Thank you very much for providing me this opportunity to share some of my experiences with Southwestern.
Spending my college summers with The Southwestern Company from 1995 to 1999 has provided me significant
advantage in my career, and I wanted take a moment to narrate a few of the ways I feel the experience has
benefited me.

Entrepreneurship. Graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in psychology, I started right
out of school working for a small technology company in Seattle. Due to my track record with Southwestern,
including five years entrepreneurial experience and a proven ability to successfully relocate, I was moved within
my first year at the company to open an office in Orange County, California. My success calling on Fortune 500
businesses in the Los Angeles area including Sony Pictures, Mattel, Panasonic, Mitsubishi and MGM was
largely due to skills I built running my own business with Southwestern. Technology businesses operate at a
pace in excess of what most industries experience, very much like selling books. This was a great training
ground for the boot-strap career I was about to begin in technology.

Communication Skills. Today I work as a Regional Sales Manager for a software company in Silicon Valley. I
manage $1.7 million dollars of business on an annual basis with brand name accounts such as Levi Strauss,
Siebel, PeopleSoft, Kaiser Permanente and Lucas Films. During the course of business, I interact with Chief
Officers and department administrators alike. Spending five summers with Southwestern was an opportunity to
build communications skills I could probably not have received elsewhere. Meeting all types of people in their
homes was an amazing opportunity to grow in communication skills. I am sure this experience communicating
would benefit most career paths, but specifically gave me a communications tool-kit I employ daily.

Adventure. While making good money and building life-long friendships, I was able to spend a few months in
New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Boston. What a great way to see the United States. The East Coast
is rich with history. It was great to experience cultural attractions like Plymouth Rock, the Empire State Building,
Times Square, the Lincoln Memorial and the Boston Red Sox.

Network. Working with Southwestern and performing sufficiently to achieve President’s Club provided me the
opportunity of having a Southwestern Vice President Dan Moore write a letter of recommendation for me in my
application to UCLA Anderson business school. I’m pleased to say this letter helped me gain entrance to this
th
prestigious MBA program (currently ranked 11 globally by US News & World Report). The network of
Southwestern peers I’ve developed has provided employment opportunities for myself and others, career
advice and strategy, and a tremendous high-performing peer group I keep in touch with on myriad issues.

Self financing my own education, I assumed a lot of risk heading out for an independent contractor based pay
structure. With anything in business and really in life: the greater the risk, the greater the opportunity for growth.
I would encourage anyone considering spending a summer or more in your work program to embrace the
challenge and the opportunity.
