Whats it like to work at Google? Whats your assessment of the companys work environment?

Google is the one of most popular companies in US to work in 2009. How do Google manage and motivate their employees to keep the company running successfully? t is !y giving the employees what they always e"pect . t would !e a dream come true if people are employed !y Google. #mployees will hardly feel stress and depressed. $any !enefits like health insurance% retirement !enefits and more was given for employees. &Google.com% undated.' (he company is designed to keep an eye on every employee and make sure they are healthy% whether physically% emotionally% financially or socially. &Google.com% undated.' )hat Google wants is for the !enefits to really have good effects for the employees. *or e"ample they have physicians% nurses and also convenient medical services for emergency cases. *urthermore% Googlers and their families can travel easily without any worries !ecause the company already cover them with travel insurance and emergency assistance for all kind of travels. Google have many young fresh graduates% so usually they are new parents% what Google wants to give them is that they will get time off and some e"tra spending money to help them en+oy and welcome their new !undle of +oy. n general% Google company is trying to give all the !est for its employees. So many !enefits have !een given and it will give employee pleasures so they do not have to struggle on thinking of unnecessary pro!lems while working. Google is doing a lot for its employees, but not enough to retain some talented employees. Using what youve learned from studying the various motivation theories, what does this situation tell you about employee motivation? *irstly the $aslow,s hierarchy of needs says that needs are in a system where it is arranged that contain lowest-level needs% which are psychological needs and the highest needs which are called the self actuali.ation needs. (he assumption of $aslow,s theory is that individuals are encouraged !ased on which hierarchy they are currently in. *or e"ample% a person is not motivated !y his or her social status or the amount of wages !ut his or her a!ility to protect themselves and the families. (hus% individuals have different levels of needs in each of these areas% and those levels will lead them to their !ehavior. $aslow,s application is that employees will not !e fully motivated unless their !asic needs are met. / very good e"ample is if employees are not allowed to !e recogni.ed !y giving out !etter performance and have !etter position in the company% employees will !e demorali.ed !ecause their need for esteem needs is not met0 thus% their work will not reach ma"imum potential. (hen there is this Her.!erg,s theory that asks the 1uestion% what can really motivate someone? Her.!erg developed a content theory known as the two-factor theory of motivation. (he two are called the dissatisfiers-satisfiers% or the hygiene motivators% or the e"trinsic-intrinsic factors. /ccording to the Her.!erg,s theory% hygiene factors descri!e the salary% work condition and company policies. $otivation factors are intrinsic% and satisfiers relate to motivation such as achievement rewards% more important responsi!ility and growth.

n sum% using $aslow,s model% we can conclude that employees work for money to fulfill their physiological and safety needs. #mployees want to !e part of a team and feel that they are a part of their unit2organi.ation. 3nce they have that feeling of !eing a part of the cohesive team% they are now asking for respect and recognition. #mployees will push themselves to e"cel at their work in some cases merely to receive compliments and get recognised. Some seek advancement to provide a sense of accomplishment. 4astly% self-actuali.ation and +o! satisfaction are o!tained where employees are no longer !ounded !y the usual conventions and can think out of the !o" and are a!le to focus on pro!lems that they are working on. $anagers must endeavor to satisfy the higher needs of esteem and self-actuali.ation through motivation while still providing and maintaining the physiological% safety and social needs of their employees. (o motivate employees is to provide them with motives% to give them reasons to act. (herefore% providing 5motivators, such as recognition% responsi!ility% empowerment% discretion and growth advancement is a great step towards their self-actuali.ation. If you were managing a team of Google employees, how would you keep them motivated? f were managing a team of Google employees% will keep them motivated them !y always giving them good rewards like a vacation trip% free 6 7 concert ticket passes and other privileges. (o make it even !etter for the employees% praise them pu!licly hence it will create a good competitive work environment for the others. 7raise employees in front of their coworkers. 8ot +ust that% think it is a must to provide traning regularly for the employees and make them always feel like they are at their !est. will make sure they can give their opinions on important decisions and pro!lems.
