This predictable book finds his protagonist, a newspap er managing editor, searching for his recently deceased brother's baby daughter by a Cambodian woman. So he and a crew of people who have attached themselves to him have to cross the Mekong River delta into Cambodia just as South Vietnam is falling to the NVA in 1975 and Cambodia succumbs to its Khmer Rouge nightmare. It moves fairly glacially through three-quarters of the book and then picks up s team. It's a small story played out on the stage of big historical events but Hi llerman doesn't really capture either successfully. It was a disappointment afte r being at least entertained by his Chee/Leaphorn works set in Navaho country. I think it was more or less a throwaway nod to his fellow Vietnam vets. Reading these will give you ast landscape of this area, and the characters are very for the bad guys, of course. Wonderfully written and original story. Like this review? yes Loading add a comment 79 Annette Feb 02, 2010 Annette rated it: 3 of 5 stars Read in February, 2010

What I particularly like intimate knowledge of th a good feeling for the v endearing. Well, except

I have always enjoyed Hillerman's novels which are usually set in the Navajo cou ntry of the Southwest. The setting for this novel is Viet Nam, Cambodia and the Philippines. It's just as entertaining as his others and you learn a little abou t the last few weeks of the Viet Nam War. It is interesting to see his style in so different a setting. I liked it. It reminded me of David Ball's departure from his normal style to write Chi na Run - another good read. Tony Hillerman is ever a good story teller, and this is an excellent story, but of course, not a part of his Navajo series. Since I can actually remember that time, this book brought back many memories fo r me. I ended up feeling that no matter how things look now, they just aren't as bad. Joanne Apr 07, 2009 Joanne rated it: 3 of 5 stars Read in April, 2009 A little different than Hillerman's usual characters, Indian police officers in the southwest. This one takes us to Viet Nam, Cambodia, and Laos in 1975, while the US is pulling out of Viet Nam. Sent to retrieve the child he didn't know his

brother had, our hero faces odds during a war-torn period. Pretty good. A man on a mission that takes him into foreign, dangerous territory that many remeber hearing and reading about in the late 1960 's. One you can't put down. It is a mystery about 2 brothers Ricky and Moon. Ricky died in a helicopter crash and left a baby for Moon's sick mother to retrieve. She is unab le to go and Moon has to do it for her. When he gets there, he gets involved in all kinds of unfinished business. It is an interesting book and a good read for Hillerman fans.
