Montage
February 15, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Peterson Description: An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography. Process: I cropped the background image to 8.511. I selected the picture of my saddle and added a mask. With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity, I blended the image into the background I added some type with two contrasting fonts and changed the font side for added contrast. I also played with colors to decide what looked best with the photos used. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Photoshop Message: I wanted to convey a love of the country. I also loved this quote, because to me it shows my love of the country and the way Ive been raised. Its the way you ride the train that counts, not necessarily where the trail is. Right now Im in Rexburg and not on the ranch, but I can still enjoy life based on the way I choose to ride.

Logos
February 21, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Peterson Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Process:This was really fun to learn how to use illustrator and get more familiar with it. One thing I enjoyed learning how to do, as tedious as it was, was learning to use the pen tool to outline the photo of the cow and then make it my own. I learned how to turn text into an object and manipulate it in any ways I wanted-to extend, shorten, or whatever else I wanted to try out. I also played with colors to represent the ranch, and am extremely happy with the ones I chose. The monochromatic grays of the top logo are neutral, fitting the feel of a ranch; and the brown and teal represent the two most common colors of dirt and grass. LEarning to use Adobe Illustrator was enjoyable and is a skill I will be using often in the future. Programs/Tools Used: Adobe Illustrator Message: Loveland Cattle produces quality beef. Audience: Everyone in the farm and ranch world/customers of the Loveland Cattle business Top Thing Learned: How to use the pen tool to outline a photo and make it my own. Color scheme: top logo: monochromatic; middle logo: Complimentary; bottom logo: Complementary and color names: top logo: black; middle logo: brown and teal bottom logo: brown and teal

Photodesign
February 7, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Peterson Description: Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created my plan by choosing a color scheme from the Visual FOCUS book for my layout, I decided on monochromatic and implemented all reds in my original photo. I wanted my quote to be about country life, so I used my table centerpiece that has raffia twine, and my mason jar which both are quite country. I was satisfied with my final picture! I learned how to use photoshop, as I edited the picture. On the left side of the centerpiece, I covered an outlet plug that was rather tacky, and made it blend with the counter. I also darkened the kitchen sink in the background. I learned how to create layers and maneuver my way through Photoshop; it is a seriously great program! Message: I wanted to make a cute quote about country life and love, just in time for Valentines Day. Audience: Anyone who lives the country life or would like to, and anyone who lovesor would like to! Also, the students and my teacher of COMM 130. Top Thing Learned: I learned how to pick a color scheme, and learned how to use Photoshop. Color scheme: Monochromatic; Red

Flier
January 21, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Peterson Description: Black & White promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference. Process: First, I created 4 different sketches of layout designs I could possibly use for this flier design. I used white space around the title and the large picture to catch the eye. I was given the image, logo, and content for the flier. I made my title large, kept my body copy small, and stuck with two fonts. Top 3 things I learned: 1. How to navigate the InDesign program 2. How to insert pictures into the right size of square 3. The importance of contrast Program/Tools used: Adobe InDesign

March 29, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Petersen Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):

Brochure

In class, I set up the layout so that it would fold where I wanted it when it was printed. I then began to work on the body copy. I decided the theme because I work at the lost and found on campus and we need people to come get their things! I then began to insert pictures and decided on the ones I wanted. I used photos from last semester and this semesters lost and found sale, which fit perfectly with the theme because this brochure is about the sale. I decided to make a fun logo for Ask BYU-I, because that is the office that oversees the lost and found. It is more playful than the original BYU-Idaho logo and I think that gave the brochure a more inviting feel to it. I learned how to do a text wrap on Photoshop with a picture of my lovely friend Kari. I then decided to use that skill again on the left side of the brochure. I loved playing with the shapes of pictures and leaning new shortcuts on InDesign. It was the program I was most unfamiliar with at first, and now my knowledge of the program has grown extensively. This was a fun project for me to work on! Programs/Tools Used: Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop Message: Encourage people to come to the lost and found before the semester is over and get their items before the sale! Audience: Students of BYU-Idaho who lose their items. (almost everyone) Top Thing Learned: I learned how to wrap text around an image in InDesign and take it over from Photoshop to InDesign. Also how to make a Logo in Illustrator and bring it over to InDesign. Color scheme and color names: Monochromatic, Blue

Web Page
March 15, 2014 COMM 130 Julie Petersen Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or written any HTML/CSS. It was interesting to use the http://www. W3.org HTML validator. It was useful to have something check to see if I had any problems with my code, because I fist I sure had a lot! After I marked up all my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. This was one of the most challenging parts of working with CSS. Programs/Tools Used: TextWrangler & Photoshop Message: That our family ranch, Loveland Cattle, produces quality beef. Audience: Anyone interested in ranches or cattle or interested in coding and logos Top Thing Learned: How to code Color scheme and color hex: Complimentary, Brown #603813, Aqua #13a89e
