Alderney Police

Alderney is a particularly peaceful part of the British Isles, with a crime rate the envy of more populous areas. Think of the TV series Heartbeat and thats policin in Alderney. !ike the "orkshire villa e force of the #$%&s, Alderney has kindly policemen, its fair share of community spirit and few ro ues, lovable or otherwise. However, the difference in the Alderney of the '#st (entury is that there is the need for a hi hly)trained and motivated modern police presence, and this is provided today by a resident police ser eant and two constables, with a third constable *on loan from across the water in +uernsey. Besides its small police contin ent, Alderney also has its own traffic wardens and ,pecial (onstables who act as +aoler, (ourt -fficer and Traffic (ontroller. -n the rare occasions it is necessary, reinforcements can be dispatched from +uernsey and more serious offenders are dealt with in +uernseys courts. Before overall responsibility for law enforcement in Alderney was taken over by +uernsey in #$.$, Alderney ran its own policin . It be an in the shape of an official called The /rev0t. 1rom the #$'&s the Island had one /olice ,er eant. 1ollowin the +erman -ccupation in #$.2 conditions were unsettled and, in #$.3, a pensioned (ity of !ondon /olice -fficer was appointed to the position who also acted as +aoler. At this sta e the only police transport available was a bicycle, or maybe a lift from a friendly motorist4 The ,er eants tenure was short)lived and an appeal for +uernsey to take over the Islands policin , resulted in the transfer of responsibilities to +uernsey in 5anuary #$.$. -ne of +uernseys first acts was to replace the bicycle with a police van. Today, the Alderney team has a !and 6over 7re istration number A" $$$8 and a (I9 vehicle. The head of Alderney Police has said he hopes to have a new policing plan for the island within the next few months. The plan will be based on the responses to crime islanders ave in a =>e?re !istenin = survey. , t +eoff Hill said that while there would not be e:tra resources, the new plan will make better use of those already available. There is still a week for Alderney residents to complete the survey and submit their views. , t Hill said he would not hesitate to act on the survey. =I?m not afraid to chan e thin s if I feel they?re necessary=, he said. =I don?t anticipate any widespread chan es at the moment, but I will react to what the survey tells us.=

Emergency Services
Alderney Police
The day)to)day policin of Alderney is provided by @ust four locally based officers, /olice , t 5ames /riest and (onstables Aalcolm Aessen er, 6ick 1latres and Andy 9u 1our . These officers are assisted by ,pecial (onstable /aul Aaurice and another constable attached from +uernsey on a weekly basis. Alderney /olice are mana ed by senior officers in +uernsey who make re ular visits to the Island in order to ensure a Buality policin service is available to local residents and visitors. 1ortunately crime rates within Alderney are relatively low compared to most other @urisdictions and throu h a community style of policin , officers seek to maintain that level of peace. >hen more serious incidents do occur Alderney /olice are able to call upon support from specialist officers from +uernsey. These officers can arrive in Alderney at very short notice. The /olice ,tation in Cueen DliEabeth II ,treet is currently under oin a ma@or refurbishment in order to make it suitable for modern day policin . -nce complete the /olice ,tation will provide a safe and accessible buildin for the benefit of officers and members of the public.

St John Alderney Ambulance Service


The ambulance service on the island is staffed by volunteers. Their trainin is to the ,t. 5ohn standard reBuired for accident and emer ency care attendance on ambulances. Be advised that there is a char e for the use of this service. /atients are transferred to the Ai not Aemorial Hospital and any havin ma@or problems are then transferred to +uernsey or possibly ,outhampton. The transfer to +uernsey is available throu h Auri ny Air ,ervices on a '.)hour emer ency basis. In the event of bad weather which prevents air evacuation then transfer is achieved with the aid of the 6F!I and the Trent class lifeboat on permanent station in Alderney. The ,t 5ohn Alderney Ambulance ,ervice is a private company owned by The /riory of Dn land and the Islands for the -rder of ,t. 5ohn. The company operates the Ambulance ,ervice on the Island. In '&&' ,t. 5ohn celebrated 2& years of service on Alderney. There is no paramedic service available on Alderney.

The Alderney Voluntary ire !rigade


The Alderney Voluntary 1ire Bri ade has a crew of ## volunteer firefi hters, includin two ladies and is headed by 1ire (hief /aul Aoore. The fleet of vehicles includes # water tender with ladder, ' water carriers and # !and 6over. The bri ade avera es .& call)outs a year with an avera e response time of @ust $ minutes. Alderney?s Voluntary 1ire Bri ade has a new station which was officially opened by the !t. +overnor ,ir 5ohn 1oley on >ednesday '& -ctober '&&.. The old fire station in ,t. Anne?s had served a purpose but was too small to house all the appliances, was effectively in the wron location for easy access and fast e:it and provided very limited facilities for the bri ade?s ten volunteer firefi hters. !ocated at (rabby, the impressive '':.$.2metre purpose)built station stands ne:t to the ambulance station, below the Ai not Aemorial Hospital and has direct access to main roads. The steel)frame construction is fitted out with modern technolo y, has four appliance bays, a workshop, kit room, mess and a trainin room.
