Daniel A. Chapman 4/14/14 Fieldwork Seminar Video Analysis & Reflection (Video Link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jwsoxly c!"r#$m/%ml&'L(R&)/*A+,---!..

%$/m012 Context: The video that I chose to use for m anal sis and reflection was taken durin! m "th period #iolo! class on Thursda $ April %rd. As is displa ed in the video$ the period was or!ani&ed in such a wa that it !ave the students all 4' minutes of our period to dedicate to research for their ()enetic Disorders *esearch +ro,ect.- In this pro, ect$ the students were !iven the opportunit to select a !enetic disorder of their choice$ perform research on the disorder and take notes on a pre.formatted notes sheet$ and then take their research and or!ani&e it onto a /rochure or a poster similar to that of which the ma find in a doctors office or clinic. The students were also !iven the opportunit to choose individuall whether the would like to work in a pair or on their own. Whole Class Observations: I have /een ver e0cited to see how this particular class has reall latched onto this pro, ect. The students loved that the could choose their own disorder to stud $ in fact some went so far as to re1uestin! if the could choose a disorder that was not on the list I provided or that has affected someone close to them. This !ave the students a sense of ownership over their pro, ect. Additionall $ /ecause so man of these disorders are e0tremel prevalent in the communit 2i.e. Down s ndrome$ Al&heimer3s$ Dia/etes$ etc.4$ I think that the students could ver easil see the relevance of the assi!nment and the step into someone else5s shoes wasn5t too far out of reach. Student5s have /een takin! their research ver seriousl $ as is evident throu!hout this video. Students are workin! hard throu!hout the entire duration$ the amount of non.related chatter is at an all time low for this !roup of students. In fact$ there is onl two instances that I can see where the students are off task$ the onl last for around a minute$ and the same student is involved in /oth$ I should note that she is consistentl disruptive. I am e0cited to see how m students5 interest in the research portion of this pro,ect transfers over to their final product /rochures and posters. Specifically in regards to my Inquiry: The two students whom I chose to do m in1uir on$ Irene and Dante /oth decided to work with

a partner$ althou!h the fashion in which the worked was ver interestin! in relation to their learnin! st les inventories and what I have o/served in past classes/assi!nments. In the attached video ou can o/serve Irene workin! on her pro,ect 2sittin! in the front row$ directl in the center of the video4$ althou!h Dante and his partner re1uested to work in the computer la/ for this period 2I did have 6r. C !o down to check on them durin! the period$ and I had the two return at the end of the period to show me their pro!ress4. 7hat I found most interestin! in watchin! Irene here in this clip is that even thou!h she does have a partner$ she is not sittin! at the same ta/le as her$ and not once durin! the video do ou see the two turn to each other and work in a colla/orative manner 2askin! each other 1uestions$ sharin! and /uildin! off of each others notes$ workin! to!ether simultaneousl on their poster//rochure4. Irene usuall completes assi!nments on her own and usuall performs ver well on them$ and on her learnin! st les inventor she scored hi!hest on /oth intrapersonal and interpersonal learnin!. Althou!h her actions throu!h this activit ver clearl correlate to the sentiments that she shared re!ardin! individual/!roup work in the interview I completed with her ,ust da s prior8 Irene8 (For some people its /etter like that$ /ecause$ like sometimes theres some stuff that ou know that our partner pro/a/l doesn5t know$ and some stuff ou don5t know /ut like our partner does that the the can help ou with. So sometimes its /etter to work with two people so that ou don5t have to feel like ou !otta do ever thin!$ like on our own$ / ourself.6e8 (7hat wa s do ou think its not so !ood9Irene8 (Cause some people$ like if ou !ot like a la& partner ou !onna /e doin! all the work and the partner is !onna /e like$ oh let me see$ let me see: And then the 5re not even doin! an thin!$ and ou have to do ever thin! on our own: Its ,ust$ no help. 6e8 (So ou think it would /e /etter if ou were actuall a/le to do it to!ether9 Instead of ,ust like cop in! the answer...Irene8 ;ea$ instead of like$ (,ust cop this$ I5m !onna write the answer$ ou cop that.7hen I look at this interview alon!side what I o/served durin! the video and what I have seen in previous classes$ I see that I,ah can work ver well on her own$ and her approach to !roup/partner work is simpl an e0tension of that individual work. She is a/le to !et her own work done at a ver hi!h level< althou!h in this pro,ect specificall $ she was not !iven the correct scaffolds for colla/oration$ and she resorted to her natural approach to interpersonal work. That is$ she completed her work individuall $ and found a partner who would also do her share of the work. The did split the

work evenl $ and it wasn5t ,ust one person cop in! off of the other as she had spoke ne!ativel of$ althou!h the did not full (take advanta!e- of havin! a partner$ colla/orativel speakin!.
