Subject: Writing Process and Writing Application Lesson: Writing a Friendly Letter (to the firefighters) Standards Write friendly letters or invitations that follow a simple letter format Generate writing ideas through discussions with others Use organizational strategies to plan writing Organize writing to include a beginning, middle, and end Construct complete sentences with subjects and verbs Print legibly, and space letters, words and sentences appropriately Spell high frequency words correctly Use end punctuation correctly, including question marks, exclamation points, and periods Use correct capitalization Students will know: The correct formation of a friendly letter Students will understand: A friendly letter has specific parts; date, heading, body, and closing A topic must be determined before writing the details Students will be able to: Compose a friendly letter using the correct form Construct complete sentences using nouns and verbs Use correct letter formation Promethian Board Student Journal Pencil Final copy letter paper Scrap paper (for brainstorming) Teacher will demonstrate writing a friendly letter on the Promethian Board. Students will remain at their seats. (10 min) Teacher will break students into groups based on their readiness levels. Students will move their seats to form their groups and take their Student Writing Journals with them. (2 min) Teacher will visit each group and give specific instructions. o High Group- Will brainstorm as a group and then write individual letters to the firemen. They will be given nonfiction books about firefighters that they will need to look through and include three interesting facts in their letter. o Average Group- Will brainstorm as a group and then write individual

letters to the firemen. o Low Group- Will brainstorm as a group. They will use scrap paper to write their ideas down and then together compose one letter. Students will be given time to work on their letters while the teacher visits the groups to assist (20 min) Students will return to their seats with their letters. Each group will come to the front of the class to share their writing with the whole group. (10 min) Once everyone has shared, students will copy their letters onto a final copy paper (students in the group who composed a letter together will all take turns writing sentences) The teacher will observe the students presentation of their letter to the class. The teacher will collect the final copy of the letter to assess. Students will be assessed on format, structure, and the standards listed above.
