INTRODUCTION Unlike the skills of speaking and listening which are acquired almost subconsciously, the reading skill

has to be taught. Reading is a complex mental activity which was once thought of as being a passive process. This, of course, been rejected and today reading is viewed an active mental process as the reader interacts with the text and derives meaning from print. This module, TSL3106 Teaching Reading Skills and Vocabulary in the Primary ESL lassroom is a compilation of eight topics, as listed below! written specifically for the "# credit hour weekly learning module for the $$% programme.

Techniques for Teaching ,ocabulary ,&! Techniques for -ssessing Reading 'kills and ,ocabulary ,&&! )nrichment and Remedial Reading -ctivities ,&&&! *esson planning for *ower $rimary and Upper $rimary These topics are spread across five interactive sessions. &n topic ., you will learn the definitions surrounding reading, identify the different moments in the primary reading context and understand better the key concepts and issues related to exploring factors that influence reading readiness. &n topic /, you will explore the different theoretical models of reading and how to link theory with practical applications in the )'* classroom. -ctivities to consider include, sight words, language learning experience and phonics. Topic ", will look into reading skills in the (alaysian primary school )nglish language curriculum. &n topic 0, you will explore the stages of a reading comprehension lesson and be able to identify the key teaching activities of the *iteracy 1our. Topic 2, describes techniques to vocabulary acquisition in the (alaysian primary school and provides key suggestions on selecting and adapting activities to increase students3 lexical knowledge.

&n topic 4, you will explore student#based formative and summative assessment theory to effectively evaluate reading and vocabulary acquisition. -n alternative assessment is also introduced. Topic 5 deals with the concepts of enrichment and remedial reading. 'ome suggested activities are also listed. &n topic 6, you will look at lesson planning for a reading lesson in relation to the (alaysian primary school )nglish curriculum. Topic 7 deals with micro#teaching. 'ome principles of micro#teaching will be discussed before you conduct your own micro#teaching. 8y going through all the sessions diligently and doing the tasks given, you will be able to enhance your knowledge in the teaching of reading.
