GENERATION
List of Power Generators in Jharkhand
POWER GENERATORS

1. Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS) - Power generating company of JSEB at Patratu. 2. Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited, Lalpania 3. Damodar Valley Corporation 4. Tata Power Company Limited, Jojobera, Jamshedpur Jharkhand State Electricity Board: The Jharkhand State Electricity Board operates 2 generation plants- Patratu Thermal Power Station (PTPS) and Sikidiri Hydel Power Plant (SHPS) within the state. The current status of the plants is provided below.

Patratu Thermal Power Station: The plant is located in Patratu, Ramgarh having a total installed capacity of 840 MW. However the capacity is de-rated to 770 MW owing to operational disabilities. The plant includes 10 units and the first unit was commissioned in 1966.

Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited: It operates 2 thermal units of 210 MW generation capacities in the state of Jharkhand. The Corporation supplies 100% of the power generated to JSEB for distribution.

Tata Power Limited: The main generating station of Tata Power in Jharkhand is the Jojobera Plant having 5 units at a total installed capacity of 547.5 MW. Unit I has a capacity of 67.5 MW followed by 120 MW each for Unit II, Unit III and Unit IV. In 2011 the commercial operation of Unit V began having an installed capacity of 120 MW. All of the generation capacity is used to power steel works of Jamshedpur Tata Steel plant, supplying power to consumers of steel works and city of Jamshedpur by TSL.

CAPACITY
Installed Capacity The state has a total installed capacity of 3,050 MW 12 (States generating Capacity and Allocation from Central Generating Stations as well as Private). A large portion Fuel Mix of Installed Capacity (FY12) Coal Renewable 1% of the installed capacity is coal based.

Future Power scenario in Jharkhand :

Keeping in view the future demand of energy, the country requires doubling its generation by 2012. This requires a massive investment in the sector and to help the sector, Electricity Act 2003 provides the lead, by making provision for the private investment to play vital role. For economizing the cost of generation certain steps will help such as: 1. Cost of transporting coal will reduce the cost of generation to a great extent. 2. For thermal power, generation plants can be installed where coal, water and transmission line are easily available at cheaper rate. 3. Cheap land and labor will also reduce the cost of generation.

With above points in mind, Jharkhand seems to be an obvious choice for setting up generating plants. Jharkhand has about 33% of nation's steam coal reserve, it has water, cheap labor and the State Government has promised easy availability of land for setting of plants. Transporting coal will be costlier than transmitting energy to any part of the country. With above considerations numbers of power plants are likely to come up in Jharkhand. Central Government too is deciding to allot coal seam/ mines to the power plants. As on date following are the power plants that are cleared or under process for set up here:

TRANSMISSION
The transmission network is divided into two zones. Under each transmission zone there are four transmission circles which functions through divisions and sub-division. Transmission Network Zone Circle Ranchi Transmission Zone Ranchi Jamshedpur Dumka Transmission Zone Deoghar Dumka

Distribution Network: Distribution network is divided into five supply areas. The supply areas in turn are divided into circles, divisions, sub-divisions and sections. There are eleven circles in all.

DISTRIBUTION

Jharkhand State Electricity Board: JSEB being the state utility in generation, transmission and distribution has the highest extent of reach in the state of Jharkhand. It typically supplies power in the DVC command area (7 districts falling under the purview of the DVC Act) at 11kV or less and in the remaining 17 states at both HT and LT levels.

JUSCO(Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company Limited): It is a subsidiary of Tata Steel managing the power division. Total customers as approved by Commission for 2012-13 stands at 859. JUSCO serves a total consumption of around 302 MUs (as approved by Commission in 2012- 13).

Tata Steel Limited: The company enjoys low T&D loss ranging between 7-8 %. The total number of consumers stands at around 46036 with a total connected load of 722000 units(kWh and kVA combined). TSL purchases power from Tata Power, DVC and captive plant of TSW (Tata Steel Works) for meeting is energy requirement. As per T.O 2012-13 Tata Steel recovers at least 80% of the average cost of supply from all consumer categories. As such the amount of cross subsidy is lower.
