Laure Ingabire English 1102 Homework Response #1 13 January 2014

Describe your initial reactions to this piece. Point to specific language and phrasing throughout the exchange which contributed to your reaction. I was completely shocked that a student could ever talk to a superior in this way. Granted, I did enjoy seeing the interaction between the professor and the student, it was unprofessional for the student to talk to the professor so disrespectfully. The student seems very entitled and unaware that the world does not revolve around him. After reading the professors response back to the student, I concluded that his tone and language throughout the response was completely warranted. The professor did show signs of an attitude toward the student, but only because the student showed zero signs of courtesy and respect toward the professor. To what extent does a teacher/professor have a right to demand certain standards of behavior? A boss/employer? At what point does a person cross the line with demanding certain behavior? Again, think in terms of specific language and arguments made in this email exchange The teacher has complete authority over his/her students; it is then up to the students to give the teacher full respect and consideration during the class. There is a level of superiority that the teacher holds within the classroom. The students also play a role-the role as the subordinate. The roles that both parties play within the classroom setting lets people know what exactly they should be doing and how they should act. It is to be expected that once you are accepted into a college, you are mature and knowledgeable enough to work with adults. It is ridiculous that the student wrote to his teacher in this way. To what extent does a student have a right to complain as such? Does it matter that the student is a graduate student? Would you expect to see this sort of behavior at the undergraduate level? Again, point to specific language in the emails. The student made it clear in the email that he was unaware of the classroom expectations and rules due to the fact that he did not receive information on the class. With this information, he should not complain about the teachers policies because he did not take the time to inform himself about them. Only when the student can confidently say that he is aware of the class rules, can he contact the teacher about his complaints. When a student does plan to complain to a teacher, he must do so respectful and appropriately.

After reading this professor's stance, would you take his class? Why or why not? Be specific. This email would not keep me from signing up for a course taught by this professor. The professor did not ask for anything outrageous from the student; all the professor asked for was common courtesy and respect.

After reading the student's response, would you want to work with this student in a course group setting? Why or why not? Be specific.

I would hate working with this student in a group setting. I would imagine that he would order every member around, and sit down and not contribute to any of the project. He seems very entitled, and that it a character trait that I do not appreciate at all.
