Rems homework 3 The figured world I am observing is cell phone usage in a public place.

The public place I decided to observe was the uncc campus .I figured that this public place would be a good one to observe since the majority of the students are between the ages of 18-23. By just looking around I quickly came to realize that about 7 of every 10 people were holding their phone in their hands, which is quite common for me to do especially while transitioning from class to class. Only a few of the people I observed were on the phone talking while most of them were either texting, or social networking. I didnt expect cellphone usage to be as frequent as I observed. I observed different areas on campus, in which had different conventions of appropriate behavior when it came to cellphone usage. The first area I observed on campus was my chemistry class in burson building. During the duration of the class I saw that most of the students had their cell phones on their desks, that if they werent using them to text or socialize. An inappropriate behavior in class would be to constantly be on your phone rather than focusing on the instruction, or even go as far as answering the phone in class. Different classes have minor policy changes when it comes to cellphones but for the most part cell phones shouldnt be used as a distraction to instructional time. The library was the second area I observed in UNCC , I realized that a lot of the rules and conventions went hand in hand to those observed in class. Its understood that phone usage is limited and or prohibited in a library setting especially in a quiet zone. Texting and phone usage wasnt very frequent in a library setting since a lot of studying and group reviews were going on. In contrast, outside of buildings most students and staff had a phone in their hand, as discussed before. It is appropriate to be on your phone while walking and transitioning from class to class. This is the most basic way we keep up with news, friends and family. The different discourse communities I expect to find are two types. First those that are technology dependent and those that are very old fashioned. Whether it was instructor or students at uncc. I realized that some people are much more attached to technology more specifically their phones than others.

Purpose of the post: This homework posts purpose was so that we didnt procrastinate. This was very helpful and I appreciated the fact that Ashlyn really worked hard to keep us from rushing through our work. This assignment was our first observation that would be included on the discourse community assignment. By having this observation count as a homework post grade it forced me to go out and actually do the observation. This prevented me from doing all the observations on one day. In conclusion I feel like the purpose of this post was to help us create a good paper in the long run by not procrastinating.
