Passion Statement
Successful project execution for automation systems is extremely difficult but can be achieved.

Challenging traditional practices and technologies and reinventing the execution has proven to be a powerful combination.
Partnering with key Suppliers, like Rockwell Automation, is essential to efficiently implementing sustainable change.

Call to Action
Continuing to execute a high level of project activity
Stewarding the execution of numerous projects simultaneously Project activities around the globe Driven to shorter project cycle times and lower capital investments; must be Capital Efficient

Must work more efficiently and smarter to support the level of project activity. Must challenge traditional practices and technologies.

Automation Execution Model

Identify all I&C activities early and develop a plan for flawless execution. Contract the very best resources and assign each activity to the resource best able to execute; must work productively as a Single Team. Select the very best, proven technologies. Utilize a comprehensive set of global practices that are continuously improved to reflect lessons learned.

Automation Execution Model (cont.)

Utilize an I&C Toolkit that includes go-bys, guides and tools. Identify all dependencies and manage those dependencies.

Identify all interfaces and manage those interfaces.

Encourage and expect innovation, cost reduction and continuous improvements in execution. Finally, remove unnecessary barriers and let the right resources do what they do best.

Common Experiences
Experienced significant I/O increases throughout the project lifecycle; forced reiterative work. Changes occurred throughout project execution causing delays in the release of construction drawings and delivery of automation systems; construction and commissioning activities delayed; startup dates jeopardized. Post-FAT changes forced expensive field modifications

Challenge to Our Key Suppliers

The purpose of this initiative or challenge is to pursue and implement tools, processes and technologies to achieve one or more of the following:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Eliminate and/or automate steps in the overall execution of automation; Simplify and/or streamline necessary manual steps or processes; Prevent recycle; Eliminate components not necessary in the architecture of the automation systems; Eliminate or minimize dependencies upon other disciplines; Simplify configuration of interfaces with third-party packages; More easily accommodate change including late changes; Simplify the generation or maintenance of required documentation; Challenge traditional approaches.

Barriers
Conventional thought to project success has been to focus on perfecting and supplementing the way projects have always been executed. This has burdened and impeded the identification and implementation of change. Challenging traditional and proven practices is difficult. Accepting and implementing change is difficult.

However, doing what has always been done can only result in incremental improvements at best. We have got to redefine how we execute automation projects.

To Field Devices

Standard factory JBs with easily configurable IO ordered with part number; no hardware FAT System design contained within the software which is validated virtually and separate from the hardware 60-70% reduction in field terminations Early ordering of standard factory JBs to support construction with just an approximate I/O count Easier addition of additional smart JBs for added I/O Almost installation-proof Streamlined commissioning Simplified documentation

Fewer custom controller cabinets without I/O and field power supplies
Reduced LER heat load, space and weight

No marshaling cabinets!

Current List of Automation Pursuits

The following is the current list of Automation technologies that are being pursued:
Smart I/O

Virtualization of Hardware and Virtualization used for Engineering / Testing

Auto-Detect / Auto-Interrogate / Auto-Configure / Auto-Enable / Auto-Document I/O Third-Party Interface Solution using Ethernet IP

IEC 61850 Standard Communication Networks and Systems in Substations

Wireless Multivariable Transmitters

It is the packaging of the above technologies that will achieve the necessary result.

Summary
Perfecting what we have always done can only result in incremental improvements. We have to challenge traditional practices and technologies and look for opportunities to make leaps in improvements. Partnering with key Suppliers, like Rockwell Automation, is essential to efficiently implementing sustainable change.

Change will not come easy but buy-in is necessary from all those involved.
By successfully implementing the identified technologies, automation execution is redefined and will remain off a projects critical path.

Final Remarks
People say you have to have a lot of passion for what youre doing and its totally true and the reason is because its so hard that if you dont, any rational person would give up.
