Greek Historical Influences

*ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING *

Grk Architecture
The columns shown are an example of Greek Architecture. Greek architecture consisted of porches, columns, and stone. In ancient Greece, there were many buildings built with these features such as the Parthenon. Greek architecture inspired many places today to accustom similar features. You see similar architecture today in homes, libraries, museums, government buildings, and schools. This picture shows columns in the front of my house, which is located at 6707 Debcoe Drive Austin, Texas 78749.

*SCIENCE AND PHILOSOPHY *

Grk Astronomy
This ornament has a night time scenery and a Christmas bear on it. The night sky has a full moon and stars all around the sky. The stars and planets helped the Greeks estimate the distances from earth to the sun and the moon. Today, Astronomy is everywhere. We see stars printed everywhere. This ornament is a great example of that. I found this ornament on the Thompson family living room Christmas Tree, which was purchased by my Parents a long time ago.

*ENTERTAINMENT *

Grk Sports
This ornament is an example of Ancient Greece sports, because the snow man is skiing and the Greeks were the first to come up with the Olympic games. The Olympic games have changed since ancient Greek times, but they have inspired branches off of the original games. That being said, this Snow man skiing relates to the sport of skiing, which is in the Winter Olympics. The original games have inspired the world to accept more and more sports each time. This ornament was found on the Thompson family living room Christmas tree, which was purchased from Target.

*MATHEMATICS *

Grk Mathematics
The five ornaments in the picture below are examples of Greek mathematics. This is because the Greek contributed the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. They also came up with basic Geometry, Euclids geometry textbook. These simple things are used today in every day life. Without the numbers 1-9 we could do nothing. We use numbers for time, counting, and everyday use. These ornaments were given to me on each Christmas until I was five. These were found on the Thompson family living room Christmas tree, and I have no idea where they were purchased. .

*GOVERNMENT & LAW *

GRK Government & Law


In the picture below, all of the Barbie ornaments voted for their President, Santa Claus. This is a example of Greek government and law, specifically Democracy. In ancient Greece, the most powerful governing system was democracy. Democracy means that the people vote for their leader, which can lead to conflict because the leader could have been elected based on popularity. This happens today with many things including things from school all the way to Presidential elections. The ornaments below were found on the Thompson family living room Christmas tree, and the Barbie ornaments were given to me, and the Santa was purchased from Target.

*HEALTH*

These flowers are an example of the Greek understanding of Plants and Animals. Plants and animals were very helpful to understand more about medicine. This carries on today because a lot of our medicines have been formed from plants or animals; such as vitamins, pain killers, and many more. This little plant was found in my bedroom at my home at 6707 Debcoe Drive Austin, Texas 78749, and it was purchased at Randalls.

Herbal Medicines &


This Orchid plant is an example of a type of plant that would have been gathered during the Muslim Empire, then produce Herbal medicines. Doctors would experiment with the different plants to create treatment for diseases. Herbal medicines are found all over the world today in items such as vitamins, teas, and medicines for migraines. Herbal medicine is also commonly found in sedatives that are used to kill pain during surgery or just in general. In my home we dont use our plants for medical purposes, but only to see the pretty flowers they produce. This Orchid was found in the Kitchen at my house on 6707 Debcoe Drive Austin, Texas 78749.

Zoology
This Polar Bear ornament is an example of the Islamic study of animals called Zoology. Zoology in the Islamic Empire meant the study of life styles dependent on animals. A zoologist named Al-Janiz, wrote several books about animals and he studied them for a living, this was the first time Zoology was public. Zoology is a very popular form of science that is studied today. Scientists who study Zoology, watch animal behavior and help to understand the species better. This Polar Bear was found on the Thompson Family living room Christmas tree, and was purchased at Nordstrom.

Irrigation Techniques
This sprinkler head is an example of Irrigation techniques that the Muslims would practice. They would utilize the underground wells and develope ingenious irrigation systems. Some of the inventions that were constructed throughout the Islamic empire consisted of dams, aqueducts, and reservoirs. The more modern version of the classical irrigation system, would be the sprinkler. Sprinklers are found all over the world in the front and back yards of homes, as well as in business lots, and fields. This sprinkler was found in the front yard of my house on 6707 Debcoe Drive Austin, Texas 78749.

*ENTERTAINMENT*

Polo
The little symbol on this Ralph Lauren Polo shirt represents a Polo player in the Muslim Empire. The Muslims over time adapted and improved the game, then introducing it to the Europeans, who then made it the popular sport that it is today. The game of Polo was elegant and played only by the wealthy. That being said, it inspired Ralph Lauren to create his Polo. The Polo player on the shirt infers that the person wearing it is elegant and classy. This shirt was found in my Dads closet at my home, and was purchased from Dillards.

*ARTS*

Calligraphy
The cursive writing on this Christmas ornament is an example of Calligraphy, which is a form of literature. Literature is in the art category. The Muslim Calligraphers made an art of this elegant hand writing, so much that they were honored above other artists. Calligraphy was the highest form of decoration. Different forms of calligraphy are found everywhere, on wedding invitations, cups, advertisements, and in this case a Christmas tree ornament. This ornament was found on the Thompson family living room Christmas tree, which was purchased from Target.

Geometric & Floral Design

The patterns and designs on the Christmas ornaments are examples of the geometric and floral designs. The use of the designs were introduced by the Muslim Empire, in which they would produce abstract art. The Muslims would use the designs on everything, such as small objects and walls. Thanks to the Muslims, design is now everywhere. The designs on these ornaments were found on The Thompson living room Christmas tree, which were purchased from Target.
