During the 50s, a time of conformity and racial tension, Presley combined not only the the music styles of both races but brought the American Youth together with rebellious passions. This inspired a new generation to look beyond the racial boundaries and defy the conformity of previous generations. This best represents the virtue of resolution.

One of the 13 virtues:

Holden

The Catcher in the Rye

When I was all set to go, when I had my bags and all, I stood for a while next to the stairs and took a last look down that goddam corridor. I was sort of crying. I don't know why. I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it, and then I yelled at the top of my goddam voice, " Sleep tight, ya morons!" I'll bet I woke up every bastard on the whole floor. Then I got the hell out. Some stupid guy had thrown peanut shells all over the stairs, and I damn near broke my crazy neck. J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

Holdens defiant, rebellious attitude relates directly to the American frontiersman. He refuses to let anyone else pave a path for him, Holden follows his own rules, on his own time. Holdens adventurous nature was revealed as he wandered through New York City. Like many of the classic frontiersmen, Holden is unsatisfied by the world he lives in. Holdens audacity and rebellion allowed him to shatter his own emotional boundaries. Holden displays none of the 13 virtues. His irrational actions, indulgence of alcohol, deceit, and paranoia make him the iconic frontiersman. Holden goes against what society deems acceptable.

Kurt Cobain
Characteristics of Grunge: * Viscous guitar sounds with effects filled with distortion, chaos and fuzz *Lyrics filled with angst (often addressing themes such as social alienation, confinement, want for freedom, etc.) * Grunge musicians had resentment towards society and social prejudices *Different form of genre of the day - Authenticity

Id rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not The duty of the youth is to challenge corruption

Cobain: * Rebellious * Straightforward * Ruled by his emotions and was influenced by his moods of people around him * Represented a group of young individuals that were fearful of the future and resentful towards societys principles - He also reached out to them through his lyrics * His lyrics conveyed his take on different themes (as the desire for freedom, social alienation, confinement, etc.) - Since he found it difficult to say everything he feels in rational terms, he communicates through his music
