Youth Entrepreneurs Get Ready For
Junior Dragons Den!
Modeled afer CBCs Te Dragons Den, where qualify-
ing entrepreneurs pitch their business idea to a group of
potential investors, Junior Dragons Den, the West Koo-
tenay-wide business contest for youth entrepreneurs, is
taking fight!
Spearheaded by Community Futures, students in
Grades 8-12 from throughout the West Kootenay-Bound-
ary region were invited to submit a business concept paper
and a brief 1.5 to 2 minute video elevator pitch, explain-
ing their business idea. Submissions were then evaluated
based upon fnances, marketability, the product or service
and the overall plan presented.
Were excited and inspired by the level of detail and
sophistication presented by all applicants and would like
to congratulate everyone on a job well done, stated Don

Poet Jane Byers Launches Book
During National Poetry Month
Te Nelson Public Library celebrates National Poetry
Month with a book launch poet Jane Byers launches her
frst volume of poetry, Steeling Efects, on Tursday, April
17 at 7 pm.
Published this spring by Caitlin Press, Steeling Ef-
fects has already attracted words of praise. Shannon
Webb-Campbell, Critic-in-residence for Canadian
Women in the Literary Arts, says that Jane Byers poems
are an incendiary experience of language, infaming
mind, heart, and embodiment. Its a stunning debut col-
lection of poetry, deeply queer, beautiful, and expansive.
Refecting on her own life from dif cult birth through
teenage challenges to new parenthood in a same-sex re-
lationship, Byers asks questions about strength and resili-
ence. Her poems explore the raising of children, lesbian
and gay issues, and sexism. Poems that deal with health
and safety in the workplace draw from her professional
experience fostering resilience in injured workers, cur-
rently through her job at Worksafe BC.
Steeling Efects is comprised of some 65 poems written
over the past decade. Byers is a past winner of the Nelson
and District Poetry Competition and was the 2014 recipi-
ent of the Richard Carver Award. Her work has appeared
in a number of literary journals and anthologies.
Ive long admired Janes tenacious and expansive spirit,
which has the ability to write from a wide view and still
pay attention with fne detail, says poet Susan Andrews
Grace. I am thrilled that a copy of Steeling Efects will
soon be on my shelf.

New law turns shacked-up lovers into
married couples and Room-mates with
benefts watch out! trumpeted headlines
when BCs Family Law Act came into
force March 18, 2013.
These days, many more couples choose
to live together for the long term than get
married. The need to better deal with this
new reality, and the fallout when some of
these common-law relationships inevita-
bly end, is one reason for the new law.
Also, family law disputes often took up
heaps of court time. The new law recog-
nizes that the bitter 'I`ll see you in court!
approach is often not the best way to go.
If you have children, its particularly
important that you have a civil relation-
ship with your ex-partner long after you
separate. The new law refects that it may
be better to try to work through family
break-up issues. It encourages mediation,
getting the help of a parenting co-ordina-
tor and negotiated agreements instead of
going to court.
But the biggest change and the one that
prompted the dramatic headlines has to
do with the splitting of assets and debts
after a break-up.
Before, if you lived in a marriage-like rela-
tionship for two years or more, you could
ask Ior fnancial support aIter a break-up.
But when it came to property like the
family home, the situation was different.
Married couples generally got one-half of
the family assets, no matter which spouse
owned them (though the court could order
a different split). Common-law partners,
though, even if they contributed to the re-
lationship fnancially or by looking aIter
the children, faced an uphill court battle
to try and get a share in property owned
by the other.
Now, if youve been living common-law
for two or more years, the law treats you
the same as a married person for divid-
ing up your property and debts. Family
property is now divided equally, unless
that would be signifcantly unIair. You
have up to two years after breaking up to
make a claim.
But for both married and common-law
couples, the new law excludes certain
property from being split equally. Basi-
cally, you get to keep whats yours if you
owned the property beforehand. Also, a
gift or inheritance (or things bought with
that money), or insurance money or per-
sonal injury compensation specifc to you,
that you got during the relationship gen-
erally stays with you and isnt carved up
between you and your ex-partner only
its increase in value during the relation-
ship is shared.
If you dont want the new laws property
rules to apply, you can agree with your
partner to opt out (by a written agreement)
and divide your property and debts as you
see ft upon a break-up.
It may make a lot of sense, well before
the two-year common-law milestone is
reached, to fgure out iI you share similar
long-term goals and how you want to split
your assets and debts in case you separate.
The new law deals with many other things
like giving notice if you want to move
with your kids, parenting arrangements,
family law protective orders and more.
Seek good legal help if you need assis-

April 10, 2014
Beginning mid-April, Nelson Hydro will be
undertaking a tree trimming and hazard
tree removal program within the City
of Nelson throughout the remainder of
2014. The work will include trimming and
pruning all vegetation and trees in close
proximity to power lines to minimum
industry standard specications. These
specications will result in wire to
vegetation clearances as follows:
Transmission voltage (60,000 volts)
- 5 metres clearance
Distribution primary voltage (25,000
volts) - 3 metres clearance
Distribution secondary voltage (750 volts
or less) - 1 metre clearance
Communication lines (Telus/Shaw, etc.)
1 metre clearance
The work will be done by Certied Utility
Arborists, and may include more than
one contractor crew. All crews will have
the Nelson Hydro logo displayed on their
trucks.

the areas involved and the proposed
sequence of work.

Crews have been instructed to
directionally prune using proper
arboricultural techniques to obtain the
minimum clearances as listed above.
Safety and fewer tree-related hydro

Aga was introduced to Rolf structural
integration over a decade ago while
experiencing chronic pain. Chronic pain
is hard to live with and I wanted to be able
to help those who are feeling helpless, like
I did. At the time Aga was working in
medical engineering, in a hi-tech job at the
height of her career in Boulder, Colorado.
Yet every day was a struggle and I didnt
know if I would make it to work the next
day. Aga recounts.
My sitting career began like everyone
elses, in the elementary school. After school
I would sit some more and play the piano.
Then the sitting continued though the years
while studying engineering at the University
of Calgary, followed by ten more years of
work at the computer. The years of sitting
have taken their toll.
When I got introduced to Rolf structural
integration and movement education, my
body started changing. I was drawn to study
this body therapy because of its primary
attention to gravity. I guess I am an engineer
at heart and was inspired to name my practice
Gravity Therapy.
She completed her training in 2003 and
since then she has been expanding her skills
in leading edge body therapies. German
and French osteopaths are currently leading
the way in manual therapies. The focus now
is on the precision rather than force, which
requires intricate knowledge of anatomy and
physiology. Aga has been tirelessly traveling
to the US to seek out the knowledge that is
ooding in from Europe. It has been a real
transformation for me. I love it and love to
participate in the healing process with people
who come to my practice.

As a little boy growing up in inner city
Connecticut, Davide fantasized about
being a homesteader. When adults asked
him what he wanted to do when he grew
up, he would reply without hesitation, I
want to live in the woods and grow my
own food. In his mid-twenties, living
in the Green Mountains of northern
Vermont, Davide found himself doing
just that. Having apprenticed as a
carpenter, he zealously built his own
house and delved into organic farming.
Love brought Davide to Canada. He,
his Quebecer wife, Elise, and their young
son Micah, established themselves in the
Kootenays. They acquired a beautiful
old Quaker homestead in Argenta and
began growing garlic and basil as market
crops.
Wanting to create a greenhouse that
was both
aesthetically
p l e a s i n g
and durable, Davide sought assistance
from local master carpenters. Together
they designed a greenhouse made
from locally-sourced cedar that would
withstand the Kootenay snow load.
Operating out of a timber-frame barn
on their property, Argenta Greenhouse
Company has become a family affair.
Elise, currently a third year student in
acupuncture, handles the online aspect
of the business, while Micah, now
eight years old, loves helping out at
greenhouse raisings.

part of the business is meeting the back-
yard gardeners, farmers and seed-savers

Born in Canada and raised in Ireland, David has been lucky
enough to have had many diverse and interesting jobs along the
way. From managing a boat hire business in Ireland, setting up his
own forestry business in Scotland which included horse logging for
the royal family on the Balmoral Estate, building wooden boats in
England and Marthas Vineyard in the US, to the construction of
timber framed homes in Canada.
Those experiences have helped David to negotiate with people
from different countries and all walks of life. Its so important,
David says, The real estate business is about building trusting re-
lationships with people. The whole process of home buying can be
hugely emotional for a lot of people.
If there is one particular thing that David stresses, its listening.
I hate being talked at by someone trying to sell me something all
of us do! So why would I want to do that to someone else? Listen to
people, have a conversation, build trust.
Working primarily out of the Kaslo ofce, David also covers the
smaller North Kootenay Lake communities and all the way south,
including Nelson. The areas are surprisingly complementary. I
have clients in Nelson who want to move up the lake and vice versa.
Some of my out-of-province clients and those from abroad who are
thinking of relocating to British Columbia are often researching an
area around Kaslo and Nelson before deciding what they want to do.
I drive up to Kaslo from Nelson almost daily depending on
where the appointments are. I never think of it as a commute, just a
wonderfully scenic drive.

Ingeborg (Inga) Frass (Loennecke)
January 10, 1925- August 7, 2013
Inga was born in Northern Germany (Grafelde)
in her grandmothers farmhouse on Jan. 10,
1925, and grew up in a small community, Syke,
near Bremen. As the eldest of 7 children she was al-
ways busy babysitting. Her father was a high school
teacher. Her parents built a large, isolated house on a forested hill with
a magnicent view of Syke. There the family raised rabbits, silkworms,
kept bees and tended a large forest garden. Ingas mother sang and
played lute and piano. Ingas father played cello and the children played
piano, violin and recorder. They practised together and had regular
family concerts. On Sundays they listened to classical concerts on the
radio together. Books were held in high esteem, and Inga grew up with
a love of reading.
From their hilltop home the family saw the re bombing and resulting
inferno of Bremen during the war. They managed to move a stray re
bomb out of the house before detonation, but otherwise they were
kept safe in their rural home. Ingas father had been awarded an Iron
Cross for valour in the First World War, was one of few survivors of his
regiment after Verdun. Due to his injuties, he remained in Syke as a
schoolteacher during World War ll. This was extremely lucky for the chil-
dren. With their large gardens, the family managed to be self-sufcient.
Inga was sent to a girls high school in Bremen in 1938, but by the summer
of 1939 the students were spending most of their school day in bunkers
because of random bombing and air attacks. Inga returned to Syke to
complete her schooling. Ingas very kind and much loved mother died
after childbirth when Inga was only 15. Inga and her sister took turns
staying home from school to care for the household and their newborn
brother until the family found a housekeeper. During these years, some
family friends moved to Berlin. After the war, Inga was devastated to
learn that they had been deported to Auschwitz.
Inga studied to be a home economics teacher in Nienburg (1942) until
increasing air raids made the train trips to the school impossible. She
was then sent to Greifswald on work duty to adjust barometers. Inga
started her nurses training in Tuebingen in 1943. She recalled always
being hungry and tired. The students often had to move all of their
patients into the hospital basement during nightly air raid alarms. After
the end of the war, in 1945, Inga walked about 650 km from Tuebingen
to Syke through a war-ravaged Germany. She was relieved to nd her
family alive. Inga always expressed deep sympathy for the people of all
war-torn countries.
Inga completed her training as a sick-childrens nurse in Bremen at DRK
Krankenhaus, and from 1945-49 she nursed in Bremen. In these post-
war years, her salary for one month was just enough to buy some un-
derwear. As a nurse, she received her uniform and accommodation. She
worked 12 hour days, 7 days a week, and had only a day off each
month. The few times she had a full day off, she walked 20 km to Syke
to help her family with chores.
Inga lived in England from 1950-54. She studied midwifery in Wolver-
hamptom, and then worked as a midwife in London. She really enjoyed
these years. She delivered over 1,000 English babies, including many
home-deliveries in houses without running water. Inga was a regular
visitor to Londons art galleries and museums and took long walks in the
countryside. Inga returned to Bremen in 1954, and worked at St. Josefs
Stift as a midwife. She wished to see the world, and chose between
nursing in Canada or Peru.
In 1956, Inga emigrated to Canada by boat to start a nursing position
in St. Catherines, Ontario with only one suitcase and 20$. In St. Cather-
ines, Inga worked in maternity. After a few years she moved to Edmon-
ton and became head nurse of a maternity ward. She was a midwife,
and a sick-childrens nurse, but despite her qualications, she was sur-
prised when she was offered the position as head nurse.
Inga met Michael Frass at the home of mutual friends in Edmonton.
They began corresponding and then married August 8, 1961. Their rst
home was in Castlegar, but Inga fell in love with Nelson and they moved
here in 1962. Inga would reside in Nelson for over 50 years, more than
half of her life. Inga started working at KLDH. Only full-time nursing po-
sitions were available at KLDH at that time, so Inga chose to work part
time as an RN (registered nurse) at Mt. St. Francis hospital after she was
widowed with 2 small children. She worked there until her retirement.
Inga always regretted not being able to work as a midwife in Canada.
She loved midwifery. She was excited when midwives were nally al-
lowed to practice in BC, but she had already retired.
Michael and Inga bought a house on 614 Latimer St. They had 2 chil-
dren, Chris and Hanna. Michael worked at the CPR, and was tragically
killed in an accident in 1966, when the children were very small. Inga
worked very hard and lived frugally for her children. She was grateful
to her neighbours and to friends from the United Church for their kind-
ness during these years. In 1972 the family moved to Rosemont when
the children started school. Inga was always grateful that she had been
granted a mortgage to buy her own Rosemont home. In the early sev-
enties, single women with children were only rarely granted mortgages.
Inga often spoke about how difcult life was for single parents, both in
the 60s and later.
Over the years, Inga kept busy working, raising 2 children, caring for her
beautiful garden, canning, doing needlework, reading many books, do-
ing crossword puzzles, listening to CBC radio, feeding birds and growing
medicinal herbs. She was a member of the rock club, and a volunteer at
the IODE. Inga was Lutheran by baptism, and attended the Lutheran
Church in Rosemont since 1972. She supported numerous charities, two
favourites were the Christian Blind Mission and SOS Childrens Villages.
Inga was unassuming and somewhat shy, but very well read. She had
well-informed, progressive views on many topics.
In loving memory, deeply missed.
Our dear Mom, Inga worked hard all of her active life, and took
pride in what she had achieved. Though she was a single par-
ent (widow), Inga often went without, in order to save for Chris,
Hanna and her grandchildren. She helped us as she was able.
She was proud to give Chris and Hanna property and to help
Chris to buila his house. She was a fair ana unselhshly loyal
mother and grandmother. She loved us deeply and we always
came hrst. She workea so hara for us. We are aeeply grateful.
She was very independent until she suffered a stroke in May
2011. After her stroke Inga understood her surroundings, but had
aifhculty expressing herself (expressive aphasia ana ayspraxia).
She still loved to see friends and family and loved watching good
movies, news, soccer, and nature programs. She liked puzzles and
looking at books, especially about geology, rocks and minerals.
After her stroke, Inga had a beautiful smile, and though she could
not speak, her lovely smiles brightened our days and our lives.
She was our sunshine. During the last two years of her life, Inga
was well and dearly cared for by the staff of Jubilee Manor. She
passed away on August 7, 2013, the day before her 52nd wedding
anniversary to her late husband Michael.
Inga was much loved, and we miss her so much! Her life was
not easy, she worked very hard, her childhood and youth were
disrupted by dictatorship and war, and she was left a widow with
two babies. But her life was full of caring in her loyal and unas-
suming way: for siblings, father, children, grandchildren, and for
her patients as a childrens nurse, midwife, and geriatric nurse
(she loved her infant patients most!).
Inga is deeply missed by her grandchildren Chad Frass and Elise
Tesling; her children Chris Frass and Hanna Tesling (Kent Lind-
qvist); her brothers, sisters and in-laws in Germany, her nieces,
nephews and their families, and by friends in Canada, England
and Germany. Inga was predeceased by her husband Michael
Frass and her baby grandson Tyler Frass. It comforts us that
she is together with these loved ones now. Our dearest Oma and
Mami has passed on. Our hearts are broken, and we long for her
beautiful smiles.
Inga had a beautiful memorial ceremony in Syke, Germany (where
she grew up) in September 2013. Ingas urn will be interred in
Nelson beside her late husband Michael on April 22 at 11am.
In lieu of owers, Inga woula have wishea for aonations to SOS
Childrens Villages.

Nonviolent Direct Action Training
Comes To Te Kootenays
Tree community groups in the Kootenays are bringing
nonviolent direct action training to Nelson. Te Nelson
Chapter of the Council of Canadians, Kootenays for a Pipe-
line-Free BC, and the Kootenay Direct Action Commun-
ity, have united to bring none other than Brigette DePape,
the young page who stood up in parliament holding a Stop
Harper sign, to share her experiences with direct action.
According to Montana Burgess, speaking on behalf
of the Kootenay Direct Action Community, So many
people I talk to want to take some form of action. Tey
have signed petitions, written letters, attended events,
but they want to take the next step. Tis training is the
next step that will give our community the tools to come
together and take action to stop the erosion of democracy
in our country.
Tis intensive one-day workshop will take place on
Saturday, May 3 from 9 am - 5 pm at the Oxygen Arts
Centre, #3, 320 Vernon Street (alleyway entrance). Along
with Brigette DePape will be Leila Darwish, organizer
with the British Columbia-Yukon Organizing Of ce of
the Council of Canadians; and Randy Janzen, Instructor
in the Peace Studies Program at Selkirk College and for-
mer Director of the MIR Centre.
