Veterinary Instrumentation presented the Simon Award 2014 for outstanding contribution in the field of veterinary surgery to Michael Guilliard MA, VetMB, CertSAO, FRCVS
Sheffield, 14 April 2014 Veterinary Instrumentation, the leading supplier of instruments and orthopedic implants to veterinary surgeons in the United Kingdom, announced today that its Founder and Chairman, John Lapish, presented the Simon Award 2014 to Michael Guilliard MA, VetMB, CertSAO, FRCVS. The presentation took place as part of the recent annual prestigious British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) Award ceremony at the BSAVA Congress, the largest small animal Veterinary Congress in Europe, at Birmingham ICC. The Simon Award is presented annually to a member of the BSAVA for outstanding contributions in the field of veterinary surgery. Simon, a Golden Retriever owned by J. Thomas, a blind telephone operator, also became blind and had his sight restored by surgery, thus enabling him to resume his full duties as a guide dog. Mr. Thomas, in appreciation of the work and surgical skill which had made this possible, inaugurated and presented this award at the 1962 BSAVA Annual Congress. The award took the form of a bronze statuette engraved with the Latin phrase Deus semper tuas manus regat, which translated into English states for an outstanding feat of surgery. The statuette was loaned to the winner for the following year. In 2003, Mr. Lapish was awarded the Simon Award for his contributions in the field of veterinary implants and instrumentation. In that year, BSAVA decided that the original Simon statuette was too fragile to be loaned out to the award winners and would be kept permanently at BSAVA headquarters. Mr. Lapish, on behalf of Veterinary Instrumentation, offered to restore the original statuette and create replicas that could be presented annually by BSAVA and kept by the winners. In addition, a further set of replicas was created and presented to past winners as a permanent recognition of their achievements. Dr. Guilliard received the BSAVA Simon Award for his outstanding contributions in the field of veterinary surgery. Over past years, he has played a significant role in the organization of the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association (BVOA) and has made regular contributions to the Veterinary Scientific literature. I know Michael Guilliard and his excellent work for many years. The Simon Award is an appropriate recognition for his contribution, said Mr. Lapish. Dr. Guilliard currently works as a traveling specialist orthopedic surgeon in the North West of England.
