St. Johann – Alpendorf
The “Pongau Cathedral”
This double-steeple parish church, with its Gothic
wooden carvings, is very much the emblem of St.
Johann. It was first chronicled back in 924. After the
devastating fire of 1855, the church was totally rebuilt
from the ground up (1855 – 1861). The neo-Gothic
altars house numerous late-Gothic figures. Its power-
ful setting above the Salzach Valley, along with its
majestic interior, make this building one of the leading
examples of sacred architecture.

The crowning element of the Neue Residenz is
definitely its famous glockenspiel. The 35 bells
were cast in Antwerp between 1688 and 1689
and brought to Salzburg under Archbishop Jo-
hann Ernst Graf Thun in 1702.
CLOSED: The glockenspiel is closed until mid
2010 for restoration.
Times: The bells will not play while restoration
work continues.

Equipment and documentation from the organi-
zation’s beginnings to the present day.
One rarity is a wheeled stretcher as used around
the turn of the 20th century. New: vintage Land
Rover (1962). A variety of videos provide insights
into the life of the Red Cross.

Since June 1, 2007, the Salzburg Museum,
housed in the wonderfully restored Neue Resi-
denz, has presented fascinating insights into
history, art and culture.
The permanent exhibitions "Salzburg in person"
(1st floor) and "Mythos Salzburg" (2nd floor)
present Salzburg personalities of the past and
present, along with evidence of the stamp left on
Salzburg by its prince archbishops. Special exhi-
bitions in the Art Hall, highlights from the arc-
haeology and medieval collections exhibited in
the Panorama Passage.

This palace was built by Archbishop Wolf Die-
trich von Raitenau in 1606 for his beloved Sa-
lome Alt. Today it houses the offices of Salz-
burg’s mayor and the city administration, which
means that tours are not possible.
The baroque marble staircase, designed by
Georg Raphael Donner, is particularly interesting
– Angel Staircase: daily ca. 8-6.
Marble Hall: former banquet hall of the Prince
Archbishop, in which Leopold Mozart and his
children, Wolfgang and Nannerl all performed,
regarded today as one of the world’s most beau-
tiful wedding chapels. Tours: Monday, Wednes-
day,Thursday: ca. 8-4, Tuesday, Friday: 1-4,
tours not possible during special events. Free
admission.
Mirabell Gardens: daily from about 6 a.m. until
nightfall.
Hedgerow Theatre: one of the oldest such thea-
tres north of the Alps, closed during the winter
months.

The museum is located on the Mönchsberg -
Oskar-Kokoschka-Weg – at the entrance to the
reservoir, across from an information board
about native bird life and close to the Rich-
terhöhe.
The Water Museum is a part of the Mönchsberg
reservoir system; with a water storage capacity of
25,000 m³, the reservoir is an important source of
water for Salzburg City. The history of water
supply is documented through numerous inter-
esting exhibits. Visitors can take a journey
through this fascinating world.

Every first Saturday in the month, between 12
noon and 4:00 p.m.
Group tours for groups of 5 or more, please
make an appointment by phone.
Visits to the Mönchsberg reservoir are followed
by a guided tour of the museum.
Lasts ca. 1-1 1/2 hrs., bring a jacket or sweater –
