Why are we so good at those items? Lesson Flow: Detroit found its niche in the Auto industry Cars however had existed for a number of years, so Detroit did not invent the car. Enter Henry Ford. I will do a small amount of direct instruction as I introduce Ford, and we will consider his citizenship. Like in the government classes we have talked about effective citizenship, Ford fits this model. He was involved, looked to give back to his community, and certainly made an impact on Detroit. Progress of the Assembly line: o Give 7 students a bucket of beads, and string. They are all artisans, the best in the world at making bracelets. They are in competition from one another, but they all make a good living. How much should they charge for the bracelets (consider time, materials, skill. Quick write. o Have them each make one bracelet and time them. Okay, so it took them a very long time, but they got it done, and they are great bracelets. o Now, brainstorm a better way for this to be done. o Everyone else will line up and will be given a bucket of the same beads. One person on one end will be given string, and then they will form an assembly line, showing that they can produce more and they are comparable products. o Thus, the assembly line, an invention of Henry Ford, revolutionized the way that industry was done, and brought Detroit extreme wealth. Finish with another short discussion/direct instruction focused on the fact that this boom made Detroit a highly successful city, making it an extremely desirable city to live in. Model city for people to live in.
