This will be a review lesson where they can connect what they know to words from the book they are reading, "By the Great Horn Spoon". Learning Outcome(s) The learner will review synonyms and antonyms. The learner will use the text to find words and their synonyms and antonyms. Summary In this activity, students will first review what a synonym and antonym. Then, students will play a matching game where they will get a word card and find another student in the class that has a synonym and an antonym to your word. Lastly, students will look at words from "By the Great Horn Spoon" and find antonyms to these words in their Activity Packet. The teacher will show students a poster that will review what synonyms and antonyms are. 2. After reviewing what these mean, the class will brainstorm a few synonmyms and antonyms on the poster as a whole class. 3. After this, the teacher will explain to students that they will be playing a matching game to try and find synonyms and antonyms. In the first round, students will each get a card with a word that will later be paired with a synonym of that word. Their task is to find another student in the class who has this synonym. The next round will continue the same way, but with antonyms. 4. after the completion of the game, students will open their "Gold Rush Activity Packet" to the chapter 13/14 activity. 5. The teacher will read the directions and lead the students through the first problem. 6. Students will complete this page independently at their seats. 7. To close, students will share some of their answers. Grouping Strategies Students will be whole group during the beginning of the activity. Then students will be in partners to pair their synonyms and antonyms together. Lastly, students will work independently on their packets.
