For Immediate Release April 3, 2014 To the Student Association at Durham College & UOIT, We are writing you

today to bring to your attention to serious issues and dissatisfactions with the Student Associations operations, as voiced by the Business and IT Societys executive team and its sub-societies. Our subsocieties include the Accounting Association, DECA, Finance Society, Marketing Association, Human Resources Association, Networking and IT Security Students Society, Game Development Society, Investment Club, LANWar and the International Society. As representatives of 1929 students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Business and IT, these issues have hindered our societies from operating efficiently and bringing value to our students. Listed below are our issues: Communication problems o Slow email response from the Student Association executive team, if any o Reminders must be sent continuously for all issues o Policies are miscommunicated by executives o Executives are never in their offices o In general unorganized, incompetent, lack communication skills and unprofessional at all levels of the organization; elected executives are not qualified to handle their positions Financial problems o Inability to withdraw money into an external account results in society members picking up thousands of dollars in expenses o Inaccurate ledgers, if provided at all o Mishandling of deposits resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars o Billing errors o The SA has overstepped their power by controlling sponsorships and levy fees o 15% cap on fee savings increases financial risk for future years and hinders society growth Event issues o Event approval time is extremely long, often resulting in entire event changes, due to inadequate time o Forms are questioned when filled out in detail o Room bookings are impossible; event forms must be resubmitted for each denied request, resulting in the need to contact the university directly o Blackout periods for bookings are ridiculous, events are planned months in advance o Events cannot be held at Shagwells, while EPs has only one available day a week for pub nights o Wrong forms are often distributed o Tickets must be stored in the Tuck Shop with a sign out limit of only 25 at a time, as well as complimentary tickets unable to be given out o Food must be ordered through Aramark; many student associations run their own food service o Difficulty in booking tables for event promotions in the UA Atrium o Locations are approved and then changed without notice o Event are not setup to specifications as requested o Staff do not offer support during events; response is figure it out yourself Print shop issues o Accounts are charged in error o Quotes are not provided o Receipts/Invoices are not provided UOIT Business and IT Society UB4006, 2000 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, L1H 7K4

We hope to meet with the incoming executive team and board members to resolve these issues. If a resolution cannot be agreed upon, the Business and IT Society and its sub-societies will be forced to resort to extraordinary measures. Sincerely,
