Reveille!!Cadetstacomepouringoutofthe dormseagerforthedaytobegin!Todayisthe daythatcadetandseniorstaalikehave beenan cipa ngthearrivalofthebasicca dets!At12:00thecampwillbelledwith over60BDUcladyouthages12to18,each onebringingdieringlevelsofcondence andexperience.Inordertoprepareforthe daythestaspenttherstpartofthemorn inginPTuniforms,strengtheningbothmind andbodywithvariouscalisthenics.Running wasalsoontheagenda.

Cadetsbegantoarriveatcampatabout11:45.Sta,just nishinglunch,posi onedtohelpwiththeprocess.As parentssaidgoodbye,cadetssignedinandhadtheirlug gagechecked.Theywerethendividedintoightsandtak enouttothedrillpadtoprac cethebasicsthatmanyof themareonlysomewhatfamiliarwith.A ersomehard work,excellentinstruc on,andtonsofdetermina onthe newrecruitsweremarchinginstepwithoneanother,sa lu ngwhenappropriate,andstandingat perfecta en on.Duringtheeveningthecadetswere involvedinaTLPTeamLeadershipProject.Flights workedtogetheronaspecictasktogettoknoweach otherandtobuildcamaraderieasagroup.

Thecadetswokeearlyontheirrstfulldayof encampment.S llgroggy,theygathered quicklyformorningPT.Aseriesofexercises wasledbyC/CMSgtBarkley.Hercommanding voicegoteveryonesa en on!Forwardlunges,squatbenders,thehighjumper,and u erkickswerecalledinrapidsuccession. A eraquickshowerandahotmealthecadetswereloadedintovehiclesandtransportedtoFt.Campbell.WaterSurvivalTraining wouldbethehighlightoftheday!

Studyandtes ngarecri calcomponents ofthecadetcurriculum.Anencampment handbookisgiventoeachofthecadets thedaytheyarrive.Thestudentsareexpectedtohaveathoroughknowledgeof thecontentsofthismanual.Thecadets picturedaboveusetheir mewiselyby readingwhilewai ngtoenterthepool.

DressedintheBDUuniform,cadetsweretakentotheindoorswimmingarea.Theyformed4linesinthewaterand beganbylearningseveraldierentswimmingstrokes. A erevalua ngthecadetsability,thegroupwastaught howtousetheuniformasaoata ondevice.Buoyancyis achievedbyblowingintothetopoftheblouseandholdingthebo omagainstthebody.Similarly,thepantscan alsobeusedtokeepaoat.Tyingthelegsaroundtheneck andforcingairintothetopofthepantallowstheheadto stayabovewater.Trainingendedwhenashortsummer stormmadeitswaythroughthearea.Everyoneheaded backtocampforlunchandsomevaluableclassroominstruc on.

PTandreveillebeganday3ofencampment.Theca detsarenowge ngusedtothescheduleandmost wereupandaroundbeforerstcall.Studentswere treatedtosomeveryinteres ngclassesa erbreak fast.Oneclass,FitForFlying,centeredaroundtheuse ofprescrip onandnonprescrip ondrugsandalco holandhowtheyaectpilots.Mostdrugs,beforethey canbeusedbythegeneralpopula onaretestedfor sideeectsonpeopleduringnormal,dailyac vi es. Thesesamedrugs,however,arerarelyifevertestedin aightsitua on.Inanotherbuilding,1stLt.Blanton gaveanexcellentpresenta ononleadership.Using thegreatleadershipskillsofMar nLutherKingJr.and JohnF.Kennedyasexamples,thestudentslearned howtomodeltheirownleadershipstylesa erthese andothernotableindividuals.

Itwasawelcomebreakfromtheheatandanexperi encenoneofthemwillforget.Tomorrowtheywillro tateandenjoyanothernewexperience!
