Dear CUP Board of Directors,

My name is Alex Eastman, and I would like to join the CUP Board of Directors as the Western
Regional Director. I've had three years of experience in a leadership position at the Phoenix,
UBC Okanagan's Student Newspaper. My involvement with CUP as an organization has grown
drastically over the last year, and I believe I will be able to bring the voice of the Western
Region, as well as my own experience with student journalism to discussions surrounding the
future of the organization.

During this academic year's CUP plenary, a fee structure was passed in a 19-15 vote. The
Phoenix was one of those 15 papers opposed to the fee structure. I've spent some time
investigating the results, and though there wasn't a recorded vote, I can reliably conclude that
Over the Edge, the latest western newspaper to leave CUP, was also opposed to this fee
structure. In addition, other high-profile western papers are, as I understand it, teetering on the
edge of leaving themselves or already out of the organization, papers like the Peak and the
Ubyssey.

With that in mind, my purpose as Western Regional Director is clear: I am to advocate and listen
to our member newspapers, while also working to make sure that our board is making the kind of
decisions that will bring these papers back into our fold. Outreach to western papers out of the
organization is a major priority of mine, showing them how and why they ought to buy back in.

I speak frankly and bring a practical approach to theories and ideas on how to better CUP as an
organization. I will be capable of listening and giving an ear to all ideas, both from other papers
and on the Board of Directors itself.

I believe that at CUP we have a tremendous opportunity to define the organization, but that
opportunity will turn to catastrophe if we are not careful and intelligent about decisions that the
Board of Directors make.

I may be lacking in CUP experience, but I truly believe that my perspective is one that will
greatly aid the board, and that my experience with student journalism in general will be an asset.

I was also voted Awesome Bureau Chief, along with Ashleigh Brown and a stuffed penguin. I'm
not sure if that counts for anything.

Sincerely,

-Alex Eastman
