Tips for English Oral Reading Aloud[12] Be fluent and confident.

Even if you dont know how to pronounce the word, just go over it. Dont pause and dont stumble. Speak at your own comfortable pace. If you see any punctuation, then pause accordingly. Commas, full stops: pause. Question marks, exclamation marks: raise tone. Dont be monotonous. Read with the proper enunciations and tone, occasionally raising your volume. Bring some life into the passage youre reading. Make it interactive. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Picture Discussion[12] Look at the picture and answer these questions: 1: What do you think is happening in the picture? What are they doing? 2: What is the setting? Is the weather hot? Is it in a room? Is this taking place at night? 3: Why is this occurring? Why was the photograph take? 4: What is/are the expression on the persons/ peoples face(s)? What are the people in the picture feeling? What are they thinking? 5: How did this happen? How do you know what is happening in this picture? 6: What do you think might happen after that? Next is to form it into proper sentences that make sense. A picture discussion is like telling a story. A very basic guideline is to first; have a point (What is happening); elaborate (Why this is taking place) and; back up with examples (How do you know?). As you go on, you can talk about what they are doing, why they are doing this, what are the feelings of the people in the picture, how do they look etc. Give examples and maybe even speculate on what might happen next. Maybe even go about what you might think is the significance of the picture. Ways to start: This picture depicts a ........scene from.... This picture portrays........ This shows a scene outside/ at......

Use words like these when you are speculating/guessing/making theories: It seems...This suggests that...It could be because...It is probably...Maybe...It suggests that...

Conversation [16] Treat this component like a chat session with a friend. Make it interesting but speak in proper English and sentences. Usually the questions would be about your personal interests or asking you a question that asks if you agree/disagree. Also, the reading passage, picture discussion and conversation topic would have a similar theme so you can use some ideas in the other segments in this section if you can think of any. Always give your personal responses about the topic. When you say a point, always back it up with examples, be it from the news or from your own personal experience. Introduce new ideas into the conversation. If its an agree/disagree question, never go for the absolute I agree/ disagree Try to make it balanced by saying why you agree/disagree to a certain extent. Like talk about agree for 2 points and disagree for 1 point. Dont wait for prompting by the invigilator. Express your ideas and develop them clearly.
