Dear Distinguished Aggies:

It is with great pleasure that I, on behalf of the Washington, DC Chapter
of the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Alumni
Association, Incorporated, extend our heartfelt congratulation to you at
this 2014 Honoree Gala. We are pleased that you have chosen to join us
to celebrate this momentous occasion.

We are thankful that your accomplishments from past to present have
provided viable opportunities for Aggies of all ages to benefit through
nurturing, social, spiritual and cultural enrichments. Since 1946, we have
seen the DC Chapter grow from a small group of Aggies to the largest and
most vibrant chapter of our beloved alumni association. Our chapter has
been a driving force in moving our association and our alma mater
towards preeminence.

Through the years our honorees and award winners have exemplified the
high standards of moral character and community involvement in
addition to decades of support to our alma mater. We are thankful for
your continued support as we all strive to Achieve Great Goals In Everything
and continue to Produce Renowned Individuals Dedicated to Excellence. We
must admit, that this chapter, our association and our alma mater could
not have achieved these accomplishments without your generosity and
shared sacrifices.

Friends tonight we celebrate; however, we must remain vigilant against
visions of complacency. Our ancestors have made it clear that our trials
and tribulations are the fuel that will propel us to seek nothing less than
success. We shall not allow the whims of partisan politics or vestiges of jim
crow to hold us us back. We, the alumni through our time, talents and
finances will play a key role ensuring the future success of our alma mater
and alumni association.

Again, thank you for your support of the Washington, DC Chapter. We
send you and your families our heartiest congratulations.

With Sincere Gratitude and Aggie Pride,

Aggies, Honorees, Friends, and Guests;

On behalf of the Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to extend greetings,
welcome, and appreciation to each of you on the occasion of our Fourth Annual
Honoree Gala. Thank you for your attendance tonight and support of the
Washington, DC Chapter of the North Carolina A&T State University Alumni
Association, Inc. The Gala is one of many activities sponsored by our chapter
that promotes the "Ole Aggie Spirit" which translates into Aggie Pride! The Gala
provides Aggies of all generations from all over the District of Colombia,
Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) an opportunity to get together and celebrate our
past and present.

The DC chapter has a proud heritage dating back to 1946. The chapter has been
a leader in the National Alumni Association throughout its existence. The
chapter consistently sets the standard for alumni support to our beloved
university. The Alumni House located at 1810 15
th
Street, NW is a continuing
source of pride for our chapter and its members. It should be noted that we are
among a minority of African American organizations and institutions of higher
education who own property in the nations capital. A portion of the Honoree
Galas profits will be used for expenses to maintain the Alumni House.

It is my pleasure to extend congratulatory expressions to our awardees which
include our fourth class of Hall of Fame inductees, two Achievement Awardees,
and three chapter awardees. These awardees exemplify achievement,
commitment, dedication, and Aggie Pride. Their recognition is a testament of
our accomplishments from past to present.

It has been my pleasure to serve as the 2014 Honoree Gala Chairperson. I
appreciate your support and encouragement. The committee has been
unbelievable in their dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm. The committee
members graduation classes range from the 1956s to 2013. The young Aggies
have been incredible and their work speaks volumes about the intergenerational
appeal of our chapter.

Yours in Aggie Pride,

James R. Lanier, Ph.D.
Honoree Gala Chairperson
The Brief History of the Washington, DC Chapter
On or about October 18, 1946 a group of interested alumni assembled at the home of
Earl Payton for the purpose of organizing a local alumni chapter in the Washington,
DC area. The first formal minutes were adopted October 22, 1946. It was decided to
call the chapter "The Dee Cee Aggies". This was later changed to the "A&T Club", and
then to its present name, "The North Carolina A&T State University Alumni
Association, Inc., Washington, DC Chapter."
Upon inception, the alumni group had a strong interest in providing scholarships for
youth in the Washington Metropolitan area. That interest manifested itself into
awarding two scholarships in the early fifties. One of those recipients, Charles D.
Bussey of Cardozo High School graduated from A&T summa cum laude and was the
University's first alumnus to become a General Officer (Brigadier General, May 1, 1982)
in the United States Army.
Since then, supporting DC Chapter's scholarship program has been tantamount
for chapter members. The scholarship program serves as a foundation for the
chapters support and leadership in the National Alumni Giving Program. The
Chapter continues to solicit funds to help local students attend the University;
currently offering annual scholarships to Washington metropolitan area students
attending A&T.
In 1963, incumbent president Issac Woodard appointed a housing committee as
the chapter numbers outgrew the homes of various members. By April 1963, the
committee presented its first housing report which was unanimously accepted,
and efforts were directed toward securing funds for the purchase of an alumni
house. In September 1965, a deed purchased at 1810 15th Street, NW,
Washington, DC belonged to the chapter. A mutual fund was started with
$1,000 to serve as a financial nucleus for our Alumni House.
Fundraising activity exploded within the chapter led by James T. Speight, Jr. along
with Joseph C. McKinney, Mae Belle Holmes, Edward Roper, John Slade and Isaac
Woodard, creating a new financial thrust. It is in that spirit, that the Chapter is
moving to restore the Alumni House.
This Chapter consistently participates in a variety of programs at the community,
regional, and national levels, including feeding the homeless at So Others Might Eat
(S.O.M.E) and Martha's Tables; registering voters for local and national elections, and
working with the Anacostia Watershed Society and DCPS Beautification Day events.
In addition to the chapters long history of community service, the chapter is a
staunch supporter of recruiting highly qualified students to the institution. The DC
Chapter works closely with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions through college
fairs, Aggie Nights and Senior Send Offs events. The chapter also organizes various
inter-alumni networking events and happy hours to support our HBCUs. In 2012, the chapter became a founding member
of the DC Metropolitan HBCU Alliance, modeled after the Atlanta HBCU Alliance.
Our alliances with other HBCU alumni groups allow for the DC chapter to build
strong relationships and continue breathing new life into our community.
Our chapter has a long history and rich legacy of members serving in regional and
national leadership roles. Six members of the chapter have lead the National Alumni
Association: Eugene H. Preston, Jr., Dr. Velma Speight-Buford, John A. Petty, Pamela
L. Johnson, Gerald A. Williams and presently Dr. Claudette Bennett. Today, the
chapter has four members on the National Board of Directors, in addition to
leadership on the Homecoming and Class Reunion committees.
In it with great expectations that we welcome this new class of Honorees.

Kristen Rutledge
Kristen R. Rutledge, is a native Washingtonian and graduate of Howard D. Woodson Senior High
School in the Northeast quadrant of the city. She graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and
Technical State University with a Bachelor of Science in Computer and Information Systems, in
May 1989, and continued her studies in the MBA program at the University of Maryland,
University College.

Kristens involvement in North Carolina A&T Alumni Association began in the mid 1990s, with
the Washington, DC Chapter. During her first chapter meeting, she was inspired and motivated by
all of the community service activities that were being discussed and the members so willing to
volunteer, that she immediately decided to become active in the chapter and from that time to the
present, she has remained a committed member of the Washington, DC Chapter, not only with her
time and talents, but with her financial resources as well. After the untimely death of her daughter,
Kristen established the Daija J. Carter Memorial Scholarship awarded to a female student from the
Washington Metropolitan Area majoring in Early Childhood Education.

Early on, Kristen served as a member of various committees in the chapter (Scholarship,
Nominating, and Annual Giving to name a few), as well as assisted with the regional and national
meetings. By request of then President Gerald Williams, Kristen accepted the appointed position as
Financial Secretary for the Chapter. From that point on she has continued in her upward progress
into other leadership positions within the Chapter. She was the Financial Secretary for four years,
the Vice President for four years, and most recently the President of the Washington, DC Chapter
for two years (2011 2013). Under her leadership the Washington, DC Chapter was awarded the
Large Chapter of the Year from the National Black College Hall of Fame, as well as led all Chapters
in giving, providing over $230,000 to the 2012 Annual Fund of the University.

Professionally, Kristen began her career at the United States Department of Treasury where she was
a summer intern during her breaks from NC A&T. Upon graduation, Kristen was offered a full-
time position as an entry level Computer Systems Analyst, however, discovering early on that she did
not have a passion for programming, but instead number crunching, she requested to shadow a
Senior Budget Analyst in the Budget Division at the Department Treasury, to see if government
budgeting was for her. She was so dedicated and engaged in her new career path, that she received
the Outstanding Service Award during her first year as a budget analyst. Currently, a Senior Budget
Analyst with the Federal Judiciary, Kristen is responsible for Formulating and Executing the budget
for United States Federal Court System (including the Supreme Court of the United States, Court
of International Trade and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit), with a total appropriation
of over $7.3 billion.

A motto Kristen lives by is To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Required and she ensures that
the younger Aggies coming behind her understand that Aggie Pride is more than just a slogan but
a LIFETIME COMMITMENT!

Felicia Brown
Felicia D. Brown graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD in 1985 and
graduated from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NC A&T) with a
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing, in 1989. Later,
she went on to receive her Masters of Arts in Organizational Development in 1993 from Bowie
State University.

Felicias involvement in the North Carolina A&T Alumni Association began in 1990 with the
Washington, DC Alumni Chapter. At that time it was she and very few other recent graduates that
quickly became active in the chapter by participating in community service activities, fundraisers,
student recruitment fairs and chapter socials. Having a deep appreciation for the education received
from A&T she felt it was her duty to quickly get involved in the local activities of the chapter, build
strong long lasting relationships, and promote the university broadly. Heeding the call, in the
1990s, she served as the chairperson for the annual Boat Ride fundraiser, helped to coordinate the
annual chapter summer picnics and actively participated in many community outreach activities.
From this involvement, it was natural for Felicia to navigate to engaging in local leadership
opportunities that would evolve to national leadership for her alumni.

In 2004, Felicia became the first woman to serve as Chair for the chapters Board of Directors a
position typically held by males - where she oversaw the financial and operational matters of the
alumni house. Under her leadership she successfully fundraised to have a portion of the house
renovated so alumni and friends could continue to utilize the home for alumni meetings and
spirited festivities. From there, she went on to serve as the First Vice President for two years
(2007-2009). While serving in her elected role, she volunteered to serve in a dual role as the
chapters Recording Secretary. Two years later (2010-2011), Felicia was elected Second Vice
President, while also serving as the Recording Secretary for the North Carolina A&T National
Alumni Association for two consecutive terms (2009 2012).

Community Service has always been a passion for Felicia. Not only has she worked diligently with
her alumni she has been an active servant in other organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc. - Rho Mu Omega Chapter, Pearls III foundation, Project 2000 and the Washington
Area Womens Foundation. Currently, Felicia serves on the Domestic Missions Ministry for the
First Baptist Church of Glenarden where she volunteers with local projects and serves as the team
lead for Holy People for Christ Youth Community Project.

Professionally, Felicia has always held positions that allowed her to express her love for giving back.
Shortly after graduate school she managed a mentor program for abused and neglected youth,
where she grew program participation to over 100%; she served as the Director for Community
Initiatives at the Points of Light Foundation and the Village at Rockville she served as the Director
of Community Outreach. In her current role at AARP, she develops and implements scalable
programs as well as tools and resources that add value to members and prospective members,
particularly for minority communities.

Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) with a Bachelor of Science in
Computer Science, in May 2004.

local Washington DC chapter. In 2011 Darryl was initiated into the Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity Inc. Omicron Zeta Sigma Chapter. Currently Darryl is serving as Financial
Secretary. Also, Darryl is very involved with the Shiloh Baptist Church, his young adult
ministry, the missions ministry, and the young adult choir. In his personal time he plays
baritone saxophone with the Main Street Community Band.

Darryl is very committed to supporting the university. He has donated to the Annual Fund
every year since he earned his degree in 2004. Darryl often travels to games to support
A&T Athletics and participates on the Computer Science Alumni Advisory Board to keep
abreast of what is going on with the department and offer advisement in relation to
professional experience. Darryl truly loves A&T and continues to live out AGGIE PRIDE
wherever he goes.

Oliver Farrand Wallace, P.E., known fondly as Ollie to family and friends, was
born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was the son of General Roche and Arlene
Wallace. He graduated from Bethlehem High School and briefly served in the
US Navy. While in high school, Oliver starred on the boxing and track teams, all
while excelling in mathematics and the sciences.

While attending Pennsylvania State University, Oliver was influenced by a
hometown friend Art Statum to transfer from Penn State to North Carolina
A&T. As a result of his friends persuasions, Oliver transferred and went on to
spend four very successful years in the school of engineering. Oliver graduated
with high honors with the class of 1953.

During Olivers senior year he met a freshman majorette and Home Economics
major Ruth Carter. Ruth and Oliver quickly became close friends and was a
strong influence behind his transition from the sport of boxing.

Upon graduating from A&T, Oliver was employed with the Veterans Administration in Philadelphia. He returned
often to A&T while working for the VA and ultimately proposed to Ruth during her sophomore year and married
upon her graduation from A&T in 1956.

Olivers career with the Veterans Administration flourished leading him to the Washington,DC area. His work had
him leading teams nationwide during the major expansion of the VA Medical Centers. While working for the VA,
Oliver became active in the National Society of Black Engineers in the DC area working to establish scholarship
funding for future engineers. He viewed recruiting young black engineers as one of his strongest passions.

After leaving the Veterans Administration, Oliver was employed by Corps of Engineers based out of Ankara, Turkey.
During his career with the Corps of Engineers and other nations he demonstrated superior engineering and project
management skills leading Corps projects in Turkey, Japan, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. Olivers fifteen-year tenure in
Saudi Arabia included the design and engineering of air conditioning equipment for facilities including the Hajj
Terminal in Jiddah, the Holy Kabba in Mecca, two international airports including the King Abdul Aziz airport in
Riyadh.

Oliver was a fearless trailblazer who lead his young family throughout the world during a time when overseas travel was
not popular with his peers. He always challenged his daughters Quay Ellen and Ressie Recelle on their travels to take
pictures, keep journals and always take something for show and tell back to their classes.

Oliver and his family returned to the state upon retirement. Shortly after returning, Oliver and Samuel Legette, Sr..
opened a small engineering firm to keep busy in their semi-retirement. An engineer through and through, he was
constantly called on to solve issues even at the DC Jail.

In 2009, Colonel David McElveen, a classmate from the class of 1953 spoke at Olivers homegoing service on March 6,
2009 highlighting his ability to move in uncharted waters during his lifetime, spreading his gifts and letting his light
shine through seeds planted while matriculating at A&T. His granddaughter Olivia Watkins tribute to her grandfather
was the singing of the song This Little Light of Mine while her brother Frank Watkins, Jr. spoke of their awesome
times with his grandfather, always pressing him to be #1.

Verse I
Dear A&T, Dear A&T, a monument
indeed, Around thy base with
grateful hearts behold thy students
kneel. We bless the power that
gave thee birth to help us in our
need, We'll ever strive while here on
earth all loyalty to yield.
Refrain
With joy, with joy, dear A&T, thy
students turn from thee To spread
thy trophies year by year from Dare to
Cherokee.
