My name is Michael Erlewine and I will be your guide through this course on astrology.

As for my qualifications, I have been studying astrology for over 40 years, and during that time have worked as a teacher, rogrammer, author and counselor. !ou can read about my background elsewhere in this course, but right now let"s get down to it. Astrology is ancient, robably as old as when eo le first measured time. It is resent in some form in all countries and cultures, and always has been. In fact, the ma#ority of the world"s o ulation uses astrology at the day$to$day level, and not #ust for entertainment, as we do here in the %est. &efore we begin our study of astrology, it might be im ortant to clear away two o ular misconce tions about astrology. 'ne o ular misconce tion about astrology is that the lanets out there in the heavens cause events to ha en down here on the earth. (rofessional astrologers who I have known )and I have known many* do not hold with these theories of +celestial influence,, that lanets somehow make things ha en to us. Instead, modern astrologers see the heavens and the earth as one whole entity, inter enetrating, and sharing the same s ace and time, which in fact is the case. -hey do not see the various lanetary configurations as causing events to ha en here on earth, but rather see the earth )itself a lanet* and all the other lanets as interacting in the very same s ace, and as sharing whatever events are occurring. In other words, whatever events taking lace out there in the heavens are also ha ening down here on earth. .either is the cause of the other/ both are ha ening simultaneously. -he lanetary configurations are #ust grand signatures )like writing in the sky*, signs of events ha ening right here in our own lives. &oth are the roduct of the same moment, one acted out in the heavens above, the other here on the Earth below. In other words, there is only one grand + lay, or moment. -he great drama enacted in the sky above is also acted out )in e0act detail* here on Earth, and in the same moment. Another way to say this is that the Earth is art of the cosmos and shares in that cosmic moment. Astrologers tend to feel that all ma#or cosmic events )ecli ses, etc.* are interactive/ they re resent an activity also taking lace within our self and consciousness. Another misconce tion about astrology is that to be an astrologer, you have to somehow +believe, in astrology. Astrology is not a question of belief, any more than you believe in sychology. It is not a question of belief, but one of use. I often find astrology useful in my life as a way of understanding who I am and what my life is about, lain and sim le. I don"t +believe, in astrology. I use it when I find it useful, and leave it alone when I don"t 1#ust like any other tool. In summary, astrology is a study of heavenly cycles and cosmic events as they are reflected in our earthly environment and vice versa1a vast cosmic clock. Astrologers find the cosmic atterns revealed in the rhythmic motions of the lanets useful in shedding light on the seemingly helter$skelter quality of everyday life. Astrologers do study the skywriting in the heavens, but only to better live life here on Earth.

I would like to give you an idea of what you need coming into this course and what you can e0 ect to get out of it when you are done. As for requirements, there are none, other than your own interest in astrology. (revious knowledge of the sub#ect is not assumed and you can learn at your own ace. If course outlines are too confining, you are free to #um around and sam le whatever sections interest you. I have tried to make the sections short, and use illustrations as much as ossible1sometimes #ust because they are fun and look good. %e will start at the beginning, working with conce ts you already may be familiar with, such as 3un sign astrology, the signs, lanets, and so forth. 4rom there, we will learn the ma#or elements of modern astrology, which include lanets, signs, houses, as ects and many other areas. -hroughout this course, I try to offer you several a roaches, since we don"t all learn in the same way. !ou will be introduced to the conce ts, keywords, hrases and images that astrologers have studied by rote memory and used for centuries. 4or those of you who like the nuts$and$bolts a roach, I also offer lots of information about the astronomy that astrology is built u on. In addition, in most modules you have the o tion of learning a more in$de th a roach to astrology, one that e0 lains not only how and why these conce ts were created, but how to use them dynamically to develo your own keywords1to better understand how these conce ts work. Most im ortantly, we will study how to use astrology to inter ret our own chart and those of our family and friends. -his is the reason most of us study astrology in the first lace5 to better understand ourselves and our lives. And last but not least, I have done my best to include, where ossible, short sidebars on the esoteric meaning of astrology, the inner or hidden side of the sub#ect. 6earn to 7ead .atal 8harts Most of us study astrology because it offers us a view of our selves other than what we have reviously known. Astrology gives us a different ers ective, a second o inion as to who we are and why it is we are here. It also can hel us to ma0imi9e our talents and to take a direction in life that will be successful and fulfilling. -herefore, the first thing most of us want to do is to learn more about our natal chart, the ersonal astrological chart created for the moment, or day, we were born. As we study the various lanets, signs, houses and as ects )the basic building blocks of astrology*, we will learn how they are configured in our own birth chart, our articular astrological signature. 6earning about your own chart is erha s the best lace to begin. It is where most of us start out.

I will s end the bulk of this beginning course introducing you to the basic elements of your natal chart, showing you how to use them. E0amine !our 7elationshi s 'nce we have learned the basics of astrology and have some idea of what our chart is like )who we are, astrologically*, we will want to look at the charts of our family, friends, acquaintances, as well as those of celebrities, im ortant events in our lives, and so on. %hen we have satisfied our thirst to know something about ourselves through astrology, the ne0t thing most of us want to do is find out about our relationshi s, or lack thereof. If we are in a relationshi , our well$being de ends on our mate"s well$being, so what makes him or her tick is im ortant to us. I have been doing astrological readings for some 40 years now, and the most frequently asked question that comes u during a consultation is, +%hat about my artner;, 'r, if they don"t have a artner, they have a list of candidates to look at astrologically. At the very least, most eo le want some idea as to what kind of artner would be best for them. In this course, we will learn to e0amine relationshi s astrologically. <etermine 8areer Moves Almost as o ular as learning about relationshi s is learning about your career. 7egardless of how much or how little vocational training you have at this oint in your life, what are you best suited for; Most clients I have worked with want to be ut to some good use, to be utili9ed in the most satisfying and successful way ossible. 4inding our ath or road to success )making a living* is something each of us must do before we can turn our attention to anything else1relationshi s, marriage, children, etc. If the wolf is at our door, that fact kee s us from en#oying many of the other areas of our life. -herefore, finding a career, your articular way through life )how to be successful* is key. In this course, we will learn several methods to determine career otential. 6iving with Astrology As we shall see, astrology is not only a way to better understand who we are or what makes our neighbor tick, it is in itself a way to live life1a ath. In this course, we shall learn to become aware of the cycles of u s and downs we go through )and have always gone through* since the day we were born. 'ur life is filled with cycles, even if we have not learned to recogni9e them in the world around us. -he monthly solunar cycle of the hases of the Moon, the cycles of the various lanets and their as ects, the daily cycle of day and night, etc., are all astrological cycles that we can learn to be aware of and to ut to use.

>etting !our 4orecast +8oming events cast their shadows, is an ancient astrological slogan. 6ooking ahead is something astrology allows us to do. In this beginning course, we will learn to use various astrological forecasting methods, like the daily transits of the inner lanets, the monthly lunar cycle, solar cycles and the long$term cycle of the lanet 3aturn. %hether it is today, tomorrow, or the ne0t =0 years, astrology has something to show us worth considering. Astrology is erha s most used for e0amining our self and life through the natal chart, as a way to better understand who we are. &ut these same astrological rinci les that we find in our birth chart are not static. -hey can be used to look ahead as well as back at our birth chart. 'nce we understand our own ersonal chart, with its inclinations and disinclinations, we can scan ahead in time, looking for days and weeks when a similar astrological climate is available. %e can look forward to these astrological events, #ust like we now look forward to celebrating our birthday. A birthday is, of course, an astrological event. In this course, we will learn to use astrological forecasting tools to hel us ick the a ro riate days for different kinds of events. ?ow &est to @se -his 8ourse As you can see, this course is laid out in modules. Each module has different sections, and each section has different to ics. 'nce you select a section from a module, that section will be dis layed on a se arate age, with the te0t for the selected to ic running down the right$hand side of your screen. ?owever, the rest of the to ics in that section are still available to you, and are listed along the left$hand side of the screen. !ou can browse through all the to ics, looking for those that most interest you at the moment. Each to ic has an image or diagram to hel illustrate what is being resented. If a to ic does not warrant an image, you will get some image anyway1something fun to look at. -he 3tudy of 8ycles 4or now, we could define astrology as the study and ractice of the cycles we can find resent in our life. %e study astrology and cycles to get a better idea as to what is ha ening to us in our lives, and we ractice or ut to use what we have found through our study and understanding. It will do no harm to start with the dictionary definition of a cycle, although we will soon get much less formal. -he Oxford Universal Dictionary states5 +8ycle 5 A circle or orbit in the heavens. A recurrent eriod in a definite eriod of years. A eriod in which a certain round of events or henomena is com leted, recurring in the same order in equal succeeding eriods. A long, indefinite eriod, an age. A round, course or eriod through which anything runs to its com letion.,

-herefore, a cycle is something that ha ens in our life again and again, and always in roughly the same form or format. Each of us cycles through eriods of feeling good or normal and feeling bad and not$so$good. -his is a cycle none of us seem to be able to avoid. %e e0 erience all kinds of cycles all the time. -he first ste is to be aware of that fact. 8ycles are so im ortant to the study of astrology that understanding what the dictionary has to say about them is but a start, and quite abstract at that. %e must e0tend and dee en this understanding until we can see cycles not #ust as formal conce ts, but as they are ha ening to us right now, and at work around us in our day$to$day life. @nderstanding these cycles in our lives may come slowly at first, but they are not that difficult to see. It can take a little time to ick u on these ideas, and to actually reali9e them ha ening in life around us, but it is well worth the effort. %ithout becoming aware of the cycles in our life that we have always been e0 eriencing, and learning to recogni9e them as they occur, our understanding of cycles remains #ust an abstract idea1a bunch of words. 6et"s go over this again 6ife As 8ycles 'ur life is filled with cycles. -here are very short cycles, short cycles, long cycles, and very long cycles. All cycles re eat or return on themselves1ha en again. 3ome e0am les of convenient$si9ed cycles that we can understand and measure with our mind include the cycle of our breath, the cycle of the seasons, and the cycle of day and night. -he cycle of our heart beating is almost too small and fast for us to kee in mind. 3maller cycles yet include cellular cycles and, of course, atomic and sub$atomic cycles. -hese smaller cycles ha en so often or fast that they are a blur to our mind. -hey fall through or beneath our awareness and make u the ground of our consciousness. %hen we look for long cycles, the lanets rovide good e0am les. %e live through and e0 erience the two$year cycle of the lanet Mars, the 2:$year Au iter cycle, and even the =0$year 3aturn cycle. ?owever, many eo le don"t live through the B4$year @ranus cycle, much less the much longer cycles of .e tune and (luto. %hile it is ossible to gras the meaning or im ort of these longer$si9ed cycles with our mind, it can be very hard to bring home the meaning of these long cycles1to ractice them consciously on a day$to$day level. -hen there are cycles, like that of our 3un orbiting the >alactic 8enter, that take so many millions of years that, for our ur oses, these cycles assume the ro ortions of a straight line. -he ortion of these larger$si9ed circles or cycles that we can com rehend in our lifetime are so small as to a ear like a straight line. %e can"t even see the curve of the line, much less the return. -hus our awareness is bound on the one hand by the incessant hum of smaller cycles and the long$themed straight$lined cycles on the other. -his leaves us with our awareness of those cycles that we can recogni9e and a reciate. At this oint, it is im ortant for you to be beginning to understand that our entire life is cyclic. It is all cycles1nothing else. I will e0 lain.

-angle of 8ycles 4or now, let"s not even try to sort out the tangle of cycles in which we are embedded, and say +-his is the Mars cycle doing this, that is the Au iter cycle over there,, and so on. It is quite enough to become aware that our moods, ca abilities, attitudes, etc. come and go in a very regular manner. %e can wake u minutes, hours, days, months, or years later and remember that we have been here before, have been going through a atch #ust like this. %e may not have felt this good in years. -hese are cycles that we are seeing at these times, although they have been there all along. Many eo le have no awareness of the cycles they are going through each day or month. -hey may not even recogni9e that they don"t feel very good or that they feel s ectacular, so embedded in the tangle of life"s cycles are they. -hat is why the first ste is to develo an awareness of how you actually feel, and begin to be aware of the cycles in life. -he 3traighter the 6ine -his ne0t conce t is very difficult to gras and reali9e, but I am going to ut it out there anyway. !ou can always work on it. ?ere it is5 All e0istence )our very life* kee s going through the sum total of the endless re eating cycles of which it is com osed. It is even more direct than that, and I am going to get very abstract for a #ust a moment. 'ur very e0istence is only by virtue of our awareness of these cycles or circles. And now for the hard art5 Everything is )or continues to e0ist* only by returning, re eating and restating itself. -hat is, everything we know and can have any awareness of has to somehow ersist or e0ist long enough for us to e0 erience it. -he converse is also true.

-hat which does not re$instate or re eat itself )in other words, that from which we get no return* is not for us. In fact, that which does not return for us )come to our awareness* com rises the sum total of our ignorance. %e ignore it. It does not register. 'ur consciousness then, that which we are aware of, is made u of the endless returns or returning of cycles. <on"t anic. I am going to try to make this clear. -his is not an easy conce t to gras , but it is an essential one, and if you can get it, it will make your study of astrology much easier. 6et me re hrase5 'ur consciousness, in other words, that which we are now aware of, is made u of whatever lasts )holds together* long enough for us to see and e0 erience it. It ersists, and we erceive it. Every thing we can see lasts long enough to restate itself, and these endless re$statements or returns make u our conscious life, and only that. %hen we reach the + oint of no return, in any ro#ect, we abandon that direction. %hen something ceases to restate itself, to return on itself, it dro s from our awareness and is forgotten. Everything that +is, only +is, by having the strength to last and e0ist. If it loses that strength, it no longer ersists. Everything is only by returning. It is by the returns that we know anything. If we reach the oint of no return on any sub#ect, it is #ust that5 the oint where there is nothing coming back. It becomes like a straight line for us. -his conce t is difficult, so let"s dro it for now and take another a roach at the same material. 'ur entire life can be viewed as a rocess of investment and returns, giving and taking, and this rocess endlessly re eats itself and can be studied in the form of cycles.

-he ?ouses !ou"ve robably seen an astrological chart wheel, divided into 2: roughly equal ie$ sha ed sections, much like how we would cut u a i99a. -hese 2: sections are called the +Astrological ?ouses, or usually #ust the +houses., In each ie$sha ed house, we might find one or more the lanets or the 3un and the Moon. Aust as someone might tell you they have the 3un in Aries, so they might also say that they have the 3un in the 22th house. And these 2: houses have s ecific meanings, #ust as the 2: 9odiac signs do. -he hrase +?e"s a -aurus,, might #ust as easily be +?e"s a 3econd$?ouse 3un., %e will learn about what the houses mean, but first it will hel to know something about what houses are, and where they come from.

%hat Are ?ouses; 4irst of all, houses are art of your horosco e, your natal birth chart. 3im ly ut, the houses are a way to divide the s ace surrounding our birth lace into sections of s ace as seen from the lace on Earth where we were born, that is5 the s ace above us, the s ace below us, the s ace to the east of us, the s ace to the west of us, and so forth. %e divide the entire s ace into 2: sections, like segments of an orange. 'nce we have divided the s ace around us, we look to see in what house or section of the sky the various heavenly bodies can be found, like the 3un, Moon, and lanets, but also, the stars and any other astronomical body that might interest us. And since the lanets are lotted in the 9odiac signs, most house systems show where the articular house is )intersects* the band of the 9odiac.

-hree$<imensional And although our two$dimensional horosco e chart is flat, the sections of the houses are not. -hey are three$dimensional, like the sections of an orange. Aust imagine walking outside under the night sky, with the stars and lanets twinkling around you, and dividing u all that s ace above you and below you )on the other side of the earth* into 2: sections or segments. 4rom where you stand looking to the south would be the -enth ?ouse, behind you and to the north )and below you* would be the 4ourth ?ouse, at your left and to the east would be the 4irst ?ouse, to your right and to the west would be the 3eventh ?ouse, and so on. -hat is what astrological houses are like -wo$<imensional 8harts Although astrological houses are three dimensional in s ace, we tend to re resent them on the a er chart wheel as two dimensional F the wheel of the twelve houses. And each of the twelve house cus s has a articular 9odiac sign on its house +cus ., A house cus is #ust the beginning or starting oint )read5 edge* of each of the houses. 4or e0am le, the 9odiac sign on the edge or at the beginning of the 4irst ?ouse is also called the Ascendant or 7ising 3ign.

?ouse 8us s ?ouse cus s are determined by taking the three$dimensional house sections )remember the segments of an orange* and seeing where these lines intersect and cross the 9odiac. %here these lines intersect is the cus for each house, and that 9odiac sign is said to be the +sign on the house cus ., In the diagram above, you can see the house segments and you can see the ring of the 2: 9odiac signs. %here each segment cuts across the band of the 9odiac, that sign is the sign on the house cus . Although most house systems are divided into the familiar 2: houses, there are many different kinds of house systems, many slightly different ways of dividing u the s ace that surrounds us. Astrologers like to argue among themselves as to which house system is the best, and they agree to differ on this. E0 laining the differences between the house systems is much too com licated to #um into here, so it will have to be enough )for now* to know that, while there are different houses systems, they tend to agree on the main oints and are thus more the same than they are different. !ou can feel confident using any of the ma#or ones until you get so histicated enough to argue about the merits of one over another. 3o much for giving you an astronomical icture of what houses are. More im ortant is why the houses are im ortant. %hat do they mean;

20

%hy ?ouses Are Im ortant If we can say that the lanets tell us what general area of life we are working with, and that the signs of the 9odiac the lanets are in tell us something about the energy hase of that life area, then we could say that the houses tell us where all this activity is taking lace. 6et"s take a sim le e0am le5 I ha en to have the 3un in 8ancer in the Eighth ?ouse. %hat does this mean; 6et"s arse this out. -he 3un is the self, the self that each of us as ires to, and that we ho e to become, whatever we look u to as our future. -he 9odiac sign 8ancer says that this 3un can be very sensitive, that we are way down in there, and very much given to sensing things. %e all know that 8ancer 3un signs love their homes. And last, the Eighth ?ouse is the house of analysis )criticism*, breaking things down, finding the kernels, and throwing out the chaff1getting at the heart of things. -he Eighth ?ouse is also the house of occult and esoteric study. Am I any of these things; I am. I have always worked out of my home, even when I had a com any with DC0 em loyees. I stayed home as much as humanly ossible. As for sensitivity, my wife may have some other things to add, but I was sensitive enough to make my living as a musician for many years. As for being a critic, well, that"s where I shine. I founded and built the All$Music >uide )and other entertainment guides*, which today is the largest collection of music criticism on the lanet. And I love esoteric and occult sub#ects and have studied them all my life. I ho e to oint out some esoteric astrology rinci les through this course. -hat is #ust one inter retation. 'f course, there are many, many ways to inter ret the +3un in 8ancer in the Eighth ?ouse,, and that is what makes astrology so fascinating. 'nce you understand the basic rinci les, and get in touch with your own inner energy, you will come u with inter retations that are urely +you,, for astrology is an oracle. An oracle is something 22

that s eaks to us or through us. As we learn to become astrologers, we want to ersonally get out of the way and let the long tradition of astrology s eak through us. It is more fun to read what is there than to try make astrology s eak through our own ersonal bias.

Meaning of the ?ouses Each of the 2: houses has a different meaning, and describes or oints out a different area of our e0 erience. 'nce we learn something about what each of these arenas of e0 erience mean, we can begin reading astrological sentences like the one given above, +3un in 8ancer in the Eighth ?ouse., And best of all, the wheel of the 2: houses is a unified whole cycle )like the 9odiac signs, the hases of the Moon, etc.*, such that each house is a hase in that cycle leading to the ne0t. %hen you learn about cycles and cycles" hases, you are automatically learning about the houses. In this course, we have rovided different levels of inter retations for house inter retations. ?ere are a list of keywords and hrases for the 2: houses, loosely organi9ed into different themes. -hese may rove useful to hel you key in on what each house means

-he 4irst ?ouse has to do with you, #ust who you are, and how you a ear or come across to others1the im act you make on first meeting. It re resents the sum total of what you have managed to get together in your life u to now and are able to ut on the line for all to see. It is your com lete ackage. 3econd ?ouse Inter retation -he 3econd ?ouse has to do with money and ossessions, and also with how you ossess or +have, things1the way you acquire, measure, and love in life. It marks your ability )or lack thereof* to build on what you are given, and to embody your ideas and lans into something solid and real. It measures your rece tivity and ability to listen, take things in and use them. -hird ?ouse Inter retation -he -hird ?ouse is all about communications and communicating, how you reach out, e0 lore, and generally network with both eo le and things1your ability to make connections. All kinds of communication are indicated, whether written or s oken, by hone or by email, in rivate or in ublic. 4ourth ?ouse Inter retation -he 4ourth ?ouse is about the total kind of life e0 erience you will draw around you and how you feel about life, in articular when it comes to matters of home and family, your articular security blanket. 4ifth ?ouse Inter retation -he 4ifth ?ouse tells us about how we e0 ress ourselves, how we are creative. -his includes our awareness of what we have done and are roud of, all forms of creativity1 whatever we have managed to e0 ress and get out. Anything we have created, including children. Also, teaching and showing others what we have learned or are aware of. 3i0th ?ouse Inter retation -he 3i0th ?ouse is said to be the house of health and how we take care of our selves. &ut it is broader than that. -his house refers to how we care, not only for our own erson, but also how we care for others and things1anything that needs our care and attention. 3eventh ?ouse Inter retation -he 3eventh ?ouse is the where we get beyond #ust our ersonal concerns and take an interest in others, whether that be the ublic in general, or a s ecific erson that we bond with. -his is why this house has to do with artnershi s and res onding to someone other than #ust ourselves1res onsibility.

2E

Eighth ?ouse Inter retation -he Eighth ?ouse has been said to refer mainly to se0, but this is too narrow a definition. -his house has more to do with how we cut through the red ta e and get right down to the nitty$gritty, to where things are really at. ?ere is where we stri away the veneer and reach the bare facts. It has more to do with business and essential e0change than with se0uality. .inth ?ouse Inter retation -he .inth ?ouse refers to ideas and conce ts in life that are of the dee est im ortance to us, and that will endure. And so, this house often tells us something about the kind of s irituality or religion that suits us. In any case, this is where only the most essential arts of our life, what means the most to us, can be found. -enth ?ouse Inter retation -he -enth ?ouse has to do with our vocation or career, and marks the area in life where we may have a natural ability to see and manage. -his is where we have the natural vision to take control and manage things, ractically s eaking, our ability to be successful. Eleventh ?ouse Inter retation -he Eleventh ?ouse has been called the house of friends, and it is here that we find indications of our ability to work with others. It"s about our ca acity to share in a larger vision, that of a community or nation, and working for a cause greater than our own interests. -welfth ?ouse Inter retation -he -welfth ?ouse marks where we may be required to have atience and acce tance, erha s sacrificing our own ersonal needs in order to move forward a cause greater than our self. -his is where and how we find greater acce tance and the means to embrace fully what life resents to us. 3ign Inter retions %e have a number of sections on the inter retation of 2: 9odiac signs included in this course, so you can sho around for one that best suits you. ?ere are some straightforward, but brief, descri tions.
