it was still unaffordable here. "All patients require three sessions of hemodialysis weekly. However, this has not been regularly observed because of costs to the patient," Dr

Malani explained. "A large number have been on two sessions weekly and some on once weekly and this is not good for the patient. But it has a lot to do with the cost affordability to the patient." Dr Malani said abroad, governments helped dialysis patients through subsidies and Fiji had also strived to assist patients as best they could. "One dialysis session costs $200. In comparison, having dialysis in Australia or New Zealand can vary from $1200 to $1600 but in these countries, they are subsidised."

application for bail was denied. Judge Temo stressed to the two accused if they wanted to apply for bail, they would not have a chance as the $45,000 cash which was allegedly stolen by the two has not been recovered.

GOUNDAR Shipping has bought a $3million vessel to add to its existing fleet in the hope of improving maritime shipping services to the people of Fiji. Soon after arrival in Nadi on Monday, shipping owner George Goundar said the vessel would make its way to Fiji from Canada once the amended Maritime Transport Decree 2013 (MTD) comes into effect. He was in Canada for more than five weeks to seal the deal on the third vessel. Mr Goundar said the delay in the implementation of these new laws would directly affect his operations. "The Marine Act as promised by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) will be in place on May 5," Mr Goundar said. "But we have been informed that it will come into effect after the September elections." He says the move to purchase another vessel comes as the need for more prompt and increased services were required from the people living in the islands. However, he said the September decree was a long way and it would be difficult for them to bring in their new vessel any sooner. MSAF chief executive Neale Slack had earlier said there were several major changes to the decree which previously did not feature in the Marine Act of 1986. "One of the major areas of change in the Maritime Transport Decree (MTD) is that a large portion of it is about protection of the marine environment," Mr Slack said. "So a major change is that we have a requirement for the protection of the environment which has increased dramatically over the years." Mr Slack added there was also the addition of seven International Maritime Organisation conventions which would lift the standard of the industry.

Another Addition To The Fleet

"MSAF is mindful of the real challenges that exists with respect to the implementation of the conventionrelated obligations, which have now by virtue of the MTD, become national obligations. "As a result of the enormity of obligations and responsibilities now imposed by the MTD, MSAF is committed to ensure a practical and manageable approach is pursued." He said they were now working with vessel owners to encourage compliance with the new decrees. "The new vessel will service the people in the Western and Northern Division from Lautoka to Labasa. "This is a big investment and I want to provide the best services to the people of this country." Goundar Shipping has emerged as the country's biggest passenger-cargo inter-Island ferry operator. Two years ago, Lomaiviti Princess was brought from Canada. Two years on the Lomaiviti Princess II was brought in from Tahiti. Mr Goundar hopes the third vessel would stabilise services to the outer islands. He said the people in the outer islands could expect better, comfortable, more reliable and constant shipping services as more ships were added to their fleet. Mr Goundar said at the moment the business was going at a very slow rate. "We have issues in the manning especially when we sign contracts and our partners don't abide with it," he added. As a result they were faced with problems such as shortage of staff. In November last year MV Lomaiviti Princess sailed to Port Moresby where it was taken for dry-docking. Mr Goundar said Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu had a lot to offer the shipping industry. He said there was room in PNG for the expansion of Fiji's shipping business.

Rescue workers continue to search the rubble amid dwindling hopes of finding any more survivors among some 176 still missing from a devastating weekend mudslide in the United States that killed at least 14 people. About a dozen workers kept up the search overnight for as many as 176 people who have been reported missing since a rain-soaked hillside collapsed last Saturday morning, swallowing dozens of homes near Oso in Washington, Snohomish county executive John Lovick said. Compounding their sense of urgency was a fear of flooding as water levels rose behind a crude dam of mud and rubble that had been dumped into the north fork of the Stillaguamish River by the slide in an area along State Route 530, about 90 kilometres northeast of Seattle, in the pacific northwest state. Family members are grieving, trying to focus on finding missing loved ones or working through the process of rebuilding what was lost. Washington state governor Jay Inslee Authorities were hoping the number of people listed as missing would decline as they had perhaps been double-counted or had been slow to

alert family and officials about their whereabouts. The rescuers, using dogs, earth-moving equipment and aircraft, had failed to locate any more people in the rubble early on Tuesday (local time). "This is an extremely difficult and emotional time for the families and friends of those impacted by the Oso

mudslide," Washington state governor Jay Inslee said in a statement. "Family members are grieving, trying to focus on finding missing loved ones or working through the process of rebuilding what was lost." US president Barack Obama, who was in Europe on Monday for a meeting with world leaders, signed an

emergency declaration ordering US government assistance to supplement state and local relief efforts, the White House said. More than 100 properties were hit by the mudslide. A 22-week-old baby injured in the slide remained in critical condition at Harborview medical centre in Seattle after being taken there by helicopter along with his mother who also was hurt, the hospital said. A report filed to the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1999 highlighting "the potential for a large catastrophic failure" was one of many warnings issued about the area where the disaster occurred, the Seattle Times newspaper reported. The rescue effort after Saturday's mudslide has been fraught with treacherous conditions and stalled efforts. Quicksand-like conditions forced rescue workers to suspend their efforts at dusk on Sunday. Some workers, mired in mud up to their armpits, had to be dragged to safety. Search crew workers were forced again to briefly retreat on Monday from the western edge of the slide area after movement was detected along a 460-metre stretch of earth.

Afghan Toddler Abuzar Ahmad, Shot Five Times By Taliban, Regains Consciousness
AN AFGHAN toddler shot five times by Taliban militants in an attack at a Kabul hotel that killed his journalist father and the rest of his family has regained consciousness and asked for his mother, relatives said Monday, calling the survival of the nearly 2-year-old boy a miracle. Hundreds of colleagues, dignitaries and loved ones gathered, meanwhile, at a memorial service for Agence FrancePresse reporter Sardar Ahmad, his wife and their two other children, slain in last Fridays rampage at a restaurant in the Serena hotel. Nine people in all were shot at close range and killed in the attack, which was particularly shocking because the luxury hotel has long been considered one of the safest places in Kabul to stay. The dead included four foreigners and an Afghan businessman. The Ahmad familys youngest child, Abuzar, emerged from a coma on Sunday, and his condition was markedly improved, according to a cousin who provided pictures, including one showing a doctor leaning over the heavily bandaged child. Now hes completely in recovery mode, 25-year-old Turaj Rais said in a telephone interview. Abuzar gives me hope. We are looking forward to a bright future for him. Mr Rais, who was Sardar Ahmads nephew and lived with the family before he got married, said Abuzar had even reached out to grab his iPhone to play a video game, though he was unable to do so. He said a family meeting was planned to decide who would take guardianship of the boy. Ahmad and his wife, Humaira, had taken their three children - Nilofar, 6, Omar, 4, and Abuzar - to the Serena for a buffet dinner to celebrate the Persian new year. The hotel is popular with foreigners and well-to-do Afghans looking for respite from the broken streets and chaos outside. Authorities said the four gunmen, dressed in traditional Afghan tunics and loose trousers, were armed with small pistols that fit in the palms of their hands. Security forces killed them after a three-hour standoff. The Interior Ministry said the attackers hid the pistols and ammunition in the soles of their shoes, and security-video footage shows they were searched twice before walking through the lobby and entering the restaurant. Investigators have yet to explain how they got past the searches and a metal detector. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack through spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, who said it showed the Islamic militant movement can strike anywhere. But he denied

Miracle ... Abuzar Ahmad, 2, the only surviving child of AFP reporter Sardar Ahmad, who was killed with his family in an attack on a Kabul hotel, is showing signs of improvement in hospital the militants killed Ahmad and the children, blaming Afghan security forces and their Western allies. Investigators said the gunmen may have had inside help. The Afghan intelligence service said in a statement that one hotel worker who was well aware of the security measures of this hotel had quit his job and left the country a week before the attack. The National Directorate of Security also reiterated the governments assertion that a foreign spy agency was behind the attack. It did not specify the country, but Afghanistan routinely accuses Pakistan of sending militants across the border. The intelligence agency said that the attack involved sophisticated tactics ... of a totally new nature in Afghanistan, and that a number of hotel employees, including the one who quit, had contacts with regional intelligence agencies. Pakistan condemned the attack and denied any involvement, saying a Pakistani had been seriously hurt. It is highly disturbing that attempts are being made to somehow implicate Pakistan in this terrorist incident, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. We reject the insinuation.

Chicago Airport Train Derailment Injures 32 Rare Female Crocodile Suffocates During Mating At Dutch Zoo
A very rare and endangered female crocodile has died of suffocation in a Dutch zoo during attempted mating with a "dominant" male partner, the zoo says. "In the end she couldn't handle the dominant mating behaviour of the male gharial," Amsterdam's Artis zoo said in a statement about the false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii) crocodile, introduced in October as part of a breeding program. During mating, the male false gharial holds the female down with his mouth "to show his superiority", the zoo said, stressing that the female had "accepted this behaviour".

A Chicago metro train has derailed at O'Hare International Airport, injuring 32 people, officials say. Early on Monday the train came off the tracks, crossed a platform and travelled part way up an escalator at one of the busiest airports in the US. None of the reported injuries are serious. The president of the Chicago transit union told reporters the train operator was "extremely tired" and may have dozed off in the train's cab. And authorities have said the train was travelling too fast when it crashed.

"I heard a boom and when I got off the train, the train was all the way up the escalator," passenger Denise Adams told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. Fire officials told the Chicago Tribune that six people were in fair condition and 26 in good condition as they were transported to hospital. Investigators are said to be reviewing security footage and interviewing CTA employees to determine the cause of the derailment. They plan to interview the train driver, who remains in hospital.

"She eventually died of suffocation," the zoo said, with multiple bites all over her body, in particular around the neck. There are only an estimated 2,500 false gharials left in the world. The crocodile is native to Malaysia, southern Myanmar and Indonesia's Borneo, Java and Sumatra. For years the zoo had a male and female false gharial but they did not mate and so they introduced another female, who died. In the wild male false gharials can mate with multiple females. Only 10 zoos in Europe have a captive false gharial.

Egypt Death Sentences: United Nations Says Penalties For 529 Muslim Brotherhood Members Contravene International Law
The United Nations human rights office says an Egyptian court's decision to sentence 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood to death contravened international law, voicing concern for thousands of others facing the same charges. Rights campaigners and lawyers described Monday's ruling as the biggest mass death penalty handed out in Egypt's modern history. Islamist backers of ousted president Mohamed Morsi are facing a deadly crackdown launched by the militaryinstalled authorities since he was ousted in July, with hundreds of people killed and thousands arrested. The Muslim Brotherhood's leader and 682 others went on trial on Tuesday (local time) in the same court, on charges including murder. "The mass imposition of the death penalty after a trial rife with procedural irregularities is in breach of international human rights law," UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said at a news briefing in Geneva. "A mass trial of 529 people conducted over just two days cannot possibly have met even the most basic requirements for a fair trial," he said. Mr Colville said 398 of the defendants were tried in absentia, and the exact charges against each defendant were unclear as they were not read out in court and not all defendants had a lawyer. "It is particularly worrying that there are thousands of other defendants who have been detained since last July on similar charges," he said. Defence lawyers said that they did not have proper access to their clients and that the court did not consider evidence they had presented on their behalf, he said. Some boycotted the trial, complaining of irregularities. "We refrained from attending ... because the judge has violated criminal law procedures and did not allow the [lawyers] to present their defence," Adel Ali, a member of the defence team, told Reuters. European Union high representative Catherine Ashton also criticised the

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370: Relatives Of Passengers Expected In Perth

Hundreds of relatives of passengers from Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 are expected to arrive soon in Perth, in the hope that they can claim recovered bodies. After more than two weeks of speculation, Malaysian authorities have announced that the plane is presumed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean about 2,500 kilometres from the West Australian capital. The search has now turned into a recovery operation. The Federal Government has agreed to waive visa fees for the families of flight MH370 passengers should they choose to come to Australia. The Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the Government would continue to put resources into the search because victims' relatives deserve to know what happened. The plane was bound for Beijing and most of the 239 passengers onboard were Chinese. Sammy Yap, president of Perth's Chung Wah Association, WA's largest Chinese network, says the families will need emotional and logistical support. "For most of them, it might be the first time coming to Australia, to a foreign land, and not being able to speak the language and so on, so it makes it more difficult for them," he said. "The main thing is we speak the language, we understand their culture, we know what their needs are and we hope we can take care of this part for them. "Anyone who needs counselling or consoling, we do have a network of people who can help us do that." The Chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs, says he understands the desire of family members to come to Perth. "You can totally understand why some families would want to be near where the activity was, and I think our people will be focusing on doing the job," he said. 'Chinese tradition' to recover bodies Mr Yap says it is important in Chinese tradition for relatives to be able to recover the bodies of their loved ones. "I think in Chinese tradition, which some people are still practicing now, it's necessary," he said. "For example, in a situation where a member of the family died from drowning, but they can't find the body, they would go to the waterfront, throw a watermelon into the water, and call out their name and hope the body would resurface. "They would be hoping to recover the bodies and take them back to China or Malaysia, or wherever they come from, and be able to bury the bodies." Mr Yap says he does not know how many relatives are expected to come to Perth. "I've heard from a dozen to a thousand, so it is really speculation at this moment," he said. "I think if the bodies can be recovered, I'm sure a lot more will come." WA Premier Colin Barnett told Fairfax Radio he expected the number of Chinese relatives preparing to come to Perth to be in the hundreds. "We don't know the numbers, but we expect several hundred to come to Perth over the coming week," he said. "We as a State Government will certainly do all we can to make their visit as pleasant as it can be given the circumstances, we'll host them, look after them, do all they can."

A 26-year-old IT worker has been found strangled at home in what police say is a rare "honour killing" in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Police say her parents, who are in custody, have admitted to murdering their daughter after she married against their wishes. She wed another IT professional on February 21. But her parents thought her husband came from an unsuitable community, police say. "The parents have confessed to the crime. They strangled her with her chunri [scarf] by tying it to the bed post in their house,'' Gopinath Jatti, superintendent of Guntur police, told

the media. "When the pressure built up, the girl informed her parents that she was in love with her friend. She tried to convince them but they obviously weren't." The couple got married in Hyderabad and then her parents took them to Guntur with the promise of a traditional ceremony. "The murder got to be known when the friends of the bridegroom got suspicious and went to the woman's house," the superintendent added. The official added that so-called honour killings are rare in this part of India. Her parents have yet to make any public comment.

blizzard that could dump more than a foot of snow, bring wind gusts of more than 100 kilometres per hour and storm surges that could damage docks and coastal properties. Environment Canada forecaster Tracey Talbot said the storm started early Wednesday morning in southern Nova Scotia and bring whiteout conditions across the region through the day. Talbot said the possibility of damage is real because a storm surge will bring rising waters along the coastlines of Nova Scotia and northeastern New Brunswick in some cases 50 to 80 centimetres higher than normal, with strong waves driving the sea into shore. That is definitely something we have to keep an eye on, especially if it coincides with high tides, Talbot said Tuesday. Prince Edward Island is expected to see particularly powerful gusts, with winds expected to reach 110 km/hr. Gordon Hayward, the manager of winter operations for Halifax, said the storm will likely take the city over its $20 million annual budget for snow removal. Hayward said its not uncommon for snow removal crews to be out clearing the streets late in March, but he doesnt recall similar wind speeds this time of year. Getting up to 40 to 50 centimetres of snow would be very unusual, he said. If you dont have to be out there, stay off the road. Its not going to be fun, its not going to be pretty. Neera Ritcey, spokeswoman for Nova Scotia Power, said the utility is watching for a combination of heavy, wet snow and wind and is deploying repair crews around the province. A growing number of B.C. motorists are getting a nasty surprise after ignoring speeding tickets issued in Washington State because they don't think the long arm of Uncle Sam can reach them. Blaine city administrators say many Canadians are regularly appearing in court there to face criminal charges of driving while under license suspension that stem from unpaid traffic tickets. The typical case involves a B.C. motorist who gets caught speeding in Washington and ignores the ticket because they think they're immune to U.S. enforcement. But about three months after the ticket is issued if it's not paid or disputed state authorities declare that driver's B.C. licence suspended in Washington. The next time the driver crosses the border they're nabbed instantly by U.S. authorities for driving while suspended. Blaine deputy court administrator Raylene King said the courthouse there is seeing a "rash of Canadians" coming as a result. Wednesday's court docket in Blaine featured 11 arraignments of accused making first appearances, nine of them for driving while suspended. Blaine immigration lawyer Len Saunders says it's the same scene each Wednesday morning a courthouse jammed with Canadians arriving to face the music. "They get a speeding ticket and they blow it off thinking 'The Americans can't do anything because I'm a Canadian,'" said Saunders. "Wrong idea." The typical penalty there for driving while suspended is a $500 or $600 fine on top of the unpaid ticket, although the maximum is $1,000 and up to 90 days in jail. But that's not the biggest problem for many hapless B.C. drivers. Because driving while suspended is a criminal misdemeanor, the conviction means instant loss of the Nexus card that gives many B.C. shoppers speedy access over the border. "Canadians have no clue what problems they can get into at the border if they fail to pay a speeding ticket," Saunders said. "And it's becoming more and more common."

He ties the increase to the growing frenzy of Canadians coming to Blaine to use U.S. mail boxes and other e-commerce package shipping services who then discover local police tightly enforce the 20-mile-per-hour speed limit in town. Saunders doesn't defend criminal cases, but typically gets hired by Canadians desperate to reinstate Nexus passes. "That's what a lot of people are worried about having their Nexus cards gone." It's possible to avoid or appeal the Nexus loss, but Saunders said in many cases the card is gone for 10 years. Saunders said suspended drivers who come back to Blaine for court must make sure they don't drive themselves across the border or they'll be nailed for a second offence. There's no disputing that they were driving at the border because automated cameras photograph drivers as they roll up to the booths. Solo drivers busted at the border typically get towed back to Canadian soil because it's illegal for them to even drive that far. An even worse fate awaits those who ignore the court summons for driving while suspended and then try to cross the border again regardless of whether they're driver or passenger. "A warrant for their arrest gets issued," Blaine prosecutor Rajeev Majumdar said. "And then when they cross the border they actually get arrested and taken to jail." Saunders knows one B.C. woman who was handcuffed at the Highway 15 truck crossing and held overnight in Whatcom County jail on a four-yearold speeding ticket that had morphed into a driving-while-suspended charge. By the time the husband hired a U.S. lawyer and bailed his wife out of jail, the cost of dealing with what had been a $124 ticket had soared to $4,000. "He was furious, he couldn't believe it," Saunders said. "I'd be terrified if it was me," said King, who encourages Canadians to dispute a ticket they consider unjust. "Ignoring it isn't the correct option. It's going to come back to bite you."

The British Columbia government tabled legislation Wednesday that would see municipal politicians in the province run for election every four years instead of three. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said the two bills she introduced are a response to recommendations made in 2010 by a joint task force representing the provincial government and the Union of B.C. Municipalities. The four-year terms, which apply to municipalities as well as regional districts, park and school boards and the Islands Trust, would begin in 2018. The bill also sets elections in October rather than November. The proposed legislation also includes changes to campaign finance rules, such as requiring candidates to file disclosure statements within 90 days after an election. The current deadline is 120 days. Candidates would also have to disclose sponsorship information on all election ads, and third-party advertising sponsors must register and disclose their expenditures. "After much consultation with stakeholders, we are modernizing local government elections to maximize fairness, transparency and accountability," Oakes said in a news

release. "This is the most significant update to B.C.'s local elections process in 20 years." The next municipal election in B.C. is this November. The Union of B.C. Municipalities passed a resolution last year that supported four-year terms. Mayor Dean Fortin of Victoria has said the longer term is necessary because many municipal issues have become more complicated, so more time is required to plan and engage the community. Oakes said campaign expense limits were also discussed during consultations with local governments, and they will be introduced in time for the 2018 municipal election. New Democrat local-government critic Selina Robinson questions why campaign expense limits were not included in Wednesday's legislation, since concerns by Vancouver civic parties over skyrocketing campaign financing was what initially sparked suggestions of reform. "The kernel that started this whole thing is the piece that's missing, and I think that's disappointing," she said in a phone interview. Robinson said a cap on campaign spending would level the playing field for candidates across the province.

Catastrophic Earthquake: B.C. Not Prepared, Says Report

Auditor General Russ Jones says Emergency Management BC had not made progress in 17 years vulnerability and make informed decisions as to their own level of readiness." But Jones also said the public needs to take responsibility and prepare themselves for a major quake. "British Columbians need to take responsibility and prepare for a catastrophic earthquake to protect themselves and their families, says Jones. He said preparing for such an event is a shared responsibility and urged everyone to look at their own situation and ask themselves whether they are ready. Government accepts recommendations B.C. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton, who oversees emergency planning, said the government has accepted and will be taking immediate action on all nine of the recommendations. A tough report offers a great opportunity and this one in particular will help us continue to identify what work needs to be done to best prepare B.C. communities and families for a major earthquake," said Anton in statement released on Tuesday. We have accepted all nine of the auditor generals recommendations; however, ensuring British Columbia is prepared for an emergency cannot be achieved in isolation. Thats why, earlier this month, we announced a consultation that will invite all our partners to work together on seismic preparedness, as well as a public education campaign to help ensure more British Columbians are prepared if the big one hits. Report recommendations: The provincial government develop long-term goals for catastrophic earthquake preparedness, including the level of preparedness it expects EMBC to achieve in the next 5, 10 and 15 years. The provincial government ensures EMBC has the capacity necessary to address identified critical gaps and achieve governments expected level of preparedness. EMBC develop a strategic plan to meet the provinces long-term goals. The plan should clearly demonstrate how EMBC will evaluate the effectiveness of its activities against its goals. EMBC identify, rank and prioritize completion of its own key plans and procedures to ensure it meets its B.C.'s emergency management agency (EMBC) is not adequately prepared for a catastrophic earthquake, according to the province's auditor general Russ Jones. Jones also found that neither the provincial government or Emergency Management BC has made significant progress preparing for a destructive earthquake since the last report 17 years ago. "Successive governments have decided to allocate scarce public resources to meet more immediate pressing demands, rather than to adequately prepare the province for a catastrophic earthquake that may or may not occur," explains Jones. "EMBCs current operating budget for emergency activities is approximately the same as it was in 2006. In addition, EMBC staff is busy with daily emergencies such as floods and fires so catastrophic earthquake planning is done as a side-of-desk activity." Among the recommendations in the report, Jones said emergency officials need to "report publicly on the level of preparedness so British Columbians can understand the extent of their mandate to prepare and respond to a catastrophic earthquake. EMBC regularly review its earthquake program to identify significant gaps and risks to a co-ordinated and integrated response, and develop actions to address them. EMBC regularly review and evaluate its stakeholders emergency plans and procedures to assess stakeholder readiness and capacity. EMBC conduct regular catastrophic earthquake exercises with its stakeholders to ensure it can deliver an effective, comprehensive and integrated government-wide response to a catastrophic earthquake. EMBC measure the effectiveness of its public preparedness initiatives at regular intervals. EMBC report annually to British Columbians on the state of its catastrophic earthquake preparedness. The report should include an assessment of the overall state of earthquake preparedness, risks and capacity, and describe the plans and achievements of the Inter-Agency Emergency Preparedness Council (IEPC).

London Drugs Loses 'London' Trademark Fight To Menswear Line B.C. retailer was trying to monopolize the word 'London' Federal Court rules.
The western Canada retail chain London Drugs has lost its bid to stop a clothing company from using the word "London" in the name of its menswear line. The company claimed that customers might get confused between it and a clothing line called "Smith and Barnes London," which is marketed by International Clothiers. But a Federal Court judge ruled against the B.C. retail giant, which sells everything from Aspirin to coffee makers, and upheld an earlier decision by the Registrar of Trademarks that London Drugs was essentially trying to monopolize the word "London." The judge said customers were unlikely to mix up menswear with home appliances just because of the word London. Trisha Dore, an expert with Accupro Trademark Services, says ferocious

protection of brands can lead big companies into weird territory. "Large companies are companies that are strictly motivated by their brands, and that is their identity out there in the marketplace," says Dore. "They will have a tendency to maybe stretch the limits of what their registrations may entail." But Dore says the company does own a slew of related trademarks from London Home to London Gourmet giving them a lot of control over the word London nevertheless. "I think there's a misconception that regular words can't be monopolized," she notes. London Drugs has its head office in Richmond, B.C. and 78 stores in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The chain started out as a pharmacy on Main Street in Vancouver in 1945, according to the chain's website.

Understanding Blood Pressure

Effective Ways To Reduce Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure (BP) refers to the pressure of blood as it flows through your body's arteries.
But when there is an exertion to pass through the vessels, the body's blood pressure is raised. BP is measured by two numbers 120/80. The first number measures how effective your heart is at pumping blood around the arteries. The second measures how efficiently your heart relaxes between beats. Those who have blood pressure over 140/90 (or more), it increases their chances of different types of ailments like strokes, kidney failure and heart disease. Here's how you can lower the risks of high blood pressure... - Reducing alcohol consumption is the most important thing to do if you want to get your BP under control. Whether you drink alcohol regularly or go on a binge drinking spree, the damage is immense. Limit consumption. - Make sure your food is not very salty. Salt may add taste to your food but can also be detrimental to your blood pressure by causing fatty deposits to form in your arteries. Reduce salt in your diet and see the difference. - Whether you want to lose weight or stay in shape, exercising is a must. Follow an exercise routine and stick to it. It will improve flexibility, stamina and keep you healthy. - Increase your potassium intake because potassium helps balance the water in your body, besides controlling acidity. Potassium helps regulate blood flow through your arteries to feed muscles with oxygen. Foods like bananas, potatoes, cucumber, oranges, cabbage, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, and broccoli are rich with potassium. - If you're a smoker, you need to quit ASAP. Smoking is known for increasing BP because the tar and fumes damage blood cells and vessels. - Make sure your diet has a fair amount fruits and vegetables in it. These are rich in nutrients, essential minerals and vitamins.

Sitting All Day? Check Extra Fat On Your Buttocks

For all those couch potatoes or workaholics out there, forget belly fat as sitting for long hours does add extra fat on your buttocks too. In the sitting posture, fat cells in buttocks expand up to 50 percent, making the bottoms appear rounder and larger. This "cellular expansion" played a vital role in fat production. Researchers found that fat cells when exposed to sustained pressure while sitting accelerated growth of lipid droplets - molecules that carry fats. To prove their point, the researchers analysed the accumulation of fat cells in the body and found that nutrition only played a small role in keeping people slim. Expanding cells deform neighbouring cells, forcing them to differentiate and expand further. It's time to stand up and move around for a while!

Vitamin C Highly Effective in Fighting Cancer, Lowering Chemotherapy's Side-Effects

Providing high levels of vitamin C via intravenous infusion may help fight cancer better and reduce some of the severe side-effects associated with chemotherapy, a new study says. The anti-cancer abilities of vitamin C (Ascorbate, L-ascorbic acid) are wellknown. However, previous studies have shown that, orally taken vitamin C is of no use in fighting cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute in US, injections help deliver vitamin C directly into the blood, further helping improve its levels in the body than when taken orally. Treating cancer with high-dose of vitamin C has been prevalent from 1970's. Since, it has been widely used to treat various infections, fatigue and different types of cancers. In the study, a team of researchers from the University of Kansas in US conducted experiments on human ovarian cancer cells, mice and found that intravenous vitamin C was highly effective in killing the cancer cells, by backing chemotherapy and improving its effects, without causing any damage to normal tissues. "In cell tissue and animal models of cancer, we saw when you add IV vitamin C it seems to augment the killing effect of chemotherapy drugs on cancer cells," study co-author Dr. Jeanne Drisko, director of integrative medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, told Health Day. Drisko and colleagues re-confirmed their findings on 27 patients with advanced ovarian cancer. During the study, participants received between 75 and 105 grams of vitamin C, along with their chemotherapy. Results showed that the method helped patients tolerate chemotherapy better, at the same time improving their energy levels and helping manage certain discomforts like nausea, Los Angeles Times reported. "The combination of parenteral ascorbate with the conventional chemotherapeutic agents carboplatin and paclitaxel synergistically inhibited ovarian cancer in mouse models and reduced chemotherapy-associated toxicity in patients with ovarian cancer," the authors, wrote. Power of vitamin C in fighting cancer has been a topic of discussion from a long time. Two clinical studies in the past that looked at ability of oral vitamin C supplements in fighting cancer failed, adding to the bias. Drisko hoped that their findings will help eliminate the wrong notions and improve cancer treatments based on vitamin C. "There's been a bias since the late 1970s that vitamin C cancer treatment is worthless and a waste of time," Drisko, told Los Angeles Times, and added: "we're overcoming that old bias."

Researchers from the University of Melbourne have found a link between pancreatic cancer and diabetes. In the new study, clinicians worked with mathematicians to review data from 1973 to 2013 to conclude there was a time-dependent link between being diagnosed with diabetes and pancreatic cancer. Diabetes Linked To Pancreatic Cancer

the University of Melbourne said pancreatic cancer was often diagnosed when at an advanced, incurable stage. "This is an important paper that highlights for doctors and in patients with newly diagnosed diabetes without an obvious cause, a diagnosis of underlying pancreatic cancer should be considered," he said. "The study revealed the risk of pancreatic cancer was greatest after the diagnosis of diabetes but remained elevated long after the diagnosis. The presence of diabetes remains a modest risk factor for the development of a cancer later in life," he added.

Intense physical activity for even 20 minutes everyday can protect you against several illnesses, including flu, research has shown. The findings suggest that at least 100 cases of flu per 1,000 people could be prevented just by increasing the intensity of exercise. The researchers estimate that two-anda-half hours of vigorous exercise a week cuts the risk of flu-like illnesses by around 10 percent. The figures come from Flusurvey, the online flu study run by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine based on responses from 4,800 participants.

However, moderate exercise appears to have little effect on rates of flu-like illness; which means the intensity is all important, the researchers said. "We're really interested in the preliminary findings around fitness activity and flu-like illness, as exercise is something that everyone can do to reduce your chance of having flu," said Alma Adler of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. "We need to treat this result cautiously as these are preliminary findings. However, they are consistent with findings for other conditions and really show the health benefits of exercise."

Scientists have found that oats may help in warding off cancer, as there is growing evidence that it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiitch and anti-cancer properties. Scientists revealed that the type of phenolic compound avenanthramide found in oats can help in protecting the heart. Dr. Shengmin Sang of the Center for Excellence in Post-Harvest Technologies at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University said that though the data to support the importance of oat betaglucan remains, these studies reveal that the health benefit of eating oats may go beyond fiber. Sang added that they have discovered bioactive compounds in oats, which may provide additional cardioprotective benefits.

After Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan To Turn Item Girl For Akshay Kumar
Bebos upcoming movie list is soon depleting, guess thats why this Bollywoods once hot property is now turning to item songs
like desperate Kareena is willing to do item songs just to impress Bhansali and bag a plum role in his upcoming film. We cannot forget how Ms Kapoor Khan had said at a recent event, I am very keen to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali! And for Kareena who has been averse to the idea of item girls and songs, were sure that dearth of acting assignments means to shift to the next popular category of item songs, hai na? At least the oh-so-hot Bebo can flaunt her sexy moves and good looks here, unlike those boring book launch events, yaaaawn! Especially with Salman walking out of Gabbar special song, Kareena can finally take the centre stage with this song, right? While Kareena isnt the only heroine who is doing item songs, we know that Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif have sizzled in some super sexy gaanas. But, now that all these actors have their dates booked, we hope Kareena who is losing out on films to her competition can make Kareena Kapoor Khans once glorious innings in Bollywood is soon losing its sheen. The actress who was one of the busiest babes in the industry is spotted launching books and sipping green tea at promotional events, clearly showing that shes out of action. But guess what Bebo is still hot property at least as far as item songs are concerned. The actress who once took time off her packed schedule to shoot the sexy Fevicol song for Salman Khans Dabangg 2, will now use her free time to roll a groovy number for Akshay Kumars Gabbar. After doling a hot song for Sallu miyaan in Dabangg sequel, she will now groove with her Kambakkht Ishq hero. Interestingly Kareena will do this special song (item song), in a film produced by none other than Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Remember, KKK had missed out on SLBs Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, thanks to her changed relationship status. It seems moolah and remain in the limelight thanks to item songs.

Nanda, Yesteryear Bollywood Actress, Dies At 75

Veteran Bollywood actress Nanda, best known for her stellar performances in films like Hum Dono, Ittefaq and Gumnaam, passed away following a massive heart attack, family sources said. The 75-year-old actress died at her Andheri residence. It is shocking as she did not have any history of illness, a relative said. Born to Marathi film actor-director Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, Nanda began her silver screen career early as a child artist with Jaggu in the 50s. Her popularity as a child actress made her transition to major roles easier, and she literally grew up on film sets. But it was paternal uncle-filmmaker V Shantaram who gave Baby Nanda a big break by casting her in hit filmToofan Aur Diya in 1956. With the success of Toofan Aur Diya, Nanda did not look back and went on to establish herself in the Hindi film industry with hits like Jab Jab Phool Khile, Gumnaam, Teen Deviyan, The Train, Mandir, Angarey, Ram Laxman, Bandi, Ittefaq, Hum Dono, Prayashchit, Ahista Ahista, Prem Rog and Mazdoor among several others. She excelled most often as a supporting star but also found great acceptance and popularity as a lead heroine in later years. Her identification with the title role of Choti Bahen stuck in real life. She shared screen space with noted actors like Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Dev Anand, Waheeda Rehman, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra and Shashi Kapoor with whom she starred in eight films. Their pairing in Jab Jab Phool Khile was a huge success and inspired Raja Hindustani. It was for the first time that the actress played a westernised role. Nanda was nominated for Filmfare Award five times for her performance in Bhabhi (1957), Aanchal (1960), Ittefaq (1969), Ahista Ahista (1981) and Prem Rog (1982). She won Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Aanchal. After a small role in Manoj Kumars 1972 film Shor, Nanda reduced her work in films. Her other films such as Chhalia and Naya Nasha did not work. She made a brief return to acting in 1982 as a character actress where she played the onscreen mother of Padmini Kolhapure in Ahista Ahista, Mazdoor and Prem Rog. After that she retired from acting. Nandas last rites was performed at the Oshiwari crematorium.

Automotive
2014 Hyundai Veloster

Friday March 28, 2014

Hyundai's Veloster is a genre-bending risk that appears to be paying off. As a category killer of sports, the Veloster is at once a stylish sporty coupe, a stylish three-door hatchback with innovative packaging, and a model that can almost provide the driving experience of a sports car. And for the 2014 model year, the Veloster gets closer to the sports-car labelwith the new 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec, a leaner, stripped-down version of the Veloster Turbo that's configured for those who want a big step up in performance from the base model but could do without all the extra comfort and convenience features. Relative to the Veloster Turbo, the Turbo R-Spec gets a stiffer suspension, different steering tuning, and a B&M sport shifter. Sportier interior trim and special badging are part of the new model's presentation, and it's offered only in Marathon Blue, Sprint Gray (exclusive to the R-Spec), Elite White and Ultra Black The Veloster remains mostly unchanged otherwise; and that's a good thing. As a synthesis of different types of vehicles, it's daring when its competition isn't, and that starts with its grabby, sportshoe styling and arresting look that erupts from its unconventional fourdoor layout. There's a hatch in back, a driver-side door, and two smaller front-hinged doors on the passenger side. Only in the most generic way does it mimic some of the shapes of the Accent and Elantra that it borrows parts from. Altogether it's distinctive and energetic, with lots of disruptive lines and surfaces that never seems to

run out of ways to entertain owners and onlookers. Veloster is nearly as much of a trendsetter; it's put a V-neck on the Veloster's dash and tucked a big LCD locket in the middle avoiding the clutter, and reconciling sporty and functional. At the base level, the Veloster's 138-horsepower, 1.6-liter fourcylinder engine has been cribbed from the Veloster. On that model, it's teamed with a six-speed manual or a dualclutch automatic, and they're both good enough for us to say that you should leave it to personal preference. It's a little short on torque off the line, but its EPA highway fuel economy of 37 mpg highway is excellent, and we saw more than 30 mpg in an extended test. Go for the Veloster Turbo and it's a different story entirely; it packs a twin-

scroll turbocharger for 201 hp in all, a 195-lb-ft blast of torque on tap at low engine speeds, and a choice between six-speed manual and paddle-shifted automatic transmissions. good for 0-60 mph times of about 7.0 seconds or less, with just a slight crimp in gas-mileage numbers. To fit the Turbo's greater power, these models get stronger brakes and stickier tireswhich helps improve the Veloster's handling in general. We're not wild about the electric power steering; it's low on feedback, and weighty when it doesn't need to be, but it doesn't disrupt the Veloster's generally flat, crisp cornering, which gets unsettled only if it's pitched over bad sections of pavement. The Veloster is quite spacious up front for two, even with the available sunroof

or panoramic roof. As for the back seat and that catchy side door, they're more playful than practical. Anyone greater than child-size is going to find it tight back there. The Veloster just isn't meant to be a four-person commuter; think of it instead as a versatile two-door hatch, with rear seats that fold down easily to create a very useful cargo area. And there are plenty of bins, cubbies, and nooks for stowing away smaller items. At a base price of well under $19k, the 2014 Veloster stands out for its generous list of standard features for the money. Audio features on all Velosters include a USB/iPod interface, RCA inputs, Bluetooth hands-free, and GraceNote music display technology that allows you to request music with voice commands. Upgrades on the Turbo model, which starts around $23k, include leather seats, big wheels and tires, a rearview camera, and more. Options include a huge panoramic sunroof, a navigation system, upgraded wheels, and a 115volt outlet. Automatic climate control is newly optional in the Turbo for 2014, and daytime running lights are a standard feature across the model line. And as part of the Blue Link suite of services, the Hyundai Assurance Connected Care service is included for three years regardless of the level of subscription. If you opt for the edgy Turbo R-Spec, you'll do without some features. Pushbutton start and proximity key; the electroluminescent instrument cluster, side-mirror turn signals, and leather heated seats are among the many items deleted in this focused performance model.

Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson has seen his fair share of strange injuries over the years, and Nigel Reo-Coker's bizarre mishap is just another one to add to the list. Reo-Coker is expected to miss the Major League Soccer club's game this weekend against the Houston Dynamo with a concussion after he tripped over a bike rack and banged his head in Vancouver on Sunday. The 29-year-old midfielder missed Tuesday's training session and was absent again on Wednesday, with Robinson revealing that Reo-Coker will likely sit out against the Dynamo. "He's a little bit bruised and cut," said Robinson. "He's not here with us today but we hope he makes a speedy recovery and hopefully (is) back very soon." A former Welsh international during his playing days, Robinson said ReoCoker's tumble ranks among some of the more odd injuries he's come across. "I've seen a few and heard a few in my time, picking up a remote control and pulling your hamstring and things like that. It's one of them that fits into that category," said Robinson. "It's quite a

serious injury for him but it's one that makes you chuckle when you hear about it and the story. It's a strange one." The injury occurred after Reo-Coker had returned with his teammates to Vancouver following the Whitecaps'

0-0 road draw against the New England Revolution on Saturday afternoon. "He just fell and tripped. I don't think he was looking where he was going, which is never a good sign for a midfield player," Robinson deadpanned, before adding: "Obviously you've got to be

very careful with head injuries these days. "He's done the concussion test and there was a slight issue so it was a little bit worrisome but he's fine. I spoke to him for half an hour today in the office. It's normal Nige back." Reo-Coker has started all three games for Vancouver (1-0-2) so far this season, but was subbed off after 70 minutes on Saturday in favour of Gershon Koffie, who seems like the most obvious candidate to take the Englishman's place in the lineup against Houston (20-0) this Saturday. A box-to-box central midfielder, ReoCoker joined the Whitecaps in February 2013 after stops with Wimbledon, Aston Villa, Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United in his home country. He started 31 MLS games for Vancouver last season, collecting one goal and four assists. Reo-Coker has one assist in 220 minutes of action so far in 2014. "You're always due for one or two strange injuries a season," said Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit. "You feel for Nigel. He'll have to answer you to how it all happened."

FIFA Approves Fiji FA Funding

Timely funding for the Fiji Football Association has been approved under the FIFA Income generation programme. This initiative was launched by the FIFA Executive committee which gave the green light. From the funding the court as well as the accommodation facilities at the national football headquarters in Vatuwaqa will be further developed. The national football academy in Ba will house a commercial gym. Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel says developing the above mentioned facilities will enable the national body to generate income. Firstly I would like to thank FIFA for this generous assistance, Patel said. Using this funding we will be able to develop our court in Vatuwaqa with a new turf and lighting. This will then enable us to hold competitions and general public will be able to hire the courts. The accommodation facilities in Vatuwaqa will be furnished allowing Fiji FA to lease out the facility, he added. The addition at the national football academy in Ba is also set to gain from the funding. A gym will be built at the Ba academy which will assist the national teams in camp and it will also be available to the general public on a membership basis. The FIFA Goal project three which will see a new training turf at the national headquarters in Vatuwaqa is expected to open later this year.

The former owner of the Vancouver Canucks will have to testify live via video conferencing about the infamous on-ice attack from behind that ended the pro career of rookie hockey player Steve Moore a decade ago, an Ontario court decided on Monday. In his 23-page decision, Master Ronald Dash ruled John McCaw Jr. has relevant evidence to offer when Moores lawsuit gets to trial, slated to start in September.

Former Vancouver Canucks Owner Must Testify In Todd Bertuzzi-Steve Moore Case

(McCaw) was the person at the top of the organization and ultimately responsible for the actions of management and for either setting the corporate culture of the organization or delegating the responsibility to others, Dash wrote. Moore is suing Todd Bertuzzi, who delivered the horrific from-behind blow, and the NHLs Canucks for $38 million.

Markus Naslund Non-Committal On Canucks Rumours

Markus Naslund may be 7,000 kilometres from Vancouver, but he knows what's going on. "I feel for them," he said from Sweden, where he'd just finished watching his son play in a tournament. "I know the feeling when you're working hard and things are not going well. It's overwhelming. "I'm pulling for Vancouver." In the last 24 hours, we've been wondering if he might do more. Naslund resigned as general manager of the Swedish hockey club MoDo, leading to rumours he would join his former agent, Mike Gillis, in the front office. Gillis told Vancouver radio station The Team 1040 he would reach out to Naslund. But the former Canucks captain claims we are jumping to conclusions. "This has nothing to do with anything in North America," he said. "This is a decision made here a little over a month ago, that I was not going to sign another deal. I'm ready to do something different. "I can see why there is speculation. But there is nothing to the rumours." Would he be interested? If Gillis called, would he be interested? "I don't know at this point," he said. "I had a couple of inquiries a year ago or so, but it made no sense for me or us as a family. I'm going to take some time... and see what I'd like to do. I'm not ruling out anything. I didn't take the job with MoDo with the NHL in mind. That was to help out an organization that was in rough shape." Naslund wouldn't reveal which team (or teams) approached him -- except that Vancouver did not. Naslund is the Canucks' all-time leader in goals, with 346. He's third in points, fifth in games played and his number 19 was retired in 2010. He attended Pavel Bure's own ceremony earlier this season. He added he "wouldn't rule out" a lengthier return to North America, but again said not to read anything into that. "I want to stress: This is nothing I am pushing for. Last year, friends asked me about some other opportunities outside of hockey...the timing wasn't right there, either. I'm considering that too."
