ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader,

Massive On the Run Complex Application ReIused.
The On the Run Service Station complex with its 50
carparks, 12m, 9m & 5.9m high advertising pylons, eleven
Ience mounted poster boards, car wash, and drive through
Iast Iood outlet, which was planned to replace the existing
service station in historic Aldinga township, has been denied
by the Development Assessment Panel.
The development is completely inappropriate Ior the zone
and that is the basis on which the application was denied.
The proposed development provides no services we dont
already have, but actually duplicates and competes unIairly,
due to its convenient location, with some.
There is certainly a lack oI drive in Iacilities like this on
South Road south oI Hackham but the historic township zone
oI Aldinga is not the place to have it.
We are now waiting to see iI the developers appeal to the
ERD court.

Dover Street Reconstruction Plans released.
Council have released plans Ior the reconstruction oI Dover
Street to include a roundabout at the intersection with
Seaview. I notice there is still no plan Ior a turn leIt
deceleration lane oII Aldinga Beach Road however.

We are up to 48 pages again this month.

INFORMATION NIGHT
MC LAREN VALE OVAL, WEDNESDAY APRIL
9th 2014 at 7.00pm
Please come along and hear about the Relay For Life
in McLaren Vale!! We will be speaking to a group of
people who are wondering how this will work please
come and meet your new friends of Relay.

Relay For Life is an initiative oI the Cancer Council of
SA aimed at raising awareness Ior the Iight against
cancer. It is anticipated that the inaugural event Ior the
McLaren Vale and surrounding areas will be held 10
th

and 11
th
October 2014 at McLaren Vale Oval. Teams oI
10 to 15 people get together to raise money in the months
leading up to the event, then the team members take their
turn to relay around the track Ior 19 hours. You can run,
walk, stroll, hop, skip or crawl. This is a symbol that
cancer never rests. Relay For LiIe is run in 22 diIIerent
locations throughout South Australia each year. It is a
great way to engage people in the community, and
enables them to participate in a team building and have
Iun. Each event Iocuses on remembering those who have
been eIIected with cancer, and educating the community
as to how they can take simple measures to endeavour to
prevent cancer in their own liIe. Participants come with
their tents and place them around the oval prepared Ior an
overnight stay, with entertainment and activities
throughout. We would like to make this an outstanding
event to let people know what we can achieve as a
community.

Relay For LiIe is more than a Iundraiser, it is an
opportunity Ior the community to get together and
celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to
cancer and Iight back against a disease that has taken too
much, Irom too many.
With your help we would like to make a diIIerence in this
ongoing Iight against this disease. We are interested in
hearing Irom anyone who would like to become part oI
our organising committee to enable us to get this exciting
event started. We are also looking Ior Sponsors to come
on board Ior this Event, which will give advertising Irom
now until the Event with acknowledgement during the
time oI the Event. We will be holding several Iunctions to
raise money Ior this worthy cause where Sponsors will
also be acknowledged. We are also needing to get teams
registered so get your Iriends, Iamilies and workmates
together to make up a team to join in a Iamily Iun event.
ALL money raised goes to the Cancer Council oI SA to
assist with their ongoing support Ior Research, Education,
Accommodation Ior country and regional people
undergoing treatment and as well as many other support
services.

HISTORIC GATES.
Last month there was a snippet about the old gates
from the Adelaide Sheep Market being brought to
the Willunga Catholic Church.
This has now been verified. They were apparently
originally installed, after cleaning and repainting, at
the entrance to the cemetery. They have now been
shifted to the entrance to the new section of the
cemetery on the western side of the church.
Have you ever considered becoming a guide at the
Willunga Court House & Slate Museum.
We really need more volunteers to meet and greet our

Learn how to protect
your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise Ieaturing
more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and
460 bird species.
Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per
cent oI our native bushland has been lost in some areas and
with it, many plant, animal and bird species.
Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all
walks oI liIe the opportunity to help preserve what little we
have left by learning how to restore and protect our States
native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.
At the workshop, participants will learn:
- why the bush needs your help;
- the best strategies Ior restoring ecological processes;
- minimal disturbance techniques;
- how to work saIely in the bush;
how you can get involved as a Bush For LiIe volunteer
Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through
the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques
to get native plants regenerating and how to deIeat invasive
weeds. Bush For LiIe also holds advanced workshops which
cover topics such as native plant and grass identiIication,
advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and
more.
Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the
longer term. They can participate in small group activities
every now and then, adopt a bushland site oI their own or join
our Bush Action Team.
II you want to Iind out more about getting hands-on experience
through Bush For LiIe, phone the oIIice on 8406 0500.

Aldinga Beach C.F.S has a dedicated Rescue appliance.
This appliance is Iully equipped with rescue tools such as
heavy duty spreaders, rescue cutters that use a hydraulic
pump. These tools are used to cut a car to remove panels
so that we can extricate victims Irom vehicles that have
been involved in an accident. All oI our Rescue C.F.S
volunteers are extensively trained in the use oI these tools
and to stabilize vehicles.

Aldinga Beach C.F.S responds to Motor vehicle accidents

Accidents can range Irom a minor accident where all that is
required is to ensure Iuel/oil leaks are cleaned up to major
accidents where the use oI stabilisation is required and the
use oI the spreaders and cutters are required to enable
victims to be removed Irom the vehicle.
Aldinga Beach Rescue also has on board Medical oxygen

Is your body inflamed?
InIlammation is when things get swollen, red and painIul.
Inflammation is your bodys response to anything that irri-
tates it. We oIten think oI inIlammation as a result oI injury
due to sprains, insect bites etc, which produce the localised
pain, swelling, redness and heat. Although this is true, in-
Ilammation can also be a result oI poor diet, liIestyle, and
stress.
Where you find pain, you find inflammation
Many oI those aches and pains that you Ieel regularly may be
a sign oI inIlammation within your body. Almost all pain is
the result oI inIlammation arthritis, joint, back and muscle
problems, digestive disorders and many types oI headaches.
II there is pain, there is inIlammation.
Its not old age, its inflammation
You may not even be aware that you are inIlamed. You may
think that those aches and pains are a sign oI old age. The
good news is they may not be a sign oI old age; the bad news
is that this may be a sign your body may be inIlamed and this
inIlammation can lead to many chronic illnesses.
Food has the power to produce or reduce inflammation
One oI the most inIlammatory things many people are ex-
posed to is Iood in their diet. Fruit and vegetables, and good
Iats Irom Iish and nuts all help to reduce inIlammation,
whilst other Ioods can increase inIlammation.

Six simple steps to wellness
To help achieve wellness and reduce inIlammation there are
seven simple dietary targets you need to aim Ior.
1. Eat a protein rich Iood with each meal or snack.
2. Eat a minimum oI three cups oI vegetables daily
3. Keep reIined carbohydrates to a minimum
(eg: white bread, pasta, white rice).
4. Include nuts, seeds and healthy oils in your diet.
5. Avoid excess alcohol, sugar and salt.
6. Drink a minimum oI eight glasses oI water daily.
Managing inflammation through diet, lifestvle and natural
anti-inflammatorv supplements is so important to living a
happier, healthier life. .

Understanding Barking

Barking is a normal behaviour for dogs, but excessive
or unwanted barking can cause many problems. t is
the 2
nd
most common complaint received by councils,
and in some instances can lead to the destruction of
the animal.
When dealing with problem barking, the most important
thing to ask is whv the dog is barking; what is driving this
behaviour to occur?

Dogs learn by association, and iI the behaviour (barking) is
associated with a positive outcome Ior the dog, they will
repeat it. For example, when the postman delivers mail,
most dogs Ieel threatened by a stranger approaching their
boundary. They then bark to warn the stranger oII, and
when the postman moves on to the next house, the dog
associates the barking with the postman leaving. It learns
that this is how it must act in these situations in the Iuture
to get the same response. This learning is reinIorced every
time the postman comes by.

The above example highlights a dog reacting normally to
a situation. Other reasons are:
1. Excitement or arousal, e.g. during play.
2. Distress, e.g. new environments.
3. When they are startled or alarmed, e.g. strangers
approaching.
4. Boredom, e.g. leIt alone all day with no play toys or
chews.
While considered normal, this reaction can still be
problem behaviour to an owner. Often multiple
approaches are needed to change these behaviours,
including changing the environment, distracting the dog,
and positively reinforcing relaxed behaviour. Sometimes
the help oI a qualiIied dog trainer or veterinary
behaviourist may be necessary.

Dogs may also bark as an abnormal response to a
situation. This may be seen when a dog barks with no
obvious inciting cause, or iI barking is excessive. This may
occur due to:
1. Underlying medical conditions, e.g. arthritis pain, or
senility in old dogs.
2. Behavioural disorders, e.g. anxiety, obsessive
compulsive disorders, or Iear predispositions.

A health check should be the Iirst step Ior any dog with a
barking problem. Then veterinary advice can be sought to
help implement a management plan. II barking continues
despite this it is possible a behavioural disorder is the
cause, and a veterinary behaviourist will be required. II you
are having problems with a barking dog, please visit your
veterinarian. The sooner the problem is addressed, the
easier it will be to manage!

STEVE

When the chips are down

The Snapper Point Chicken Hawk (fish, chips and
pizzas) on Aldinga Esplanade was where Steve Shearer
battled in the late 90s and not just with his business
concerns.

Marriage collapses can be especially traumatic: perceived
injustices, childrens lives torn apart, heavy financial
losses, and the grieI and hopelessness oI it all when
expectation, work and eIIort come to nothing.

Although Steve had made a commitment oI his liIe to
Christ as a young adult, had been healed through prayer
Irom liIe-threatening chronic asthma and a serious back
injury, he had no answer to this crushing depression -
which lasted over eighteen months.

Having only the very basics oI his Iaith to cling to he
resisted the temptation to drop out oI church liIe. He
gradually Iound the critical support he needed Irom
Christian Iriends and slowly pulled through.

Steve recovered his purpose. He gives the credit to God Ior
restoring him Irom the ashes oI depression: Ior his lovely
Filipino wiIe Debbie who works at Aldinga LiIe Care, his
job with a local vineyard, Douglas Gully and his voluntary
work in the Philippines each year helping with building and
unemployment problems.

So whether the chips are down or youre ready to cash
them in, Steves advice is: Dont give up, look up! Let
Jesus see you through.
