MASONRY LAB 1

MASONRY CONSTRUCTION Objectives: The objectives of this laboratory are to have students observe masonry construction and repeat the following laboratory tests and other masonry construction operations: Construct a masonry mini-wall of clay masonry units; Determination of Initial Rate of bsorption !IR " for clay unit using simplified method; #roportion$ batch and mi% masonry mortar !types #C& and 'C"; 'easure mortar wor(ability by flow table; 'easure mortar air content by pressure-meter method; and Construct prisms for subse)uent compression and bond wrench testing*

+tudents will wor( in groups of five* Part 1A: Construct a masonr !a"" ," #ic( up --. bric( for each member from the storage area and bring them to the structures lab* /" 0ring the proportions for mi%ing Type +-#C& mortar to class* 'i%ing instructions: 1se a measuring device that can easily be filled to the same volume; #re-blend cementitious materials !portland cement and lime"; 2et mi%er with handful of sand and water to (eep cement from stic(ing to mi%er sides; 1se loose$ damp sand; dd half of the sand prior to adding cement to the mi%er; 1se cement that is opened immediately or stored in an environment protected from moisture; 1se cool$ potable water; and 'i% mortar for three to five minutes after all material is placed in the mi%er* 3" Construct a masonry wall using the prepared mortar* 4ach group member must lay a minimum of - bric(* There should be at least three of the following bric( orientations in your wall: stretcher; header; rowloc( header; soldier; shiner and sailor* -" Ta(e a picture of an elevation view of each constructed wall* 4ach group member must turn in a picture of the wall labeling all bric( orientations used* 5" 4ach group is responsible for deconstructing the wall$ cleaning the bric(s used and returning them to the pallet*
