Dear Husni, Sorry not to get the chance to see you today (I had another busy day today). It was good to bump into you yesterday though. Glad to hear that you are still thinking about your PhD. Theres a lot of potential topics to research! You dont have to do anything to do with radicalism and terrorism though. We would be interested here if you were working on Islamic law, too. All best, Ed

Dear Pak Ed, I'm Husni from Aceh (Ar-Raniry). I'm so glad that I met you yesterday at ANU. I and my group from Indonesia are in Canberra just for three days. Tomorrow morning at 9 am, we will depart to Sidney till Sunday. Because I'm in a group, I just follow the program which has tight schedule. Hopefully we can meet and have a talk again at ANU. I really want to do my PhD in Australia. But I've no any specific research focus yet. Previously, I'm interested in sharia implementation in Aceh which Islamic legal reason in enacting process of qanun sharia as the focus. But I've to change and negotiate the research focus if I want to get scholarship for PhD. I get information that dealing with Islamic studies in Australia, currently main focus of researches are on radicalization and terrorism. So, I've to think the suitable topic for research. Current political constellation in Aceh is very interesting now, especially after Pilkadasung. It just not only about the arising of ex-GAM and ex-combatant being governor and vice governor of Aceh, but also the change of political and social situation in Acehnese society, including in using of language. For instance, many people now call Muzakkir Manaf as "Mualem Muzakkir". Mualim in Arabic means: a teacher or "guru" in Sanskrit. The question is: how is the shifting of the meaning "mualim" occured in Aceh from the sacral meaning for the political purposes? I think we can discuss a lot. Hopefully we can meet and have a talk again.

Sincerely, Husni

Dear Mr. Ed, Thanx a lot for your email. Yeah, I know you've conducted reserach on Aceh. I also attended your presentation tentang "Politik dan Etnisitas di Indonesia" which held by ICAIOS-PPISB Unsyiah in Banda Aceh last month. As you assumed, my research interest is on Sharia law implementation in Aceh, exactly on legal reasons of enacting sharia law within Aceh regional regulation during 2002. I get many insights of Hooker's book, "Indonesian Syariah". For your consideration, I attach my CV and research proposal. I'm applying for ADS scholarship. Best regard, Husni --- On Mon, 8/23/10, Edward Aspinall <edward.aspinall@anu.edu.au> wrote:

Dear Bapak Husni, Professor Virginia Hooker forwarded your email to me. Im the head of the Department of Political a nd Social Change here at the ANU, and I have an interest in research on Aceh. Barry Hooker is now unable to act as supervisor of PhD students, because he has retired. He may be able to join a supervisory panel as an advisor, however, if we can identify a possible alternative supervisor, if that is of interest to you. But first we need to establish exactly what topic youd be interested in working on as a PhD student here at the ANU. Do you have a research proposal or a research topic in mind? I assume it is some aspect of sharia, but what exactly? Are you applying for an AusAID scholarship? Best wishes,

Dear, My name is Husni Mubarrak. Currently, I'm a lecturer of Sharia Faculty at Islamic State University (IAIN) Ar-Raniry in Banda Aceh , Indonesia .

I plan to get PhD degree at ANU. Based on my current research focus, I think Prof. M. B. Hooker is the right person to be my supervisor. I've tried to contact him, but till now I don't get his email yet. Would you like to help me sending his email?

Best regard, Husni
