STU D I O
Designed by Janice Teague, CKD, CBD, for a professional chef, this kitchen serves multiple purposes, including hosting cooking classes. Janice was challenged to design the space to include large counter work surfaces, a student observation center, and room for additional appliances all in a way that feels like a home, not a commercial, kitchen.
With spring on the horizon, home improvements are on the rise. But according to Gail and Jim Drury, owners of Drury Design in Glen Ellyn, clients are being more thoughtful than ever about the types of projects they pursue. The focus is much more on lifestyle and how a family lives in their home, explains Gail, who founded the eponymous design and construction business in the late 1980s. Clients may call on us for a kitchen renovation, but the conversation quickly evolves into enhancing their great room or creating a nearby mudroom, she explains.

Glen Ellyn, Illinois Designer: Janice Teague, CKD, CBD Project: Kitchen Remodel Solutions: This English Tudors original kitchen and dining room were too small for functional cooking and gracious entertaining. Designer Janice Teague, CKD, CBD, encountered several design challenges, including incorporating a permanent structural beam running between the kitchen and dining room, placing major appliances on relatively short perimeter walls and adding an island with efcient storage and seating for four without infringing on the dining area.

Location: Burr Ridge, Illinois Designer: Gail Drury, CMKBD Project: Kitchen Remodel Solutions: A 1970s-style kitchen, complete with laminate cabinets and counters, was out of place in this traditional Burr Ridge suburban home. Gail Drury, CMKBD, designed this kitchen for empty-nester homeowners who both love to cook and entertain. The project presented multiple design challenges, including enlarging a cramped kitchen to ow into a bright sunroom, making the space multi-cook friendly and designing a more timeless, traditional kitchen to complement the homes architecture and style.

What They Wanted: Though Matt and Amy Koenigs 13-yearold master bath was visually unappealing, that was not the worst of its problems: It was cold and drafty so much so that I often showered in the guest bath, recalls Amy, who wanted a cozier room that looked and felt like one of the spas she and Matt had visited in the past. How They Achieved It: Among the reasons the room was so cold was the lack of insulation, a vaulted ceiling and open glass shower. Radiant heat under the new natural slate oor warmed things up, as did an enclosed steam shower. Now, the room is so comfy, says Amy, that my kids wake up in the morning and come in and lay on the oor.
The look of the space also has the resort appeal the couple sought, thanks to teak decking on the ceiling. It gives it a natural, outdoorsy feel, says Amy, who had originally hoped to do teak cabinetry but found it too costly. Instead, the teak ceiling is balanced by walnut cabinets, which include storage cabinets on top of the vanities and alongside the steam shower. Amy and Matt worked with designer Brigitte Fabi and Drury Design to nalize the selections and make sure the many elements were complementary. The room includes a mix of different tile materials and stone, including honed limestone countertops; slate ooring and tub decking; pebble tiles in the shower and as an accent runner on the oor; stacked stone walls; porcelain shower tile; and glass accent tiles in the shower, in the niches surrounding the soaking tub, and outlining the mirrors. The nished result not only pleased the couple, but also won recognition from the National Kitchen and Bath Association as the winner of last years Before and After Bath Award.
