2-6 November 2009

ICTs and climate change: Official side-event by ITU, OECD, GeSI

5 November 2009, 18:00-19:30
Room 4 (FIRA, Pavilion 8 and Nexo C)

Draft agenda

ITU and OECD in partnership with GeSI will hold a side-event on “ICTs and Climate Change” where top
decision-makers from governments, international organisations and industry will share their views and
solutions on how ICTs can help to address climate change.

Rationale: Significant CO2 emission cuts will be required to slow down global warming. Developed countries
are aiming for 80% cuts by 2050, developing countries might need to cut them by half during the same period.
Innovation in information and communication technologies (ICTs) is key to achieving ambitious emissions
reductions. At the Barcelona meeting four weeks ahead of COP15, the ITU, OECD and international partners
will discuss how ICTs can help reduce potential CO2 emissions by 15% in 2020. Biggest savings can be achieved
in the energy, transport and construction sectors. The potential of ICTs to combat global warming is relevant
to developed and developing countries alike.
