Skill leads to first impressions. Skill attracts interviewer interest. Active Listening. Listening is one of the most powerful tools in your business a rsenal. Yet with so many distractions today fighting for our focus, it s easy to f eel like your attention span is shorter than ever. But is multi-tasking really s uch a good idea? A 2008 study found college students who spent time texting, che cking email, and updating their Facebook got poorer grades than those who paid a ttention to lectures without distractions. Active listening is important if you want to really know what s going on i n your workplace, with a project, or just to make coworkers and employees feel h eard. Everyone wants to feel heard, so wo rking on your active listening skills is a great way to be a better boss or empl oyee on the job. Communication. Communication goes hand-in-hand with active listening. You need t o have top-notch communication skills if you re going to talk to upper management, customers, and your workforce. One study revealed communication skills were the number one soft skill employers wanted employees to possess. Communication skil ls filter down into everything else you do in the workplace. After all, what goo d is nailing a big project if you can t communicate its importance to customers, u sers, or management? If you need to sharpen up your communication skills, take a public speak ing class or challenge yourself to contribute more in social business settings. Public speaking is almost always ranked as Americans No. 1 fear, so know you re not alone if talking in front of groups makes you nervous. Communication skills are key, so it s time to face your fears in order to improve your professional life. Ability to Negotiate. Like public speaking, negotiating makes many people nervou s. Unfortunately for nervous negotiation nellies, it s an essential business skill in many different industries and one that is increasingly falling by the wayside. The ability to negotiate shows you know what you re talking about, you re confident, and you re willing to stick up for yours elf. Optimism makes workers more resilient, meaning you can more ea sily handle personal and professional setbacks. A recent study by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission looked at how bankers viewed optimistic entrepreneurs. Would they be less likely to trust someone who dreams big? It found the opposite was true, since banks were more li kely to approve loan applications to more enthusiastic and optimistic entreprene urs. Success is often found when you get off the beaten trail and get creative. Every industry needs innovative and creative thinking. Creativity is a skill often overlooked, but it s invaluable to help companies move forward an d ensure your organization doesn t end up behind the times. Technical skills and qualifications are important in every industry, but this do esn t mean you should skimp on these overlooked skills.
