APRIL 2014

It Only Takes A Minute

Meeting your needs At home...and At sea

In 1983 April was proclaimed as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. National Child Abuse Prevention Month is observed annually through child abuse and neglect awareness activities throughout the month of April. The Childrens Bureau (Department of Health and Human Services) Office on Child Abuse and Neglect coordinates Child Abuse Prevention Month (CAPM) activities. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Month of the Military Child. It is the optimal time to reflect on our commitment to support and strengthen military families while focusing on the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for children. This year's campaign theme is "It Only Takes a Minute". This theme reflects attention to the growing number of children who are neglected and/or abused as a result of technology abuse by their caregivers. The advent and rapid expansion of technology is forcing us to look more seriously at the use of video gaming, the internet, text-messaging and other developing media platforms that impact a parents ability to adequately care for their children. All members of the Navy Team, military and civilian are encouraged to participate in Child Abuse Prevention Month awareness programs and planned activities. Fleet and Family Support Centers Navy-wide will offer workshops and seminars designed to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect.
