Montage
Description: Date:
2/14/14 An inspiration and eye catching montage made of two or more images and use of typography.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

I browsed images. I cropped the sunset image to 11x 8.5. I placed the photo of the walking boy into the document and added a mask. With 100% opacity, I used the brush tool with black paint to softened the edges of the photo and covered the unwanted areas of the photo. Using opacities that very from 10%-30% I used the brush tool and black paint to blend the image the way I wanted. I added some type with contrasting fonts and added drop shadow and outer light to make the heading pop. I created a black layer beneath the images and used the black paint and the brush tool to create contrast between the boy and the image.

Logos
Description: Date:
Three varied logo designs for one person. 2/21/2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. Gather opinions from outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.

Process:

It was a great experience designing logos in Illustrator. For the first logo, I used varied typefaces to form my initials. I created a bird using the line tool and pen tool. On the second logo I created a pattern out of leaves and an additional pattern out of circles and layered the two of them as a fill for the big letter J. I spelled out my name below in lowercase letter with the second half being a different color to add separation between the first and last name. On the third logo, I made the first letters of my first and last name a totally different typeface and size to create contrast. I used the ellipse tool to create a perfect circle and used the same bird I created earlier hoping that it will become my signature bird.

Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Learn tools of Illustrator and InDesign. Create New Logo to fit image. Design Layout for Letter Head. Apply Typography Rules.

Process:

I created the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I used varying text size, typeface, and color to create some contrast and interest. I then pulled in a drawing of a feather which I used as a template to trace with the pen tool. Once the logo was created I placed the logo in an InDesign document. I then created the stationary by bringing over one of the black rectangles, shortened it, and placed it in the top right of the page. After adding the same information I created a watermark of the feather on the bottom left of the page.

Brochure
Description: Date:
3/29/14 Two sided color brochure presenting information.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Create Logo in Illustrator Set up and align a two sided, folding document. Incorperate quality images. Write original copy. Trim printed version.

Process:

I set up the offset brochure in indesign. After creating a mock-up sketch, I measured the distance from the edges to the folds and set up a two page document. I split the inside in two to show where the offset would begin so I could begin designing. I used long rectangles on both sides of the brochure to create repetition and unity. I specifically chose photos that show cased happy couples to encourage readers to use the tips given. I also chose photos that complemented my color scheme to create a more universal feel. For the image of the fire, I used the Photoshop quick select tool to select the fire and remove the background. I then used a refine mask to make the edges more professional and ascetically pleasing. I then placed the fire cut out into my indesign document where I used the text wrap option to make the text flow around the fire. I created the logo on Illustrator where I used the pen tool to trace a silhouette of a women. With the intent to convey that womens minds are always crazy busy, I decided to create a brain out of colorful squiggly lines on the profile view of the silhouette.

Flier
Description: Date:
1/25/14 Grayscale promotional flier for graduate leadership conference.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to create flier layout. Retrieve image and logo. Create a project folder to keep links intact.

Process:

I first created four possibilities for this design through sketches. Choosing the most promising one, I opened Adobe InDesign and began my work. I started with the mentality that the photo would be located at the top right and the gray box would be ascending to it to represent the progress of graduates. When the draft was completed, the flow seemed to be disrupted by the picture location so I began to improvise. I used the diagonal boxes for repetition and contrast in angles and color. The lines at the bottom right seem to keep your eye inside the flier so you can gather more information. The title is highlighted by the contrast between the white lettering and the darkest gray. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Office

Objectives:

Learn image sizing. Scan image. Choose apporpriate color scheme. Use Microsoft office to create a design.

Process:

I scanned the mountain road image from a magazine and then used Microsoft Office to create this design. I had multiple design ideas but ended up loving the organization of this one. With and analogous color scheme I was able to bring out the colors in the image. I added boxes for repetition and made the heading pop through a light yellow box. The rounded edges make the design look a lot more soft and inviting. I used two fonts to give the title a more decorative feel. Programs I used: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter).

Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangler

Objectives:

Size logo for web. Develop basic understanding of html and css. Design a web page. Identify hex colors.

Process:

I created this webpage using text wrangler. This was my first experience with HTML and CSS and it was very interesting to learn. It was mind blowing how many possibilities their are. The validator was also helpful in letting me know if my html and css were correctly formatted. After I marked up and created all my html, I attached an external CSS document to add style to the information. I used the colors from my logo to accent the page. I found the color codes by using the eyedropper in photoshop. I also changed my fonts, padding, and alignment of the title. I added a background image that I created in illustrator and changed the color of the blog link. It was fun finding new ways to manipulate my page.

PhotoDesign

2/8/14 Design a layout using an orignal and edited photo that displays proper color usage.

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 02 Caryn Esplin

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills. Choose color scheme. Perform basic adjustments in Photoshop. Use layers to design.

Process:

I first chose a color scheme from the Visual FOCUS book and took the image with this color scheme in mind. I decided on split complimentary. I used a borrowed Canon T3i to shoot this image. I wanted to pull in the gold specs in the scarf, the blue jacket, and the brick pillars. I brought the image into photoshop and applied the basic editing techniques of levels, selective color, sharpness, and vibrance. Then I designed a 8.5x 11 design that included my photo, repeating elements, and text. I incorporated my color scheme, color swatches, and color names in my design. I wanted to message to portray happiness and be analogous to sunlight. This scripture inspires me and I wanted to create a way for it to inspire others.
