PRINCIPAL AMY PERRY LIBRARY MEDIA CENTER EVALUATION MARCH 12, 2014 MEDIA SPECIALIST & ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS

SUMMARY OF LIBRARY MEDIA PROGRAM EVALUATION

Recently the media specialist and I sat down and evaluated our schools library media program using the GLMA & GLA Library Media Program Self Evaluation Rubric. The evaluation is divided into five categories: Student Achievement and Instruction, Staffing, Facilities/Access/Resources, Administrative Support, and Staff Development. Even though our school is new, conducting this evaluation is very important in moving forward to better our media center programs. Below is the summary of our findings and a list of action steps that should be taken in the areas where we would like to be exemplary. In the area of Student Achievement and Instruction, we found our media center to be proficient integrating information literacy stills into the curriculum. Because teachers work closely with the media specialist in all content areas we are able to best serve students. We also spend ample time orientating students to Student Access (online tools used to review and track grades). Even though its hard to find time for planning, we have found ways to emphasize the importance of collaborating among similar content through using media services within the media center. We are rated exemplary for having a media center that reaches high expectations for the schools reading program. Our book collection and the amount of use our media center has meet the reading and language arts curriculum and recreational reading. We have all of the class sets of books needed to meet the curriculum standards. We also record requests for books from teachers and students. When creating our original collection we used Follet to help create the first list and have only improved on it since. In Category 3: Facilities, Access, and Resources, we found that our flexible schedule allows for teachers and students to use the media center before school, after school, during classes, and during lunch. We also provide the Peer Facilitator program that is run through the media center that allows students another option to serve our media center. When classes are signed up to come to the media center, students from other classes can still come in the media center. Students are always welcomed into the media center which makes for a comfortable work environment. Because our school utilizes ActiveSlates, iPads, Apple TV, projectors in every classroom, Broadcast systems, Video Furnace, laptops and more, we have rated our school as proficient in this area. An area that falls under this category that needs improvement is the use of GALILEO. Currently our students receive instructions during orientation on how to access GALILEO. They are given their password but we dont promote its use among students, faculty and staff the way we should.

We need to revisit this by having a professional development with teachers on how to maximize efficiently with using GALILEO. There is only one area in Category 4: Administrative Support where we didnt get exemplary and its in the area that relates to our media advisory committee. Though we do meet twice a year, we dont use the media advisory committee to develop media policy, budge development, acquisition of resources, and reconsideration of materials. This is something we should look further into, especially in the coming school year. Lastly, we rated our school as proficient for Category 5: Staff Development. We have an Instructional Technology coach who comes every other Wednesday. Thankfully she meets with our teachers to understand the type of professional development they need and prepares and delivers sessions based off of their needs at her next visit. This works well. She also plans for individual teachers needs and they communicate through email or separate individual meetings. Though our school is a very technology enriched school, that was built to be paperless, teachers still need a lot of help and support to reach our school wide technology goals. As part of todays report, weve come up with an action plan for moving one of the areas rated proficient to an exemplary rating. The area we selected pertains is under category 3: Facilities, Access, and Resources. The item is number ten and its exemplary status is defined below: Streaming video and other technologies are used on a regular basis to support the curriculum. The Library Media Center has a whiteboard and it is used on a regular basis. The school has several whiteboards located throughout the building and used on a frequent basis. Electronic distribution systems meet state requirements. Action Plan 1. Review the locations of the whiteboards in the building 2. Make sure staff members know when they are available 3. Conduct a school wide training on how to use the whiteboards 4. Observe and monitor use to ensure the devices are used 5. Ask three teachers to create lessons that other teachers can model 6. Have a professional development session on streaming video 7. Ask teachers to pair and share ideas on how they use video streaming in the classroom 8. Create an Edmodo group for the teachers that serves as an ongoing idea sharing portal
