Chimta Chimta literally means a fire tong shaped tool used in traditional Indian kitchens to fetch Rotis from

clay ovens and roasting pans. The musical version has brass jingles attached to the tong. It is mostly used in Punjabi folk songs and dances. Punjabi Shabad (an equivalent of hindi hajans! is traditionally accompanied "ith #himta. Ghatam $e%t only to &ridangam' Ghatam is also an indispensable percussion instrument in South Indian #lassical music. Kartal

Kartal is a pair of "ooden blocks "ith brass jingles. .ne block has a circular hole "here the thumbs fits' and the other has a larger opening for the remaining four fingers. These t"o are struck to produce a characteristic "ooden sound "ith metal overtones. /lthough it is seen being used in some folk music forms' *artal is traditionally used to accompany devotional music like hajan and *irtan. In $orth+east India' a form of &anjeera is kno"n as *artal' and is entirely different from the one e%plained above.

Manjeera Manjeera is a pair of cymbals tied together "ith a string. Traditionally made from brass' &anjeera has been used to accompany hajans and *irtans ever since the metal percussion instruments "ere created. / larger form of &anjeera is kno"n as 0hanjhar.

Andelu

Andelu are hollow, ring-shaped brass instruments that are important in the music and storytelling of the "Burra Katha" tradition. The hollow brass ring is filled with metal balls that rattle together and produce a metallic jingling sound. Andelu are typically between 1. and ! inches in diameter. Andelu are typically played in pairs -- a performer can put both andelu rings o"er the thumb of one hand and then stri#e both andelu with his other hand. Alternati"ely, he can place one andelu on the thumb and another andelu on a different finger of the same hand before stri#ing the two pieces of metal together.

Gol Kathi (Dancing Stick)

Nout

The nout is the northern $ndian e*ui"alent to the ghatam. +i#e the ghatam, the nout is a large clay pot. $t is used as a percussion instrument in the Kashmir area of $ndia.

Murchang

The murchang is a #ind of &ew,s harp which is traditionally used in south $ndian performances. $n a musical conte(t, the murchang is often played together with the ghatam and mridangam.
